Dave Brubeck just passed on at age 91. I loved this story by someone who saw him perform in his 80's.

"Saw him perform when he was in his 80s. Old guy slowwwly walks/shuffles across the stage, slowwwwly, creakily lowers himself onto the piano bench, and then in a slow, creaky voice introduces the band members for that night. Man, my wife and I thought we had really made a mistake, that though we really respected the guy and enjoyed his music, he was just too old for this stuff, that this evening was going to be long and dull and just a little embarrassing.

"Then he riffed for more than 2 hours solid. No breaks, even when other band members broke. No slowing down, no mistakes, just a perfect night of Dave Brubeck in a smallish venue. When they were playing, it was like they were all in their 20s. Such joyful inventiveness, such mastery of their medium. To this day it remains one the best, if not THE best live music I’ve experienced.

"After he was done playing, and after all the shouts and applause, he slowwwwwly, creakily pushed himself up off the bench and slowwwly shuffled off stage.

"Pretty magical."

neuro, I reported the same glitch (?) here a couple of days ago. I thought they had been just sloppy, but it sounds more like they are jacking up bogus support for their chosen candidates. Too bad there isn't some kind of organization to appeal to to report this fraud. Maybe, if one of those 4 candidates use the results in a news release, we can remember to denounce them for trying to pull the wool over our eyes.

I was robo-called last night for a survey about Arkansas politics by some outfit calling themselves "American Research" (Note: there is an American Research Company, American Research Institute, American Research Group, etc.; was the vagueness intentional?). A recording asked some general questions (education spending, lottery, economy, etc.) to be answered by telephony and then asked my opinion about specific politicians (Halter, McDaniel, Asa Hutchison, and Womack). For each person, I was asked to "Press 1 if your opinion [of the person] is very favorable, press 2 if your opinion is somewhat favorable, press 3 if your opinion is somewhat unfavorable, press 4 if your opinion is very unfavorable." For each person, that is, except Asa; when they got to him, choice #4 was replaced by a SECOND "very favorable"! I wasn't sure I heard it right, so I delayed answering until they played the choices again-- was not mistaken. Was this just a telephony typo, or is this some pseudo-survey trying to manufacture fake support for the Hutch?!

@ vanessa The senate passed nearly 700 billion in defense dollars this week with a vote of 98 yeas and ZERO nays. Of course that is about half of our real defense spending... the rest is off budget (as in we can't see it at all), or parceled into other bills/agencies (State, NSA, Homeland, 16 Intel agencies, etc.), war spending, etc.

Among so many problems with the "cliff" lie is the fact nothing like defense will incur much needed scrutiny/cuts. Even if some things like defense incur cliff cuts temporarily it will be for the sake of theatrics... and retroactively fixed soon thereafter.

Austerity for the 99 percent and further enrichment of the top few percent is the only thing which will stick. Always remember who both parties are and who owns them.

We will still be spending so much more on Defense so that they can build up their own DIA, their version of the CIA.
We really need two spy agecies in competition with each other. Isn't that what got us into Iraq? One agency that didn't know s--t asking another who looks at the same s--t and doesn't see anythiong but that is confirmed by another. Throw in the politics of the right-wing attack Iran MIC crowd (no matter what it ain't my sons going!) and you have the tools needed to imagine us into another war, Bush-style. And we can run the national debt up for that, ReTHUGlican style!

Thanks Yossarian and joanimal. Senator I Don't Give a FK About You Boozman (R-AR) has cast a shameful shameful vote against the Treaty Rights for the Disabled, taking a stinking dump on the head of pitiful old soon to be dead Bob Dole who was slumped right in front of him.

I can't think of a single reason any Arkansas voter should have cast a vote for this cowardly man whose so dumb he's probably not actually aware of what he voted no on today. Why, it seems like only September when Senator I Don't Give a FK About You Boozman (R-AR) voted NO on a bill that would provide job training for our precious precious returning war heroes.

Let me dig a little more into the shameful shameful voting record of Senator I Don't Give a FK About You Boozman (R-AR):

July 25, 2012 S 3412 Middle Class Tax Cut Act Nay
July 19, 2012 S 3364 Bring Jobs Home Act Nay
July 17, 2012 S 3369 DISCLOSE Act Nay
July 12, 2012 S 2237 Small Business Jobs and Tax Relief Act Nay
June 21, 2012 S Amdt 2310 Requires Labels on Foods with Genetically Modified Ingredients Nay
June 21, 2012 S 3240 Agriculture Reform, Food, and Jobs Act of 2012 Nay
June 19, 2012 S Amdt 2156 Increases Funding for the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program Nay
June 13, 2012 S Amdt 2392 Reduces Funding for Food Stamps Oh God YES
June 5, 2012 S 3220 Paycheck Fairness Act Nay
April 26, 2012 S 1925 Reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act Nay
Feb. 17, 2012 HR 3630 Extends Payroll Tax Cut Nay

Well, I can go on for another 12 long pages, but I'll just stop there and not dig out all the times Senator I Don't Give a FK About You Boozman (R-AR) voted against food or medicine for little kids. It's just too sickening to dwell on tonight.

