Ann, glad you're safe, I respect your attitude and don't ever get a gun for protection.

I listened to my old buddy who taught gun safety tell many people the first choice you have to make, before acquiring a firearm, is do you have the will to use it. Then, can you live with the results if you do?

A chat with my ex-wife may be helpful. When she was sixteen the family preacher decided she was too hot to pass up, paid a visit to her home when he knew she would be alone and proceeded with attempted rape. She snatched her dad's pistol from under the bed and shot him in the knee. It was a small Missouri town, 1966-67 and the hospital and sheriff hushed it up, the preacher immediately packed and left on crutches.

I think she still smirks about it to this day. Later, she became a firearms instructor.

Several people have asked me if I'm going to get a gun now. I didn't have a chance to go for a gun that night, and if I had, someone would have been seriously hurt or worse. I know there are those who wouldn't have any hesitation about shooting someone. Me, I don't know if I could live with myself if I had pulled the trigger. What those thugs are going to have to live with for the next 10-40 years or life is worse punishment than getting it over with fast with a bullet.

Now, if my son had been home, that would have been a different story. I could definitely have gone Mama Bear on them had they tried to hurt him - and he's grown.

I really have to hand it to LRPD - they've been all over this case, have been great about maintaining contact with me and keeping me posted. They are doing a fantastic job.

In the 90s, I was carjacked with a gun held to my head. In that moment, I was very aware that my beautiful new Corvette was worth much more than the value of my life to those people. Had I not been with someone trained in the survival of these type of situations, I am certain I wouldn't be here today to write this.

The irony of my situation was that it was tied indirectly to another tragedy a few weeks earlier where a crazed gunman came into the courthouse where I worked and began randomly shooting people. A police officer and I were going to visit another officer who was wounded in the shooting when the carjacking occurred.

You are facing your experience with much more courage than I had. Talking about it and the support of your friends is wonderful therapy. I couldn't/wouldn't talk about my experience for months and the nightmares lasted much longer than that. I know now I didn't handle it properly. To this day, I have a fear of guns.

My heart goes out to you and I hope this experience doesn't haunt you. You seem to be a strong woman with a wonderful support system. Best wishes!

So glad you made it through the ordeal and are able to get beyond it.

I would not suspect I could handle it in such a classy manner as you have.
