David Oliver Relin, co-author of "Three Cups of Tea" with Greg Mortenson, has apparently committed suicide.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/03/d…

Wiki says he suffered from depression. It is so sad. No doubt people will say it was related to the scandal over the book. Maybe, maybe not.

My son has gone to hear Mortenson twice when he was on speaking tours. He was crestfallen when the story came out that Mortenson and Relin had gilded the lily in the book. After weighing the good Mortenson has done, and the goodwill he has created, my son decided to keep supporting Mortenson's schools.
"I guess we have to understand the definition of serious: a proposal is only serious if it punishes the poor and the middle class."

"On Election Day, The Boston Globe reported, Logan International Airport in Boston was running short of parking spaces. Not for cars — for private jets. "

"The important thing to understand now is that while the election is over, the class war isn’t. The same people who bet big on Mr. Romney, and lost, are now trying to win by stealth — in the name of fiscal responsibility — the ground they failed to gain in an open election."

Dwell on this fact for a moment: Over the next decade, President Obama's tax on JUST the fabulously wealthy decreases the deficit by a factor of 14 when compared to the savings the Republican's are proposing by raising the age of Medicare eligibility.
Have you no sympathy for the oligarchs? Jet fuel is expensive!

Yes, all of us are constantly exposed to one-sided information day in, day out. Considering that most of media has surrendered to the idea that the Cato Institute and the Heritage Foundation are "centrist" and anybody else is dismissively wildly leftist, there is never a truly balanced public discussion. We are daily assaulted with corporate-controlled media, including MSNBC, parroting what conforms with what is pleasing to the bean-counters.

If you rely on, for instance, the Wall Street Journal or even WaPo, for balanced reporting, you are seriously deluded. We are not afforded any serious discussion beyond right-wing zealots and midstream apologists.

The local media, especially, is very sympathetic to the positions of the Chamber of Commerce and they do nothing to incur their wrath.

To say that we are one-sided in our exposure if we use these alternative sites is to ignore the pervasive media dishonesty that dominates American media. The sites I listed are the counter-balance to the indoctrination we are exposed to daily.

rc, you are only considered a "radical centrist" at a tea party cross-burning.

Yossarian - Your list of favorite websites are worth reading, but inline with my eponymous philosophy, I also like to read the diametrically opposing websites. And I also find that the more mainstream sites like the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, etc. with more balanced reporting are the most informative. By studying a broader range of opinions to reach a conclusion, I believe that one can debate the issues better, and arrive at something closer to reality, truth and common wisdom than the self-affirming "unpolluted news" of left/right activists.

There are some problems with reading websites that only present one-sided arguments. Their readers tend to be less well-informed and more close-minded. They can't debate issues well, and if reality flies in their face, a common response is like: "la-la-la-la-I'm-not-listening-to-you!" while covering their ears. This is especially a problem for people who get their information exclusively from Fox News or MSNBC.

The radical center philosophy acknowledges that both sides make good points, but they can't both be right all the time. In my view, sometimes the liberals are right, and sometimes the conservatives are.

With Maximillian on a well-deserved vacation from the blog, you may have noticed that updates are a bit less frequent. Co-commenters have resorted to perusing and quoting other sites like Huff, Truthdig, The Progressive, In These Times, Dissent, Right Wing Watch, and others for unpolluted news.

Daily, I haunt Mother Jones [ http://www.motherjones.com/ ] (not a primer on child-raising), Z Mag [ http://www.zcommunications.org/zmag ] (striving to reverse the alphabet), and alternet [ http://www.alternet.org/ ] (not a tailoring site).

On the environmental: BP's use of oil dispersant made the oil spill sink deeper into the soil.
On healthcare: What's behind Republicans' voucher plan for Medicare.
On class warfare: One of alternet's frequent numbered lists. How to rein in the plutocrats. Unfortunately it requires people NOT to vote against themselves. These changes are not going to be made by weak-spined "progressives" nor Republicans who do everything their overlords bid.
Because we lived just outside of Kansas City for several years in the 80s and 90s, because the hubby worked in pro baseball in Kansas City for 16 years, and because we still own a condo in the heart of the city (which is next door to the one where a former KC Chief’s quarterback and his wife lived), I have spent many years reading Jason Whitlock’s columns. Jason began his career as a young sports writer with the KC Star and has gone on to become one of the best known and well respected sports writers in the country. I have met him at sporting events and he is exactly the same kind, humble, compassionate gentle giant in person that comes across on television and in his writing.

