Approximately 1.6 million people live in the Gaza Strip, an area of 141 sq miles (LR's area is 116.8 sq miles). While the majority were born in the Gaza Strip, a large percentage identify as Palestinian refugees, fleeing to Gaza as part of the 1948 Palestinian exodus following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. The unemployment rate hovers around 40% and the health status of the Gaza Strip is abysmal. It is essentially treated like a prison camp.

Israel controls air, land, and sea access - blockading even humanitarian shipments. The blockade has been relaxed periodically - for example, "In June 2009, the blockade was eased to allow processed hummus, but not hummus with extras such as pine nuts or mushrooms."

"In February 2009, Senator John Kerry visited Gaza and expressed his "astonishment" at the ban of items. Importation of pasta was allowed after that."

Egypt operates one crossing area, but due to pressure from the U.S. and Israel, but even there the supplies are extremely limited.

To read more about the blockade of Gaza:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blockade_of_t…

Since news about the Gaza conflict is filtered by political interests, it is nearly impossible to find unbiased accounts. Neither the Rs nor the Ds want to risk losing an influential election demographic, afraid that less-than-enthusiastic support for Israel's actions could be misrepresented by the other party as anti-semitic.

Arkansas will regret this merger. We will lose much more than what we have been promised to gain.

Once the merger between UAMS and St. Vincent's is irrevocably underway, the doctrinal proscriptions will be imposed, by hook or crook, probably with the assistance of the shiite Repugs in the legislature. It will affect not just women's health, but also end-of-life decisions, in vitro fertilization, sterilization choices, contraception, conducting research in sensitive areas, psychiatric and counseling services, and other personal choices. Options will be curtailed at UAMS and its branches, including training in the schools of medicine, nursing and pharmacology.

Perhaps UAMS may need - for example, more training sites for doctors and nurses. But that could be done with specific limited contractual agreements, without throwing away the entire institution.

However, a merger with St. Vincent's is a devil's bargain.

I can see how a public teaching hospital can take over a private Catholic hospital, but I can't see how they can merge. This merger would leave central Arkansas women with zero options for safe termination of risky pregnancies, since none of the Baptist-affiliated Ob/Gyns will terminate a pregnancy. I even had a friend who was forced to miscarry in the labor ward at Baptist with women happily giving birth. Cruel.

It is BEYOND clear that the Catholic Church values its religious dogma over human life. It's been repeatedly demonstrated in similar situations in Catholic-run hospitals wherever they operate.

Its supposedly "pro-life" stance behind "religious freedom" is no more nor less than a smokescreen for anti-women-, anti-sex-, anti-reproductive-science and health care.

The church will obfuscate and lie to hide these ugly facts.

Cardinal Trujillo, deceased, is a hideous case in point: supporting the Catholic Church's anti-condom-distribution policy in Africa and falsely claiming that latex condoms are permeable to the HIV virus (they are not).

Result? The former President of the Royal Society of Britain (oldest continuing scientific body on earth) stated that this Catholic anti-condom-distribution policy resulted in between 20-60 million deaths in Africa from AIDS.

Due to unethical and unscientific Catholic religious dogma.

These policies, as Outlier noted, have nothing whatever to do with ethics, science or medical care. They are religious dogma, pure and simple.

They must be shunned completely by any ethical health treatment facility.

Management solutions, if needed, must be sought elsewhere. Because, again repeatedly, the Catholic church has demonstrated time and again that it will LIE to preserve its dogma.

Yes, it's that clear and simple.

And ugly.

This is another one of those cases where someone has decided private industry can run something better than the government. Like the Post Office. Or the bus company. Or waste collection. Or the British railroads. Or . . . well, anyway.

So let's say that is so. Then the state will not need all those UAMS employees, right? A lot will be laid off, right? The state payroll will go way down, right? Let's see some figures.

It's real noble of Dr. Rahm and all of them to tacitly admit someone else is needed to do the job. Perhaps there was a day when executives who felt that way would just resign. But now they'll probably stay in place and simply add several more layers of management.

Good thinking, right?

Here's the discussion/conclusion of a study addressing treatment for miscarriage in Catholic Hospitals. A young woman died of septicemia in Ireland a week or so ago, because the hospital refused to do a D&C because there was still a fetal heartbeat.

"Physicians working in Catholic-owned hospitals in all 4 US regions of our study disclosed experiences of being barred from completing emergency uterine evacuation while fetal heart tones were present, even when medically indicated. As a result, they had to delay care or transfer patients to non–Catholic-owned facilities. Some physicians violated the authority and protocol of the ethics committee to deliver what they considered safe medical care that reflected the standard of care learned in residency. The extent to which this might occur needs to be researched further but may be difficult to assess, because most physicians are not likely to discuss such behavior even in a confidential interview.

"Contradictory interpretations of Directive 47 in the Catholic health literature and in practice indicate that ethics committees are either uncertain or in disagreement about how to manage miscarriage when fetal heart tones are present and what exact circumstances allow for termination of pregnancy in Catholic-owned hospitals. In cases in which physicians judge their patients’ health or comfort to be compromised by delay, they may, like Dr J, obtain safer and more-expeditious patient care by emphasizing to the ethics committee the inevitability of fetal death and the risk of maternal complications. When physicians are unable to persuade the committee to approve pregnancy termination in emergency cases, however, it appears that patients may receive treatment that is riskier and less comfortable than the care provided in non-Catholic medical settings.

"Given the prevalence of Catholic-owned health care today, these issues bring to light important policy questions about standards of medical practice and a patient's right to information. Patients entering a Catholic-owned hospital may be aware that abortion services are not available there, but few prenatal patients conceive of themselves as potential abortion patients and therefore they are not aware of the risks involved in being treated there; these include delays in care and in being transported to another hospital during miscarriage, which may adversely affect the patient's physical and psychological well-being.

"
for women to make informed decisions about care, physicians must be able to communicate clearly with them about the chances of fetal survival, all management options, and their recommendations. After such counseling, which also includes a discussion of the patient's personal beliefs, she will give informed consent to a specific management option of her choice. As with other examples of medical decisionmaking, the physician's recommendation is not always the chosen course. When a physician has recommended termination because waiting until the fetus is dead carries a high risk, a woman might decline intervention because of her personal beliefs. When possible, the course of treatment must be the patient's decision, but it is important that the physician is able to offer patients pregnancy termination when he or she considers it a necessary treatment without having to defy hospital policy or risk job loss.

"Our findings bring into question the ethics of an institution's right to refuse care as granted by “conscience clauses.”12,19 Should a religiously owned institution have a right to a legally protected “conscience” in the same way an individual physician does? These are questions that members of the medical profession, ethicists, and lawmakers must continue to grapple with. The case histories we described indicate that, in some Catholic-owned hospitals, the private patient–physician relationship, patient safety, and patient comfort are compromised by religious mandates that require physicians to act contrary to the current standard of care in miscarriage management."

There are real life and death implications for women being treated in these "merged" hospitals.
