Scapper, if RuPaul and Beth Ditto are reasons for "Elvising" a TV, then you are really clueless. But since the thread has temperately drifted to the subject of TV Elvising here are some good excuses for giving it a thought. And all of these are just examples on *local* channels. We're not even going to drift into the land of "Honey Boo Boo", etc on "cable"......
"But when television is bad, nothing is worse. I invite each of you to sit down in front of your own television set when your station goes on the air and stay there, for a day, without a book, without a magazine, without a newspaper, without a profit and loss sheet or a rating book to distract you. Keep your eyes glued to that set until the station signs off. I can assure you that what you will observe is a vast wasteland."--Newton Minow (1961).

There is quite a flapdoodle coming from Faux Noise about their interview with Thomas Ricks which they cut short after he said their network was an operating arm of the Republican party. Faux says Ricks apologized. He says he didn't.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/27/t…

Ricks has had an interesting life. Several of his childhood years were spent in pre-Soviet invasion Kabul. I remember reading an article by him (maybe it was an interview) in which he said in those days he could get on a bus, by himself, and ride a few hours into Pakistan to go to an English language bookstore. He was perfectly safe.

Foreign adventurism by world powers has not been good for women and children---not to mention the men folk.

      “New coach”

Cato,

The Petersen story (including the son with cancer and Fedvul’s proximity to Ark. Children’s Hospital in LR) was all the talk Friday at the LSU game (Jesus, it was cold up there!).

One of the things I heard that’s in Petersen’s contract at Boise State is that he can’t announce a departure until after the season’s final game which includes bowl games. Most folks think Petersen and his team will be in the Las Vegas Bowl, and I believe that’s to be played December 22.

But contract stuff like delaying a departure announcement can usually be worked through. I think most people (count me among them) would be thrilled to have Petersen here, though I do hear some folks whining that he ain’t from these here parts and doesn’t have any recruiting reach in Texas and the southeast.

I then remind them of Lou Holtz and his success here. To say nothing of Petersen’s 82-8 record at Boise State.

Can’t imagine Petersen would turn down Long’s offer if one is/has been made. There are the mega-million dollars, of course. But as much as that, there’s the fact that Petersen is pissed at the BS brass for moving the school into the Big East Conference without his being consulted; a move Petersen would have opposed.

Ah, the mysteries and tangled webs of life!

Cato, we used indian fighting tactics in the woods to attrit the british troops as they marched to open fields to do battle in the approved way, we refused to fight in the traditional squares on the aforementioned battlefield, we sniped the obvious officers on horseback...to the British, we WERE terrorists. But one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter, and history is written by the winners.
I have no doubt we would have used IEDs if they had been possible to make.

I can't find an attribution for this.

"If you were a 60 year old male in 1972 who was in the lower half of the earnings curve you were expected to live to 77.7 as opposed to 78.9 if you were in the top half of the earnings curve. That is a difference of 1.2 years and seems pretty reasonable. By 2001, that had shifted so the poorer half had a life expectancy of 79.6 while the richer half had one of 85.4 which is a difference of 5.8 years. Put another way, the poorest half have gained 1.9 years of life expectancy from 1972 to 2001 while the richer half gained 6.5 years."

It is a pretty good indicator of what has been happening, mostly thanks to repubs, since 1972.

I know Max covered one Repub official in a midwestern state admitting to voter suppression.

Now comes this from Florida

A former Florida chief of Republican Party and a former Repub governor both state that Florida's amendment to shorten the early voting period was nothing but
voter suppression:
"A new Florida law that contributed to long voter lines and caused some to abandon voting altogether was intentionally designed by Florida GOP staff and consultants to inhibit Democratic voters, former GOP officials and current GOP consultants have told The Palm Beach Post.

Republican leaders said in proposing the law that it was meant to save money and fight voter fraud. But a former GOP chairman and former Gov. Charlie Crist, both of whom have been ousted from the party, now say that fraud concerns were advanced only as subterfuge for the law’s main purpose: GOP victory.
