I like the "Food Fight" concept, but I also agree with a commentor on the other thread who suggested that both points of view share the same blog post, so all comments would end up on the same thread.

I used to say that Vino's was my favorite pizza in Little Rock. I especially like the Vino's Special (by the slice!), but I want jalapeno instead of bell pepper. There's something about the delicious crispiness that comes from that second trip through the oven that makes it wonderful and distinctive. When we lived downtown, I would hit Vino's more often than I do now, but I still love it. It helps that their beer is good, too.

Now we live nearer to Damgoode, and I have to say that I love their pizza. Handtossed is the only way I've ever ordered there, and my personal favorite sauce is the spicy white, but if more delicate palettes are dining with me and we share a pizza, I'm happy to step it down to the pink or even the standard red. I pick whatever toppings suit my fancy of the day, but of their specialty pizzas I really like the Greek. The Hog--plus jalapenos--is kind of good, but any more than one slice is overkill for my belly. Nitrates or nitrites or something in that much pork. Ugh. Good thing they have cheap PBR for washing down.

It seemed to me that Daniel's criticism was mostly aimed at the Stuffy Underdog...just one thing on the Damgoode menu. I'd never even order anything like that, so I'll have to take his word for it. I still think Damgoode is more good than not. Oh...except for their inconsistent service. Sometimes it's good; other times not so much.

I remember when Shakey's was just about the only place to get pizza in Little Rock, and I remember loving it. Luigi's used to make wonderful pizza, too, but I haven't been there in years. When I lived in Fayetteville, King Pizza was king; the only thing better around there was a place on Dickson called Fonzerelli's. It was a "by the slice" place run by one guy. It may have lasted a year, but there was nothing like it.

I do love Iriana's and am reminded that I should probably go there again soon. When the Pizza Cafe came onto the scene I worked just down the street, so I went there regularly after my shifts. Everyone raved about their pizza, but I thought it was just so-so. (Cold-ass beer, though.)

I have only ever had ZaZa's take out, and I was under-impressed. I make a fairly good pizza out of my standard home-made bread dough, so staying at home is good pizza option for us, too.

Iriana's and Damgoode are the best in L.R. to me. I tend to lean towards whichever one I ate at last as to whether one is better than the other. Iriana's is great for people watching for sure.

Damgoode has some unique options and combinations that a lot of local places don't offer but I tend to get crust that's undercooked and I seemed to always forget to ask them to cook the pie well done. My vote for best pizza is ZaZa, no one in this area makes a true Italian pie like they do. I like Iriana's but hate there location since it's a real nightmare trying to get close parking. I tend to hit NYPD in West LR since it's closer to my home and they make some good NY style pizza there.

@EY - You've hit the nail on the head. Service kills 'em, and that's one reason I don't eat there very often. ZaZa's service is hit or miss (more hit than miss). Haven't tried NYPD yet, and I think about it every time I'm out that way.

@Max - Irianna's is on my list for sure.

@Dan - Squid is one of those foods I kind of hate, so I'm wondering how that jerky's gonna be. Other than the occasional fried calamari, I despise the stuff.

I like their combinations, their funny menu and for the most part their pizza. One HUGE downside, however is that service. The former Mr. EY mentioned to a waitress once that it was nice to "finally see her" once she stopped to get our drink order (after a LENGTHY wait). Her reply was "don't come in when we're busy". Maybe....MAYBE 1/3 of the tables were occupied. She had gone by us SEVERAL times on her way to other tables and ignored us each time. It's not that she didn't stop, it's that she didn't acknowledge us at all. That kind of thing is really hard to pay good money for, no matter what the pizza tastes like. I like the pizza, if that's all I'm judging.

Do I still eat there occasionally? If I'm nearby, I have plenty of time, I'm not super-hungry and someone else wants to go. Or if someone wants it delivered. On my own? Zaza's, US Pizza or NYPD Pizza (yes, it's a chain, but it delivers in my area).
