The people of Gaza are prohibited from using a large strip of agricultural land along the border. Fishing vessels and humanitarian flotillas are attacked. Basic supplies, such as construction materials and replacement equipment for its water, sewer and electrical generation (see previous comments) are seized at the borders and on the sea, even within Gaza's territorial waters. Movement of people in and out of Gaza is very restricted by Israel.

Baloney. Gaza is mostly controlled by "Hamas", a terrorist organization. The Gaza Strip used to be Egyptian territory, but they don't want it back.

The best solution is to demilitarize Gaza, transfer political control to al-Fatah, and then the two-state solution can move forward.

      “Woo pig kaplooie”

Statement from UofA Director of Athletics Jeff Long:

"With our 2012 football season concluded, I met earlier today with Coach John L. Smith to inform him we would be making a change in leadership within our football program. I have great respect for Coach Smith and I thank him for the sincere commitment he has shown our program. He made a difficult decision in uncertain times to return from his alma mater to guide the young men in our football program, and I will always be grateful for his efforts.

"I would also like to express my gratitude to our assistant football coaching staff, and our support staff. They have shown remarkable professionalism and a true commitment to the student-athletes in our program. They demonstrated great character in maintaining their commitment to our program.

"Last April, when I appointed Coach Smith for the 2012 season, I indicated I thought this would provide us the opportunity to take the time necessary to identify the right coach for the future and to do so in a time that would allow us to attract quality candidates. Our new coach will be an individual who shares the passion for success our fans do and who is willing to work relentlessly to achieve our goals.

"It will be someone who embraces the expectations of winning a national championship and succeeding in the classroom with discipline, honesty and integrity. The leader of our student-athletes will continuously stress academic accountability and the value of earning a degree from the University of Arkansas. Our new coach will embrace what this program means not just to the university, but to the entire state of Arkansas and will share the vision for the future success of Razorback Football."

Statement from UofA Head Coach John L. Smith:

"I am very grateful to Chancellor (David) Gearhart and Jeff Long for the opportunity they gave me to return to the University of Arkansas and coach this football team. I have enjoyed guiding this group and I am extremely proud of how everyone in our program stuck together and showed tremendous character by competing throughout the season. Everyone on our staff has my appreciation as they all believed in our goals and stayed committed to the development of these young men.

"I would like to thank the Razorback fans for demonstrating their support for these student-athletes and this coaching staff during a challenging time. I enjoyed every day of this experience and this profession has been and will continue to be rewarding to me. During my time here, it has been incredible to be a part of helping this program grow and I wish everyone involved nothing but success in the future."

"Germany passes US in renewable energy and democracy"

They listened to Jimmy Carter, we listened to Reagan.

"Twenty-five percent of Germany’s energy comes from renewable energy sources and by 2050 100% of their energy will come from renewables.

Germans are baffled that the United States has not taken the same path. Not only is the U.S. the wealthiest nation in the world, but it’s also credited with jump-starting Germany’s green movement 40 years ago.

“This is a very American idea,” Arne Jungjohann, a director at the Heinrich Boll Stiftung Foundation (HBSF), said at a press conference Tuesday morning in Washington, D.C. “We got this from Jimmy Carter.”

In Texas the oil & gas industry can obtain a permit in seven days to drill for dirty fossil fuels. For solar panels, the “permitting process” takes six months.

Germany adopted and continued Carter’s push for energy conservation while the U.S. abandoned further efforts. The death of an American Energiewende solidified when President Ronald Reagan ripped down the solar panels atop the White House that Carter had installed.
Also I am looking forward to Tony Kushner. I was not aware that he is the screenwriter of "Lincoln". Kushner is a kick-ass writer---"Angels in America"---and grew up in Lake Charles, LA. Did you know that Max? I wonder why his parents moved there when he was a baby. His father was a clarinetist/conductor and his mother was a bassoonist. Were they associated with the college there?

There is an article in Saturday's Conway Log Cabin Democrat about a group that has started an option to Black Friday called Buy Nothing Friday.

Why spend money you don't have on things you don't need to give to people who also probably don't need them. There is Heifer Project gifts made in honor (or memory) of a loved one that creates a gift that keeps on giving to people who will really appreciate it and not just have another dust collecror to sit on a shelf.

I know nothing at all about Okemah or for that matter much about Oklahoma in general, other than the fact that my mother grew up in Poteau (across the border from Fort Smith, I gather) after a goodly chunk of the family relocated from Columbia County to that area, I guess around the time of the Land Rush, no doubt for economic opportunities. A(n) (un)healthy percentage of them wound up contracting TB & dying of it, though in the case of the great-uncle from whom I inherited (after a good fumigating) my bedroom in Stamps, the end didn't come till decades later.

In any event, I've never gotten the idea that that place is any less dyed-in-the-wool conservative than where I"m from. Had Guthrie or anyone of his ilk (well, I"m of his ilk, but I've sort of forgotten to write songs that everyone knows or do anything else comparable ...) been from, say, Stamps, I doubt it would be particularly celebrated there, either. (I'll be back home in a couple of weeks, but I don't expect to see any "Home of Maya Angelou" signs around.)

You are absolutely right, Doi. It's insane to get out in the middle of all that mess! HHH and I experienced it only one time years and years ago when the have-to-have toy of the year was the Tickle Me Elmo. Oh, the things we will do for a grandbaby! Well, as you say, there were only a limited number of the toys and as we reached for one of the last ones on the shelf, a woman literally slid down the aisle at Target like she was coming into home plate and grabbed it away from us. It was crazy! We left the store vowing to NEVER put ourselves through that again!

Oh, and thanks, SP, for the link to those fantastic photos!

arktrav, on further research, I found that there is a mural in the town about Guthrie.

There are 2 or 3 antique stores in Checotah that I always stop and browse when I am passing through. (It being Underwood's home town was not a motivator, although I don't mean that as criticism of her.)

I think if they had a sign about Guthrie, more people would likely take the exit ramp and check Okemah out.

I don't think the Folk Festival has survived, but I could be wrong.

outlier -- At least as of his birthday in 1998, Okemah expressed some pride, or at last acknowledgement, of Woody's beginnings there, because that year at least they held a festival that day dedicated to his music, or legacy, or whatever. I drove over from North Little Rock to see a couple of good folkies perform, highlighted by a solo performance by the redoubtable Billy Bragg, who at that time (as I recall) had only just collaborated with Wilco on resuscitating some never-recorded songs from the Guthrie archives. A good time was had by all, me very much included.

At the time, I know, this was supposed to be an annual event. As to whether that's continued, I have no idea.

I will say that I have no memory of seeing any "This Town Kills Fascists" sings on the city limits markers, which was a shame.

And, of course, I have no doubt that the motive behind the whole thing was monetary, not philosophical. That's the way or the world, I suppose.

Short and to the point: some people are stoo-pid. Shirley (courtesy of eLwood) at some point, they'll wake up to the fact that it's nothing more than a massive scam.
I'm not even leaving my quiet little bit of paradise (well, except for the leaves still to be raked) until sometime Monday or Tuesday. If then.
