Sky, several years ago I read where 22% of players are counting on the lottery to provide for their retirement. That pretty much says it all. As Bush senior would say, those folks "are in deep doo-doo".

SkyPilot

When you buy a share of stock in a company, you own a piece of the company; you have invested in the company's performance. Is there risk? Yes. Are you trying to achieve "something for nothing"? No. You provide funds to enable that company to continue its operations.

Your stock may or may not pay a dividend. The value of your stock may increase, decrease, or remain the same. So when/if you sell your share of stock, you may realize a profit, suffer a loss, or break even.

When you pay tuition, books, room, board, etc., to gain a college education, you pay for the knowledge, information, and understanding you gain; you invest in yourself and your future performance.

Your performance may or may not pay a divided. Your value may increase, decrease, or remain the same. So when you come to the end of your days, you may realize a profit, suffer a loss, or break even.

When you buy a lottery ticket, you own a piece of paper; you have invested in the performance of the numbers--or other symbols--printed on that piece of paper.

Depending upon the numbers--or other symbols--your piece of paper may or may not pay a dividend; that is, your piece of paper may produce either a profit or a loss; its value will not remain the same. There is no "break even" in a lottery [although I could be wrong if there is a payout equal to the price of the ticket; since I don't play the lottery, I don't know].

But the value of your piece of paper will not increase over time; it is an all-or-nothing-at-all proposition with more or less immediate results.

Now, if you cannot see the difference between buying a share of stock as an investment in a company and its future performance, or paying for a college education as an investment in yourself and your future performance, and buying a lottery ticket with its immediate performance, you need a lot more help than I can provide on this blog!

IMHO

[Disclaimer: Other than the stock-based retirement plans of various of my employers, I have never owned a piece of stock in my life. Still, I must confess that those employers' programs performed very well and I benefitted significantly. On the other hand, I have also never bought a lottery ticket. Even so, I don't think I would have felt very secure investing for my retirement in lottery tickets.]

Cato makes a good point. Given that 1) there's no such thing as a rational market, 2) market insiders control the information, and 3) high-speed trading algorithms care naught for fundamentals, how is buying a lottery ticket any different than buying a stock? Other than the amount raked off by commissions/scholarships, and that the guy at the liquor store who sells you the ticket does not have an MBA in Finance and a bunch of charts?

The only lottery winners are those who get scholarships like DBI and mag's daughter. Everyone who buys a ticket with but a very few exceptions is a loser. And Arkansas as a whole is a loser for turning a blind eye as tens of millions of lottery dollars are literally skimmed off the top and shipped out of state and even out of country. Oh, I'm sorry, Ernie the P was also a BIG winner (and whiner!).

What a sad, sad endeavor! And I didn't even touch on all the addicted 'players' that have been all but ignored, except by the families they have and still are hurting.
And thanks to former Lt. Gov. Bill Halter who masterminded the Arkansas Lottery after other people had tried for decades to git her done, as they say. With all these Arkansas kids now able to get an affordable education....we'll feel the effect in 10 years or so and be even happier then when smart folks start running our political parties and start taking over the reins of government.

Someday Arkansas won't be 48th in everything and we'll mainly have the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery to thank for that. Hope I live to see that day!

Today's ADG is reporting that the AR Lottery is watching carefully activity over in Mississippi which is the only adjoining state that doesn't already have a lottery. Citing the losses posted by the Oklahoma lottery when the Arkansas lottery started, the concern is that we might lose Mississippians who currently cross the river to place the AR games, if and when, MS starts up a daily lottery with Powerball and Megamillions. Of course, MS has a lot of casinos already but current laws don't allow a lottery (of course, all those casinos are on the "high seas", even if the "boat casinos" don't have motors, actually in many cases are in ponds built next to the river or ocean, and as much of a farce as the AR casinos being "games of skill".
