Slinger and rc, there are some facts missing from the story about the closing of Hostess Brands. Yes, the strike by the bakers' union was the last straw, but the company had been destined to fail long before.

Venture capitalists waded in, but they loaded the company with so much debt that it couldn't upgrade equipment. Hostess got too big and failed, purchasing other snack food companies just before the healthy food wave reduced demand for their products.

Workers made drastic concessions over the past ten years, losing as much as 50% of their salaries, benefits, and higher insurance costs, to help the company keep going. Part of the concessions they faced in this round was loss of their pensions.

Meanwhile, the top ten executives of the company were rewarding themselves with lavish compensation increases, with the then CEO receiving a 300 percent increase. If the company survived, vulture capitalists stood to reap huge returns, selling off pieces, none of which would have prevented eventual bankruptcy.

As usual, the story is more complex than simply blaming unions.

NYTimes comment on the Petraeus hoopla:
"But the Petraeus scandal could well end up teaching some very different lessons. If the most admired military man in a generation can have his e-mail hacked by F.B.I. agents, then none of us are safe from the post-9/11 surveillance machine. And if an affair is all it takes to force such a man from office, then we truly have lost all sense of proportion." ...
... "In the weeks to come, a lot more people are going to come to the same conclusion — and are going to ask the same questions about the ease with which the government can look at our e-mails and peep into our bedrooms. Such a rethinking is long overdue."
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/17/opinion/…
----
When Repugs rant about "big gummint," seldom do they concern themselves about how much power they have given to the government to curtail our freedoms. On the contrary, they fan terrorism fears to drive voters into their arms, claiming that any freedom the party can sacrifice to fight them connivin' terrorists makes voters safer. Now, which is the "big government" party?

      "GLOBAL WARMING: AN ASTONISHING FACTOID”

To bring this home, the temp dropped to 32 in LR Tuesday for the first time since February 20. This made for a 267-day “growing season,” the 10th longest in history. The record is 281 days in 1905.

Talk about weird: Inexplicable thoughts of the stunning John Markle murder-suicide came to mind in the deer woods late last night. Can’t imagine why: Hadn’t thought about it in years. Fired up the computer after getting home this morn. Lo and behold, Arkansas Bidness had noted that today marks the 25th anniversary of that terrible incident.

Background: In the wee hours of Nov. 16, 1987, Markle shot his wife and two young daughters to death as they slept in their home in Little Rock's historic Quapaw Quarter. Then, Markle stuck two pistols to his head and fired into both temples simultaneously.

A few days earlier, Markle had been fired from his job as a futures trader at Stephens “for a sophisticated embezzlement scheme that benefitted Markle's mother, Academy Award-winning actress Mercedes McCambridge.” Hard to believe that was 25 years ago.

Speaking of Stephens and newspapers, went to an estate sale today. Almost bought a March 11, 1918 Arkansas Gazette and a July 28, 1935 Pine Bluff Daily Graphic. Prices a bit high, I thought. Who knew there’d ever been a PBDG? Now thinking this may be the only copy in existence. May go back tomorrow.

NVR, eLwood (and others who enjoy good pitcher shows): Saw “Lincoln” this afternoon. In a word: Splendid. Don’t miss it. Tremendous history lesson, beautifully written, perfectly acted. Incredibly impressed with Daniel Day-Lewis’ performance as Lincoln. Great performances, too, by Sally Field, Tommy Lee Jones, Hal Holbrook, and others.

This flick very much heightens the desire to visit the Lincoln Presidential Library at Springfield, Ill. Which neighbors say is the best they’ve ever toured.
plainjim - Thanks for your reply, I'm always interested to read your well-informed opinions, since you were actually in the biz. But I'm sticking by my prediction for a few reasons:

1) Witt Stephens tried a takeover of the Gazette once, and failed, but the Stephens family has the patience to wait it out.

2) They want a statewide platform to express their opinions.

3) They have the money to do it.

4) Warren Buffet is shutting down some of his underperforming newspapers.

5) Warren Stephens told Forbes he is still interested in acquisitions.

I agree with you Rad, that Stephens will be shutting down some newspapers, or selling them off to suckers, but I would bet you good money that they will never acquire the Demo-Gaz, or DoG, as I call it. I think there is a long way to go , though. I have suspected for some time that Stephens will discontinue the zoned editions that it was been printing in NW Arkansas, and go to one regional newspaper published in Springdale. They could save a good deal of money by eliminating the Rogers, Bentonville and Fayetteville editions. (Of course, the Bentonville and Fayetteville editions are the DoG's part of the joint venture that has been operating in Northwest Arkansas for some time, and not Stephens' properties. What is interesting is how long the joint venture in Northwest Arkansas can last, given the fact that the two chains are competitors.

Today at my PCP office while getting an annual physical I am presented with a notice that my AR BCBS Health Advantage insurance plans no longer pays for a number of tests previously paid for during a wellness exam. The notice said "According to Blue Cross, this is a result of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA)"

This is such BS such that it gives the BS in BCBS a whole new meaning. The ACA law does not dictate what care is afforded to patients. The insurance company does that as it always has. If anything ACA assures care. What likely has happened is AR BCBS being limited as to its profit in accordance to ACA such that BCBS reduced services so as to keep more of the premiums for their profit. Dirty rotten Scoundrels!

It was just 2 years ago, the year before the ACA 20% profit cap came into play, that the AR BCBS profit was at 35%. I remember it because that same year, CA BCBS profit was 21% and they reduced premium costs the next year for policy holders keeping 12% of the profit for themselves. That's fair.

Talk about some bureaucracy getting in the way of health care decisions between doctors and patients. This stinks of an insurance company doing just that.
