Vanessa, Verla....There's still Beisbol on the radio in major markets, athough its not an easy task to hear Cardinal games on the radio during the day (since no longer have cable and wanted to keep up during the recent early playoffs). That said, am old enough to remember Frank Fallon do PBP for Southwest Conference (men's) basketball game of the week on an outfit called TVS, and that was a year or two before the arrival of Eddie Sutton---that was my first exposure to Razorback BB on TV.

jabberwocky- i think you will find those calls are from something called the AR state police association. It is my understanding they are not really government affiliated at all, just out begging for money. There is another that tries to put game warden fear in you before begging, probably many others I've never heard from.

As I recall it is legal for them to use somewhere north of 90percent of the take for "overhead"

I just got an extortion call ... from the State Police. There needs to be some kind of prohibition for using "AR STATE POLICE" caller ID for fund-raising activities. Of course you're going to pick up the phone when the caller ID says AR State Police. Who knows what's happening - a friend/relative has been killed, you're a suspect in a crime, whatever...?

Then after all of the worst scenarios pass through your mind, they ask for money. Built-in incentive to do something to keep them from being pissed with you. It's outright extortion, no matter what supposedly charitable reason the fund-raising is for. If a cop in uniform walks up to you in a store you own and asks for a donation, you'd likely assume it's for "protection" and donate "just in case."

It's damned extortion and should be illegal. As well as those State Police and FOP supporter bumper decals.

Listening to Cardinal games on the radio brought together all kinds of folks. Tim McCarver and Mike Shannon just aren't the same as Jack Buck whether he was partnering with Joe Garagiola or Harry Carey, but there's still something to be said for a baseball game on the radio.

If the AF would eliminate a few Generals they could fund the fighter squadron in Ft Baptist. The current ratio now is 1 per 1400 enlisted military wide with the AF being the most top heavy. In WWII it was 1 - 6000. Speaking of Generals there are 5 now under investigation for girls, taxpayer money, unethical behavior, etc.

Republicans blew it. Back in 1989 when the Heritage Foundation (yes, that bunch of right-wing ideologues) proposed the outline for what was to become "Obamacare," Republicans could have gone a long way to replace their image of being a mean-spirited money-grubbing party with one of having some (albeit limited) degree of compassion.

Of course, the Heritage Foundation proposal was somewhat defensive. It knew that national health coverage was coming in some form or another, but they wanted to intervene with a system that protected the profits of their benefactors.

Instead, Barack Obama adopted the proposal, with only minor changes. Rather than health reform being a Republican victory, it became the crown jewel and albatross of the Obama administration.

A truncated history of the law:
Detailed history from late 1800's - 1965. Names the heroes (Roosevelt [both], Truman, Johnson, Nixon) and the enemies (AMA, AFL)
A simpler, sanitized version of the history of health care reform:

I've presented all of this so that the next time someone throws the "Socialism" charge, you can remind them that Obamacare originated in the fetid minds of Republicans.

Update on Baby James. He's been given a new nickname at Cincinnati Childrens: Goober. His sister Caroline was not a match, but there are matches in the bone marrow registry and phone calls to those volunteers have begun. Meanwhile pig lines for tranfusions and antibiotics are improving his condition, which is necessary before b/m can be given. Once he is stabalized he can return to Ark-Childrens. Meanwhile his parents, sister and m. grandparents are settling in. Thanks for caring.
