Spanking teaches children that it's OK to use physical abusive force to get others to do what you want, especially if they are smaller and weaker than you are. Most recover pretty much and don't do it to others themselves, but some go on to use the tactic on others as adults.

I would think it would be far better to use other ways to teach self-discipline than to show a lack of it yourself by hurting children to get your way.

It takes a certain mindset to think corporal punishment is good for children but not adults. My daughter is a special ed teacher and her first job was in a school for special ed only. She was told to always wear slacks, and be prepared to take a child down. She did once go to the aid of another teacher, but her classroom never required it. Children adapt to rules that set limits, and the response of other children. When the rules are set first--not in response to an incident--the rules become a comfort zone. After more than 20 years, with at least 1/4 of her children fitting the category, she has received many thanks from children and parents alike. Last week while adapting to the bad news on baby James, she received a letter from a 4th grader--now a college graduate--who hopes to be as great a teacher as "Mrs. Fielding."

An oversimplification as far as the general intellectual level of the parents, but not of their rationality in dealing with a difficult situation. I have resorted to spanking on occasion, but it was out of frustration rather than a well thought-out attempt at effective discipline. I don't think any good ever came out of it.

I think one point that has been left out here is the manner in which corporal punishment in used. If such punishment is given out arbitrarily or in a fit of anger then obviously it can be harmful to the child and likely counterproductive. However if it is given out in a conscientious and even handed way, I think it can teach a valuable lesson.

I received my fair share of spankings as a kid, but my parents were very careful to never do it in anger, and only after several warnings. "If you don't stop BLANK then you are going to get a spanking." Kids live in a world where often times they don't see the negative results of their behavior. And logic does not work on your average rebellious 8 year old boy. Sometimes the only way to get that message through is with a solid whack on the rear. I do not resent my parents one bit for those spankings, in fact I'm glad they did it.

Again though, I think the real key here is the manner in which corporal punishment is employed. I have no doubt that there are LOTS of parents out there that use corporal punishment excessively or inappropriately. But I don't think you can take it off the board completely.

The only message delivered with each whack is that the ability to use violence and inflict pain demonstrates one's power. That trains people to use violence to resolve disputes and as evidence of their imagined superiority.
This goes a long way to explain the mindset of the Akins of this world and Arkansas' three stooges.

Since the majority of the disciplinary problems of children at school are a result of their home life, are you suggesting we use corporal punishment on the parents; and if so, do we spank the offending custodial parent when the non-custodial parent is the problem? Should the violence & threats of violence by the school’s adults be punished? Should we start with the school board? At what point do we stop censuring the violence of individuals & began rewarding the violence of the group?
Brain wiring, people....it's bad brain wiring that makes people vote for Republicans.

Full disclosure....I was one of those little boys that Ritalin was invented for, but sadly it came along after my time. Instead I got many doses of severe butt pain administered by an adult I was or wasn't related to. Most I deserved, a few I didn't and those I can well remember 50 years after the paddling.

I raised 2 fabulous girls and spanked them each exactly once when they were between 2 & 3 and decided smacking their mother was a great idea. Since then I've never had an occasion to even think of striking them. And those 2 times I had to go immediately to bed, spanking them made me as sick as if I had eaten rat poison....I could still cry about it if I thought long enough about those 2 terrible days of my life.

Don't know about raising boys, never had one. Don't know about being a girl, I've never been one. But I have to guess that raising girls without a spanking is far more likely than raising untouched boys. mag still offers to whip me now and then....and of course I deserve it at times.

Spanking/paddling may be beneficial to maybe .1 of 1% of students, but there are better and more lasting ways to correct behavior. Many kids who get disciplined this way have it much worse at home, so a paddling is nothing to them.

Durango, I've got to side with Verla here. My parents also used the "rod" and all it did was enrage me, whether I was the object or one of my siblings. They were of a different, less enlightened time and I don't hold it against them.

I almost never struck my children---just a few times I administered a swat to their rears. And EVERY time I did it, it was a failure in parenting on my part.

You turned out okay and so did I. My children are a lot better human beings than I am, though. Unlike my brothers and most men of their generation, my son has never been in a fist fight or struck another child in anger. I think that is because he was raised in an environment (for almost the whole part) where violence was not considered okay. My sister's son was raised the same way, and he never got into fights either. My sister taught for 40 years and she never resorted to corporal punishment in the class room.

And as far as demanding respect, it needs to be earned. It's hard to respect someone two or three times your size while they are whaling away on your behind.
Verla, I agree that corporal punishment as you described it is excessive and counterproductive. But an immediate application of a relatively mild form of it can turn the tide in school.

It certainly worked for me. Mrs. Turner decorated my butt with three pops in 3rd grade for disrupting her class; Ditto Mrs. Benson when I was a smart-ass and sassed her in the 5th. I’ll not go into what happened at home later.

Thanks to teachers AND parents who demanded respect and didn’t mind applying a bit of “corporal” punishment to achieve it, I seem to have turned out OK.

Durango & Full Throttle--corporal punishment by school officials is not the answer. A quick swat on the bottom, immediately after an incident will work for mothers, but a programmed number of splats with a paddle--often delayed by hours or days--is cruel and unusual punishment and teaches not respect, but a desire to get even. Think on it.

Children need discipline. A well disciplined child has a good chance to become a disciplined adult. Some children have a well developed sense of right and wrong and accept and understand proper discipline as earned and deserved. Some children will require some use of corporal punishment at some time in their lives.

Children need unconditional love. Unconditional love provides a good opportunity for healthy self esteem.

The absense of discipline is harming schools and children. Discussing these issues in a vacuum in connection with our schools is little more than jibberish. We have done little to nothing for the children who need it and the ones who don't are seldom the problem.

This is simply the wrong issue.