What a genuine Douche we've sent to DC....... Be sure and show him your appreciation next time you see him pretending to give a shit about WWII veterans.

Senator Boozeman voted against the UN Treaty of Disabled Persons...He had to walk right past Former Senator Bob Dole sitting in a wheelchair with one hand (from a military wound) Just proves that he isn't a Republican but a Tea-Partier...He needs to be retired to someplace that doesn't have any disabled, old people in wheelchairs... The "Republicans" that voted against it should be ashamed and punished by the voters for nothing else than being able to walk by Dole and feel nothing!!!!!

This Buddhist scholar makes a very good point....

“95% of the congressmen and Republican senators have sworn a written oath to someone called Grover Norquist and an organization called American For Tax Reform; that they will under no circumstances, and for no reason, raise taxes of any kind on anyone. And therefore they have taken an oath to an outside organization which is not supported by the U.S. Constitution – which gives Congress the right to levy taxes, to do the work of the people through the government –but this is a non governmental organization, not elected by anybody and supported by big money people who are making money by not having to pay taxes.

“And these people have signed a sworn oath that contradicts their oath of office. And therefore, in fact, they do have mental reservations, and they do have purpose of evasion and they are not sincerely taking their oath of office. And if they persist in that, and if they are held to that by this outside person who is not a member of the government, then they are, in fact, breaking their oath of office and they are not serving what they swore to serve the American people.”

http://www.addictinginfo.org/2012/12/03/bu…

Now I'm asking....what can be done about this?

This 'n' that from the web, re: THEM.

"Parole: That's a good way to look at the current state of the Republican Party. They lost the Presidency by 4,500,000 votes, the Senate by nearly 13 million votes - and lost the House by 570,000 votes. Their influence over the Senate derives mainly from their routine abuse of Senatorial procedures, while their control of the House is the product of abusive gerrymandering."
"They can't win: Either the 'cliff' apocalypse won't come, which will make them liars, or it will - which will make them destroyers of the economy."

The Boehrner plan that they toss around so much is actually not a plan but an outline, sort of like Mittens' plan in the presidential campaign to never tell what they actually plan to do-"just trust us". I don't trust the members of the House to be able to find their a$$e$ with either or both hands. Put details of who will get screwed under your plan because someone is going to see their taxes go up and it should be the ones who after taxes will still have 2000 times more than the average worker. And also, tax all income (wages, investments, dividends, overseas and domestic)at the same tax rate. Forget that investment lie since most are investing for their return and it may be out of the country. Just like Mittens and his overseas accounts which may be legal but when banks didn't have money to lend small business, part of the reason is that those who did have the money sent it to overseas banks.

And fix SS and Medicare by taxing all income, not just the first $110,000 for SS and Medicare. The programs will be solvent for years just by the increased taxes from the top 0.02% of the earners.

Remember that the ONLY job creators are people who are willing to walk into a store and buy something and that is mostly the 98%, not the top 2%. All together, the top 2% couldn't keep Mercades in business if it was the only car company in the world.

For once I agree with Eureka. Let's go over the cliff. It will produce more revenue immediately. It will raise my taxes some, but I can afford to pay more in order to see the millionaire assholes like the Kochs and their minions from Crossland Construction pay more also. Let's go back to the good old Bill Clinton days. Just think how well off this country would be if George Bush had not cut taxes as he did in the early days of his administration. He bought a lot of votes, but he ruined the country.

Nothing. I think Max has found a wonderful, sound and active crew which should mean Max and the Judge can travel more often and there's people ready to keep the presses alive.

Good job this week, ya'll. We will overlook your weekend work.

Appears there's a political lynching going on in Washington County gubmint.
Ann Upton who had been a County employee and took leave of her job to run for County Clerk was fired after she returned to her job following the Nov 6 election. A Republican won the office. The charges sounded really cooked up. She was fired because she allegedly called a co-worker to inquire about a former co-worker being let go for legal reasons.
Ann had worked for 10+ years and had excellent job evaluations before being fired.

The Hearing on fair dismissal of ANN UPTON will be held on Friday, December 7, 4:30PM in the Washington County Quorum Court Room. It's open in case Ann's supporters wish to be there to support her.

The case has overtones of Republican Faye Boozman's firing of a county health supervisor a few years ago. The charges were cooked and the case almost demanded a grand jury investigation because Boozman would not come clean about the firing.
