Very astute observation by 24fps--probably in jest. I've often wondered though if the government could actually keep something like this covered up or why they would even want to.

The stock answer is that knowledge of alien life would induce panic in the populace. I must be missing something (perhaps a thinking brain?) but I don't see that happening.

Of course if the aliens arrived tonight and started blasting away that would cause some disorder but what if the government just said "yes, they're out there"?

OK, I'd probably run around outside my house a couple of times shrieking and waving my hands over my head but then what? Well, I'd probably go back inside and turn on the TV and see what's up. For a few days, the media would be in a frenzy about it. "Who Are They and What Do They Want?" Assuming that "they" didn't contact us (and really why would they want to get involved in all this mess down here?) our lives would settle back down. We'd still go to work in the mornings. Monday Night Football would still be there. Pittsburgh would change their mascot to the Purple People Eaters of course but that would be an improvement. What is a Steeler anyway?

Uh, sorry, my alleged mind wandered there for a second.

It also doesn't surprise me that they didn't wait 24 hours before starting a search. Perhaps that's the usual policy but they aren't obligated to wait if they think there's a problem. In this case we have a popular, high profile celebrity who doesn't show up to work as expected without explanation. Police go to his home to check on him and find his vehicle and home intact with no signs of forced entry, but no signs of him. Adding to this is a recent break-in at his home. This doesn't really look like a 'I'm running away from everything" scenario & I think they made the responsible decision to mount up a search right away - in fact I am guessing that authorities were initially even more confused by the circumstances than we are right now. And I absolutely believe they could have missed seeing him during the search of the attic - lots of (intentional or unintentional) hiding places in attics.

What makes the most sense to me is the acute onset of a health problem that caused him to behave this way - or maybe an unusual reaction to a medication. Either way, now that we know he's safe I hope we can wish him the best & give him and his family the privacy needed to address any issues & get on with life. He will have very good publicist resources who will help him manage the celebrity aspects of this.

And it's a high profile enough of an event that it will be looked into in detail by the appropriate people. If there are any shenanigans related to this (which I doubt) they'll come to light quickly.

Perhaps his wife or girlfriend is paying too much attention to his large, bald self? In years past I've left mag 2 different times and she failed to notice. I know now the next time I leave her I need to spray paint I'M GONE YOU BITCH on the wall of our long central hallway in 4 foot tall letters. Of course since I quit drinking like a fish these incidents of marital strife seem to have gone away.

It's not really that I've become smarter, it's just because I figure at 57 with false teeth, wrapped up painful feet and bruises from needle pricks all over my belly plus a blinky penis and next to no money plus the 36 year old car I drive....where's the sexy? And I look like Homer Simpson's neighbor, Ned Flanders......

Gee....I'm suddenly so depressed I think I'll go lay down. Glad the dude isn't dead, seems like everyone I know is dying or dead these days......ohmagod...off to bed for me!

I would also submit this - the taxpayers are already on the hook for the services/personnel and capital equipment. There would have been no increase in expenditures as all of these resources were already available and spent for. The argument that the taxpayers are somehow liable is flawed and devoid of any real truth.
