Saving money by giving more away? I love it. Sign me up. The math is genius. Arkansas gets more federal money than they pay in. So we are for taking all we can from Washington if it saves us state dollars. Careful though, our source is running dry.

Wonder why the "happiest" people live in Denmark? Taxes there are 40%, and banks are heavily regulated so there is no chance to cheat. Education is free. Likewise, health care. Government service is required before attending college. Want to move there? Plan to pay $10,000. up front to join the social network. Oddly enough, they don't smile much, but everyone dances.

Instead of wanting to cut taxes, the GOP and blue dog democrats need to work together and learn that it takes funds/aka taxes to run government and to drive economic growth with new roads, tourist attractions, college students, etc. After they have increased the nominal taxes that corporations pay and have enough funds to pay for all needs of the state for 10 years, then the legislature could revise the tax structure so each source provides 20 percent of the needed amount.

Our federal government is truly broke and will not have any money to bail out anybody in a few years. Why do people that asking the broke federal government to pay everything is the answer to all of our problems.

The Wall Street Journal noted today:
The actual liabilities of the federal government—including Social Security, Medicare, and federal employees’ future retirement benefits—already exceed $86.8 trillion, or 550% of GDP. For the year ending Dec. 31, 2011, the annual accrued expense of Medicare and Social Security was $7 trillion. Nothing like that figure is used in calculating the deficit. In reality, the reported budget deficit is less than one-fifth of the more accurate figure.

Why haven’t Americans heard about the titanic $86.8 trillion liability from these programs? One reason: The actual figures do not appear in black and white on any balance sheet. But it is possible to discover them. Included in the annual Medicare Trustees’ report are separate actuarial estimates of the unfunded liability for Medicare Part A (the hospital portion), Part B (medical insurance) and Part D (prescription drug coverage).

As of the most recent Trustees’ report in April, the net present value of the unfunded liability of Medicare was $42.8 trillion. The comparable balance sheet liability for Social Security is $20.5 trillion.

I'm wondering about some of the assumptions in the spreadsheet, especially if Arkansas is one of the few states to opt for Medicaid expansion.

Are the "new eligibles" capped at 208,000, or will the state be required to further expand eligibility to a larger number if the population increases?

Are there any length-of-residency requirements for state Medicaid eligibility, or can anyone move to Arkansas and be eligible on their first day as a resident?
