Uh, no, Bluesyoucanuse, the shooter did NOT fail to hit him. The police report, had you read it, said Morales was shot in the shoulder. Reading is highly underrated.

What's relevant is that ignorant garbage like this about "assault weapons" gets turned into people's opinion of what the law ought to be. Brian's post is pretty spot on. I'd take slight exception only in that many hunters use a 30 cal weapon such as a .30-30 that would use a cartridge very similar to this. If you hunt brushy areas where you don't get a long shot anyway the short cartridge kicks a lot less than a .30-06. You can also buy a .30-30 for less than $150 and a decent .30-06 will set you back twice that much. I suspect some folks have bought SKS carbines and other 7.62x39 guns for much the same reason to use as deer rifles in many parts of Arkansas.

But ignorant people post statements like "these weapons are not used for game" which a) are wrong, and b) have nothing to do with the 2nd Amendment which says nothing about hunting or sport shooting.

Totally agree Mr. Morales doesn't care. He didn't complain about the "assault rifle". The problem isn't the gun, just like the Internet isn't evil.

The 7.62x39 mm round is excellent for deer. The doe my wife harvested on Friday dropped when hit the first time. My rifle is a saiga, which is manufactured in Russia. Why did I choose it over a Remington? Because it is reliable in all environments, and easily fixed if ever needed. It also has low recoil, which my wife enjoys.
I didn't post this, but I'm the photographer for the Times and I personally used to own an SKS, great gun. and no,the gun in the photo is not an SKS which is the first thought I had when I saw this post and the SKS is not an assault rifle, its a carbine rifle that was a standard infantry issue in the Soviet army for decades and is still manufactured in large quantities in China (where many US imports came from) I bought mine for 149 bucks and it came complete with a pretty cool bayonet that flipped out from underneath the stock. I shot an answering machine that cost me a job and a date with mine. The lid to that machine flew 60 feet straight up spinning all the way.......pretty cool. I have to say that the SKS is an odd weapon for an armed robbery, Actually sort of a dumbass choice if you ask me as it would not be as easy to maneuver with in close quarters - it's a distance weapon. That's sort of why they made handguns to begin with, close quarter use. Also as far as hunting, the 7.62x39 is under powered for large game, it's made very specifically to kill people with. the round will seriously wound a large buck, the 30-06 has better chance of dropping it where it stands. it's also not a weapon specific round, many rifles are designed for it and you used to be able to get LARGE quantities cheap, not sure why the police report refers to it as an sks round as there's no such thing, but then having talked to a few cops in my day about weapons, a lot of them know a lot about the specific weapon they carry, but not a lot more. Not that ANY of this matters to poor mister Morales, just my two cents

Are we supporting a black market in killer weapons meant for humans? I have nothing against legal sportsmen shooting game but when it comes to humans, I am wholeheartedly against it. I am an Arkansas native with family members with Arkansas hunting licenses but these weapons are not used for game.

Wow, we have 12 entries beating down on what gun was used to shoot at a person and the only important factor is whether "his boy" got the gun rightfully described. I guess with this kind of attention to the weapon and to hell with the crime or the victim, we know why there are so many shootings around the state. The victim is incidental to the weapon.

It doesn't matter what you do with the weapon or who is shot at, or into, or where it happened, or whether it was a cop, pregnant woman, or just someone standing around, you must use the proper designation for the weapon. I guess I now know what is important.

No, Childe. We've simply pointed out that the "journalist" in this case called something an "assault rifle" that isn't, posted a picture that wasn't (if Joe is correct), at least posted a picture that includes high-capacity magazines that are not mentioned in the police report and are not standard for a SKS, got the expected panicked but uninformed response from the professor, and now successfully has you talking about all the Americans being killed daily despite no one being killed here (thankfully).

Funny how Max has (perhaps appropriately) a burr under his saddle about the DemGaz not reporting on seat-belt use due to a perceived editorial bias. Yet in this case his boy David did not simply leave out facts that exist but misrepresented "facts" that don't exist. Sure, the officer started part of it by using an inaccurate term in his report. But if AT is going to do enough research to post an ominous picture of the "assault rifle" then do enough research to find out there is no "SKS round". Yet it's all good because it exposes the greater "fact" you want to believe.

Sure. there are hundreds of guns that shoot the 7.62x39 round, but what is the most common, inexpensive one? SKS. Duh. Probably followed by the AK, and then maybe the mini 14 version.

All the so-called experts here are basically blowing smoke to get away from the fact that it is their fetish that is killing Americans every day.

Prof, I have no idea what your point is supposed to be. There are tens of thousands of guns in this state alone capable of shooting a 7.62 or larger round. The 7.62 is roughly like any "30 caliber" round and the x39 is similar to a .30-30, which is really not considered a "high-powered" rifle. I would bet there are literally tens of thousands of .30-30s, 308s, and .30-06s out there and the .308s and .30-06s are substantially more powerful. In fact, I would say a white-tail is upper limit for a x39 round and I would only hunt "large game" with a larger cartridge.

That doesn't start on the "larger" (diameter) 9mm guns that can be found. And since we're in duck season, how about all the semi-auto 12-guage shotguns? Loaded with buck-shot they would probably be a more deadly close-quarter gun simply because in a case like this five rounds would have resulted in many more hits than one. In the last thirty days there have probably been at least 200,000-300,000 people "walking around with a weapon big enough to shoot" 7.62x39 and larger shells all over Arkansas. So what?

An SKS is a semi automatic rifle, hence not a assault weapon. Assault weapons have full auto or select fire capabilities. There are hundreds if models of firearms that shoot that caliber. How do they know that the empty cartridges whereby just dropped by unknown folks.
The rifle pictures looks like a saiga rifle.
