Don't know that anyone will be interested, but in light of previous remarks on this thread about Salvation Army and others doing charitable work, just ran into some photos from the Arkansas Baptist State Convention's Disaster Relief Teams' work in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

There are articles in a couple of recent editions of the ABN paper; this link is to the photo gallery on their Web site: http://www.arkansasbaptist.org/photo-galle…

Recent article mentioned the more than 100,000 meals provided by the Arkansas team.

Incidentally, just so you know: These disaster teams work under direction of, and coordination by, the American Red Cross. They don't just pick a place and go do their thing regardless of who needs what, or who else may be doing what where.

But I got a powerball and one number so I broke even on my purchase. But why is the payout the same for a powerball and one number as it is for just the power ball?

Vanessa, since Don W. Reynolds, one of the worst humans to ever draw a breath, personally fired my mag on October 29, 1982......we know your pain and the pain of everyone who was ever in the employment of DWR. Hopefully the children and grandchildren of his cheated employees will get some future benefit from all the structures that bear his name today. But their free admission will have been paid by the past suffering of their ancestors.

There's an active, growing group in Fayetteville who meet, like AA, at the coffee house.
It's headed by a former religious addict, a minister:
What about people who have a problem with gambling?
Michael Vlach noted:

8 Most Common Lies Gamblers Tell Themselves

Gambling addiction and lying go hand in hand. The following lists the 8 most common lies gamblers tell themselves.

1. “One more trip to gamble won’t hurt.”

2. “I need to go gamble to see my friends.”

3. “I’m a loser, so who cares if I gamble.”

4. “I deserve to gamble, because I have had a hard week.”

5. “Gambling is how I handle stress.”

6. “Nobody is perfect; everyone has problems; gambling just happens to be mine.”

7. “This is the last time I’m going to gamble.”

8. “Gambling isn’t my problem; other people are the real problem.”
We have gotten rid of most of the kings in the world, or neutered them into a tourist attraction like the British monarchy, but new kings have arisen to replace them. They would be the barons of industry and commerce---Kochs and Waltons come to mind, but there are many more. Those two families are just the most visible and easiest to pick on.
And who are the priests of our new religion (what eLwood calls the religion of Mo Money)?
I would nominate the hedge fund managers who create nothing, but make a lot of money shuffling dollars and paper around. Also MBA's. Here's a critique of university business schools.

'This raised the question, among others, of whether business schools were actually “professional schools” if business management itself was indeed not actually a profession. And if they were not -- if, instead, business schools were highly sophisticated trade schools that existed to prepare students, by and large, for careers dedicated to the sole purpose of CREATING PRIVATE WEALTH, for themselves as “agents” as well as for shareholders as “principals” -- another question that arose was whether business schools remained aligned with THE MISSION OF THE UNIVERSITY TO PRESERVE, CREATE, AND TRANSMIT KNOWLEDGE TO ADVANCE THE PUBLIC GOOD. Thanks for the clarification Sky. I never give SA a dime.

NWA has a wonderful
"Community Christmas Card" and I've given to it for years. The funds are administered by local school teachers and the benefits go to needy students for eyeglasses, gym shoes, winter coats, dental care, etc. It's sponsored by The Moron News or NWA Media_? something or the other now. There's also two local food banks who run out of food this time of the year and deserve support.

If that's not enough the local Episcopal Church in Fayetteville sponsors Seven Hills Homeless Shelter and the funds are carefully managed and spent. No preaching-teaching but only the embedded goal of getting the beneficiaries back on their feet via medical treatments, training and counseling. It's stunning to learn how many people living on the edge haven't seen a doctor for 15 or 20 yrs, simply shocking.

It's the way the local Episcopal parish does things, testimony is by serving-doing, not preaching at people.

Two good letters in today's Democrat along with a great John Deering political cartoon. One letter by Eileen Neukranz of Fayetteville that the paper titled "Gifts come with price" reads:

"Walmart has generously gifted northwest Arkansas, but it seems to be done on the backs of its underpaid and underinsured workers in this country, and, as we have recently seen, on the backs of workers in unsafe facilities in foreign countries. How could a factory in Bangladesh pass fire inspection with no outside emergency exits?

I enjoy Crystal Bridges, but at what price? There is a direct connection between Alice Walton’s largesse and the business practices of Walmart."

Right on, Eileen.

The other good (long) letter is by Gary McLehaney of Benton and talks about dividing America into Jesusland in the south with its Taliban-like Constitution and Paradise in the north, a land of freethinkers. Letters in the Democrat are like playing a round of golf- one or two good letters can overcome all those other racist, misogynistic, Tea Pot Head letters. In gold one or two good shots make up for all those other hooks and slices and missed putts.

John Deering's wonderful cartoon is about The Three Stooges- John McCain, Lindsey Graham and Kelly Ayotte- and their attempt to vilify U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice for having the audacity to rely on reports from the intelligence agencies in her public statements about the attack in Benghazi. Great job, John (Deering, not McCain).
