No Kurt, the $6 for $1 is the number of times a dollar changes hands. You pay a vendior, they pay the wholesaler , who pays a salesperson, who buys groceries, who pay their clerk who has the money to go to Target to buy a gift for Christmas for their wife. That's the dollar turnover scenario that the Chamber uses and this is totally independent from the federal dollars but remember, they also turnover. Small towns with hospitals that get Medicaid have people who work at them and who live in the area, buy in the area, etc. That's the dollar turnover. If you get 6 times more money from the feds, then there is 6X more money to turnover.

Smart people know this-the AR Republican toe-draggers, not so much since they don't teach intelligent reasoning in the home school program. That would make people actually question what they read and that doesn't fit into their world.

Finally I have found something Eureka says that I agree with. He is right on health care and single payer. Why should we have to pay more for doctors, pharmaceuticals, and hospitals than Europe does? Why, because of the health care lobby? Everyone should be covered and not billed by Blue Cross Blue Shield or anyone else. Americans deserve health care. Here is our chance.

CBB, I think the $6 for each $1 refers to the additional amount we would actually get in Medicaid benefits for each tax dollar we spend, and not the potential economic benefit. The potential economic benefit would be much greater, if those figures are actual spending figures.

BTW, Alabame turned down the Medicaid expansion and the healthcare exchanges today. The impact on their people is about 10% of the population of Arkansas while they let Washington control who offers health insurance in their state. Don't like federal control but decide to let the feds control. Brightness is their long suit!

We may have found Sarah Palin's Death Panels and it is the Arkansas Republican Party.

The Chamber of Commerce, those lyng friends of the GOTP faction, used that argument that a dollar spent on road construction turns over 6 times in the community, creating more jobs and helping the overall economy. The same applies to dollars spent on hospitals and doctors and drugs. And in the latter case. not helping cut down on the losses at the smaller hospitals from uninsured care might just be the thing that causes the hospitals to go under. You lose a hospital, you also lose the doctors in the community since they have no place to send patients. For all of those rural GOTP members, that is where you live and some people will die as they are too far from the major population centers with their hospitals that are also losing money. Yes, vote against Medicaid expansion because we are "christians" and we hate women and the poor and those of non-white color and even those who elected us because we are dumb asses!

Of course ES is ultimately correct. What we have done with Health Care and Education are unsustainable. Raising the costs on fewer and fewer people has been a short term gain but now we are trapped. We have created a Health Care bubble and an Education bubble where cost exceeds real value on two items we must have to compete. These are the drivers of the Federal debt problem. The reform of Medicare, Medicaid, will only make the problem worse. The reform must come in Healthcare and Education or the bubble only gets bigger and pop.

Establish health care as a human right, right now today. Do it with an expansion of tri-care (V.A. style) or single payer (Medicare) for all.

It's that simple, that humane, that healthy and that much more affordable. And it will be damn good for all other productive business.

The savings from doing this should cut the overall GDP of US Health costs in at least half, ultimately more than half... while every human being walks into a medical facility in need of attention receives not one billing form or question, because no billing office, or insurance agent exists. England (for one of many examples) does this for under 3k per person per year. this rate paid on a progressive scale would be huge for the 99 percent.

As long as neoliberal government funds/subsidizes the beasts (insurance and drug dealers) while covering only the most expensive segments of society (low income, disabled, elderly) costs will remain far above the rest of the world while health stats remain at or below third world lines.

We are the only developed country who allows both controlling parties to deny us basic 20th century decency.

Boy, I'm really starting to feel for the repubs. There is room on their side of some of these arguments that moderates and independents would support. But, they are so far into the renut delusion they are determined to go off the cliff and take everyone with them. Any fool knows that Arkansas is a net gain state on the federal tit. It is not just poor folk who benefit from all those extra dollars. If reform is needed it has to take place at the federal level. Arkansas is too poor to be the solution for the federal debt crisis. They need to announce TODAY that they are falling in line behind the Beebe plan. Truth be told, they should be the first ones looking for more revenue to fill the shortfall. Their people will feel the pinch right along with everyone else.
