Just think what if there was a legal cap on spending for coaches, facilities, etc.? What if coaches coached and players played just for the love of the game? Is Ivy League football, as an example, really not worth watching? If there was no other alternative?

Of course, we'd never get people to give up their $$ for academics instead of tickets, salaries, facilities, etc. But just think what if we did..... We just might be able to change the world instead of changing what's on our television screens.

According to what I've seen so far, this guy's already swimming upstream. His network doesn't come this far south so he's starting from behind in recruiting. He's never worked outside of the Midwest, so he's got that adjustment to make. Said offensive philosophy is going to put him recruiting the exact same players as Saban. Petrino's success came from running a unique system.

This fan base will give him three years tops. Sad, but I think it's true.

Why would Bret Bielema want to come to Arkansas? Let me try.

Bielema was a walk-on at Iowa under Hayden Fry. Fry came to Iowa after having been banished to North Texas State by greedy SMU boosters (after a winning season, as I recall) and agreed to coach Iowa following a run of 20 consecutive losing seasons. He saw at Iowa an opportunity to galvanize a state with one strong football program in one of America's toughest conferences.

Bielema must have learned that lesson at Iowa where he played and coached under Fry. Arkansas is not nearly so destitute as Iowa was when Fry took over, so there is an upside for Bielema. Also, Fayetteville is much more like Iowa City than it is Madison (where the architecture has been described as "neo-brutal"). And Arkansas is the big dog in town without even an Iowa State equivalent. Finally, nowadays the SEC is the dominant conference, not the Big 10. He will figure out how to call hogs.

When Fry took over at Iowa, he revamped the uniforms based on the Pittsburg Steelers and got rid of the old flappy-winged hawk on the helmets, replacing it with the "tiger-hawk." His first year (after saying the Hawkeyes were the slowest team he had ever seen), Fry said of his team (I paraphrase): We may not beat anybody this year, but we'll sure scare Hell out of them when we come out of the locker room.

Bielema may understand how bad things can be, and how good the Arkansas situation is in comparison.

It's nice that the true owners of the Arkansas Plantation like Stephens shares his little sports teams with us of the 47%. We're sorta like the painted on crowds in my friend's vibrating tin football game toy back in the early 60s.

Someone better explain to this new guy the difference between public & private cell phones before he moves to Arkansas so he don't wind up with a Donna Bragg problem.