To be perfectly honest, I don’t read his work for the sports information. I read his words because he has always been able to bring a human element to the world of pro-sports. He gives us a peek into the life behind the big pay checks and flashy lifestyles. He brings it to a level where even people like me can relate. I have read his commentary over the past 20 years, often with tears in my eyes, because he can find compassion in the most despicable situations. And he is often the voice of reason amid turmoil. I view him as a human interest writer who just happens to know a heck of a lot about sports.

So after the terrible tragedy in Kansas City his weekend involving a Chief’s player, I wasn’t surprised at all by the commentary Jason posted today.
Cato, thanks for the research and the current enrollment figures. Have updated my notes. Not surprised Bentonville has risen to the top, judging from observations last night: Bigger band, more fans, and what appeared to be more players suited out.

Bentonville’s dominance will vanish, of course, if it splits into two high schools as have Springdale and Rogers. Never understood why NLR took that route all those years ago; they’re back to one high school now.

Durango, the figures I used are 2010-2012 for classification purposes. They do not count the 12th grade but only 9-11. Here are those numbers:

Bentonville....2,416
NLR..............2,321
Cabot...........2,078
Conway........2,061
Central.........1,986
Springdale....1,968
Fayettev.......1,912

That is 7 @ 16 largest, according to these AAA numbers.
Allen played a great game for Fedvul tonight. He was, as last year, instrumental in the Purple Dogs’ win. The kid is a delight to watch. Hope like his older bro, he’ll wind up being a Hog.

Latest enrollment figures I’ve seen show Fedvul High with 2,231 students and Bentonville with 1,994; but, you may be looking at more recent numbers.

Will tell you this: Bentonville had the bigger and louder student section and overall crowd tonight. And its nearly 300-piece band put on the best halftime show I’ve ever seen performed by high school musicians. Many college bands I’ve seen pale in comparison

When Barry Lunney left Fort Smith Southside for Bentonville a few years ago, I thought he was nuts. But the more I study Bentonville and its school system and the community support it enjoys, the more I understand Lunney’s move.

In many respects I believe Bentonville is becoming the epicenter of northwest Arkansas.

Durango, watching tonight's Ch. 11 sports they had the score reversed. Bentonville is the largest high school in the state and wins, wins, wins, as did Springdale High School when it was the largest in the state. Numbers matter but Fayetteville is a big school and has the Allen boy as qb.

For those who missed it, this LTE about Helen Gurley Brown was in yesterday’s ArkD-G:

Thanks for the article on famous Cosmopolitan editor and Arkansas native Helen Gurley Brown.

I have a weird hobby of purchasing books by Arkansas authors at estate sales, locating the authors and shipping the books off to the author with a return envelope and request for an autograph. I once located Brown after purchasing one of her books and shipped it off to her Upper East Side Manhattan address, wondering if I’d ever see it again. Not only did she promptly autograph and return the book, she also sent a long letter, then another after I responded.

For anyone who suspects that this successful woman did not have love and respect for her native Arkansas, the kind letters she wrote to me show quite the opposite. She may have been rebellious in her youth, as many are, but by later in life she had extremely fine things to say about Arkansas. In fact, she seemed to miss it.

She seemed kind of humbled that someone from her home state would wish her autograph. It is not surprising to me that she arranged to be buried here.
Saw a great 7A high school football championship game tonight at WMS. Final score:

No. 2 Fedvul Bulldogs 31
No. 1 (and previously undefeated) Bentonville Tigers 20.

Third consecutive year Bentonville and Fedvul have met in the 7A championship game with Fedvul upsetting Bentonville the last two years. Big (and loud) turnout from both towns. High school football is taken very seriously in northwest Arkansas.

Hey MAX, if you peak in today, this one has possible overtones for Arkansas:

"Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal's school voucher overhaul was dealt a blow Friday when a Baton Rouge area judge declared the diversion of public money by the voucher program to private schools unconstitutional. The ruling, which came almost immediately after a three-day long court hearing, came in two parts.

The first part of Judge Tim Kelley's ruling declared that the law passed to implement the controversial program -- Senate Concurrent Resolution 99 -- was done in a valid and constitutional manner.

He also ruled Act 2 -- the voucher overhaul -- did not violate the "single object" requirement of the state constitution allowing for a bill to only effect one policy at a time.

But in the second part of his ruling, Kelley declared the diversion of funds from the Minimum Foundation Program (MFP) -- the formula under which per pupil public education funds are calculated -- to private entities was unconstitutional. .....
