Sound Policy:
Just for the record, what Tim Griffin (R-Rove) did in Florida during the 2004 Presidential election was not technically voter fraud. He engaged in voter caging, which is a criminal federal offense designed to deny valid voters their right to vote by getting them removed from the voter registration rolls, which I would characterize as being "voter suppression." Griffin's activities in FL denied hundreds of actively deployed military members of their right to vote. There is no way somebody who has engaged in that type of criminal conduct should be elected to the US Congress, but there he is, and there he'll stay with the help of people like State Sen. Bryan King and the rest of the Teapubliban Party. As a state, we deserve better, but so long as people vote for the R candidate without checking out their background, that is the type of sorry assed people we'll have in public office!

Remember a few years ago when President Obama wanted to talk to schools kids via television and people kept their kids home from school, schools refused to air the President, and there was a national outrage?

Yeah, I do. And this was the President. But sure, let's all go down to Agape and hear about Jesus and Christmas. That's just fine.

louie & CAO, I think you are missing the point. If the school took the same children to a number of productions involving a Judaism, Islamism, secularism, etc. in ADDITION TO Christianity, then there would be no problem. But of course we know that's not the point of this whole exercise on behalf of the proponents of this 'field trip', don't we.

I suspect if the freethinkers suggest the school do just that, the 'Christian' field trip will get dropped like a hot potato.

Personally, I'm agnostic and my kids are now young teenagers. It's never offended me for my kids to be exposed in moderation to various different religions. I'm well aware of the separation of church and state, but I just can't see myself gathering up enough energy to be so amped up about this that I would have my child not go on this field trip. I mean is seeing Charlie Brown going to emotionally damage a kid of ANY faith? Probably not...The world's full of all sorts of different people with different faiths, backgrounds and cultures -- this field trip is just exposure to that. I want my kids to be exposed to a lifestyle different than the one we have. It makes for well rounded, less uptight grown ups later.

Seperation of church and state is not just a "thing"...if we allow even the slightest bend to our constitution then weve done our entire way of life a great injustice. We are not singling out christianity...there is NO room fwheor ANY RELIGION in our school system. Its sad when my eight year old comes home from school asking me how jesus can live in his heart when hes been held back once and still can barely read. We need to educate our children...not fill their heads full of myths that are said to be truths...the constitution is very clear
Yes, Vanessa, it is. Slowly . . . but surely . . . the way of Zeus and Thor and slaves . . . of Mithra and the rest that preceded it, as more and more people educate themselves by Googling the factual (and bloody) origins, histories and fabrications of their man-made "traditions" and "faiths."

Cathedrals in Europe are increasingly empty, save for the elderly and flocks of tourists eager to view artistic and architectural magnificence.

Only in lands where old-time religions are violently enforced do they hang on. Only in die-hard reactionary, frightened and conformist regions like the American South will they fight to maintain their former power till the last breath.

The GOP is well aware of all this. Here is Republican consultant Mike Murphy on the realities facing their brand of politics going forward.

"We repel younger voters, who are much more secular than their parents, with our opposition to same-sex marriage and our scolding tone on social issues. And we have lost much of our once solid connection to the middle class on kitchen-table economic issues."

"A choice between two definitions of conservatism.

"One offers steadfast opposition to emerging social trends like multiculturalism and secularization. The alternative is a more secular and modernizing conservatism that eschews most social issues to focus on creating a wide-open opportunity society that promises greater economic freedom and the reform of government institutions like schools that are vital to upward social mobility.

"The battle lines are already drawn . . . the electoral arithmetic is obvious."
Even dying old dinosaur bigot and fear-mongerer Pat Robertson finally acknowledges that Earth is older than 6,000 years.

Tithe while you still can. The Huckabees, et al., still need you.
It won't be pretty but humanity (like so many already), for its own good is moving on.

Ya know, I get the whole separation of church and state thing. (Ask the Gravette School District) But 'exposure' is what education is about. Knowing what you don't believe is as important as knowing what you do believe. First and second graders are old enough to begin understanding the difference between myth and reality, but exposure to myth is part of the equation. That puts responsibility with parents who might not want that responsibility. Christianity isn't going away and the earlier you start, the less chance your kid will buy in to the myth.

Don't want your kid to be exposed? Join with other parents and develop an alternative.

This is not 'voluntary' bible classes and a captive audience.

Solstice anyone?
If they are truly Freethinkers, they wouldn't mind people being exposed to differing ideas. They criticize Christians for not allowing their ideas, but heaven forfend that a subtle Christian message be part of a field trip. I say, take them to it. Have them also learn about Hannukah and other beliefs from around the world.

Yeah, and also through the fact that the entire play is about Christmas, which is inherently Christian, even without bible verses.
