eLwood - Despite their constant feuding, Rove would have to admit that he was a still a teenager when Viguerie invented the concept in the early 1960s.

Here's Karl Rove in 1972 when he was representing the "18-to-21 year-old bracket" -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HPnW4EBed4

Rove might have been taking a swipe at Viguerie with his remark that "You can't get a 35 year-old to teach the Republican Party how to get to young people. You just can't rely on it."

I think brother Rove would take serious issue with you over that assertion. Rove's expertly targeted email lists are the stuff of legend plus, hundreds of millions, likely a cumulative total of billions. The big rubes naturally get personal phone calls.

Glad you all are enjoying Perlstein and I should make a disclaimer:
back in 1964 I was a member of YAF. Wished I had saved my lapel badge.
Unlike today's uber conservatives back then AuH20 was bigger than god.
--------------------------------------------------------------

"I used to receive a hundred calls a year from people who wanted me to get into the Green Room at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, because that's where the Air Force stored all the material gathered on UFOs. I once asked Curtis LeMay if I could get in that room, and he just gave me holy hell. He said, "Not only can't you get into it but don't you ever mention it to me again." Now, with the millions of planets that we know are up there, it's hard for me to believe that ours is the only goddam one that has things that can think walking around on it. So when people tell me they've seen UFOs, I don't say they haven't. In fifteen thousand hours of flying, I've never seen one, but I've talked to pilots who have. I talked to an airline crew that swore up and down that an object came alongside of them one night, and before they could do anything it vanished. We lost a military pilot who went up to intercept strange lights and never came back. His airplane disappeared, too. I won't argue for or against."
You are mixing two separate issues.

When to invest or not.
&
What to invest in.

Buffet was investing back during the Reagan (confiscatory)years just as he was in the Bush1, Clinton, Bush 2 and Obama years. Tax rate didn't stop his investing.

Tax laws (loopholes) affected WHAT he invested in, not if.

As a securities trader back in the bond daddy 80's I have just shaken my head as I see TV ads touting investing in gold coins.

Some has-been actor shown on a horse farm says "GOLD is at HISTORIC HIGHS!!!!" "Now is the time to invest in gold!!!"

Fools and their money are about to be parted. Buying the top of the market is a good way for the SELLER to make a good return. (Secret investment advice, buy LOW sell high)

rc, I am not aware of Axelrod ever selling nostrums, elixirs, gold coins, or any other things that Perlstein lists in the article. His article was NOT about election get-out-the-vote technology, but conservatives using mailing lists to peddle useless and questionable stuff to the rubes.
