Actually, after much thought, I have some ideas regarding gun control while respecting the right of our citizens to own firearms. The founding fathers didn't specify the caliber nor the ammunition capacity.

Restrict ordinary citizens to any rifle with a caliber up to 30.06 and a 10 round magazine. Ditto for hanguns - 7 round magazine and up to 9mm caliber. Do not sell any more ammuntion larger than that.

Here's the imprtant part - no more semi-automatic rifles. Lever action or bolt action rifles only. Manually cocked double action pistols only. We do not need to be able to squeeze off one shot after another when hunting. A good hunter hits his target with one shot after waiting patiently for his prey. A housewife can hold someone at bay with a 9mm pistol while dialing 911.

Secondly, we currently have a licensing process whereby we have to study and be tested to drive a vehicle. Why can I just walk into Wal-Mart and purchase a rifle? Shouldn't I be asked to show some proof that I am qualified to responsibly own a firearm? A simple proficiency test and a psychological screening isn't something extraordinary to me as I had to do that to drive my car legally.

I guess I'd better put on my asbestos gloves and suit now...

In 1989, a disturbed young man used an assault weapon in Stockton, CA to kill 5 and wound 29. CA passed an assault weapons ban shortly after.
As Molly says, we require cars to be licensed and insured. You're supposed to be sober when you drive one. You have to be at least 16 years old in most states.
She also has insights into the 2nd amendment and exactly what a well regulated militia is anyway.

Concerning the fiscal cliff, Romina Boccia of the Heritage Foundation has a different angle on it and it involves Bill Clinton:

Many are proposing that tax rates for upper-income earners go back to their levels during the Clinton Administration. What you don’t hear is how we can return to Clinton-era spending levels. That would be a real solution to the upcoming fiscal crisis, and the President could lead the way.

The President says he wants Clinton-era marginal tax levels for families and small businesses earning more than $250,000 a year ($200,000 for individuals). However, tax rates for these earners would actually go up much more because of Obamacare tax hikes already signed into law.

Never mind that this would slow growth and hurt job creation. And no, these tax hikes won’t balance the budget—not next year, not the year after, not ever. Under Obama’s budget, federal debt would continue growing by $7.7 trillion even if the President gets his favorite tax hikes.

The debate over tax hikes is just a distraction from what is really going on: Washington has a spending problem, not a revenue problem, and President Obama is at the helm. According to the White House Office of Management and Budget, President Obama’s two-term average spending level is projected at 23.4 percent of gross domestic product (GDP).

In comparison, President Clinton’s historical spending average was 19.9 percent of GDP. While revenues are set to return to historical average levels of over 18.1 percent as the economy slowly recovers, spending under current policy is projected to remain well above the historical average of 20.2 percent.

http://thedailyhatch.org/2012/12/17/clinto…

It seems like the NRA is aiming for a MAD world. If everyone is packing, no one will shoot first.

Of course, that won't stop the accidental deaths like that toddler in OK a few days ago. It won't help the Secret Service Agent who shot himself in the butt while holstering his weapon at a shooting range---or the guy in Reno who shot himself in the butt in a movie theater when his weapon fell out of his pocket. It won't stop the domestic violence deaths or the suicides.
Vanessa - Eric Holder is the worst, but the real problem is that a lot of people just don't care about their own privacy rights. It is especially a problem with the younger generation that relies exclusively on social media for information.

When the data is collected through commercial services, the government can buy it like anyone else - or intercept it. So far, it turns out that a billion people are willing to be tracked voluntarily by Facebook. The users post everything, including some extreme cases like videos of crimes they've committed - burglaries, assaults, etc.. It's astonishing that some people would publish evidence that can be used to convict themselves, but it happens all the time on Facebook. The prosecutors can't be expected ignore it.

That is the case for quite a few federal laws.

However the main result seems to be that it allows prosecutors to pile on charges and threaten people with 300 year prison terms. When the prosecutors have a weak case they can get an easy plea bargain.

I would be ecstatic to see homeland suckurity suffer budget cuts beyond the rest of the spectrum. And I, too think that the loss of freedom has been tremendous over the past 15 years. But it's been going on for way more than 15 years. The bottom line is that there are too many people, and the density requires rules and stuff that the wide open spaces do not. When I try and figure out how it might apply I can't really think of anything that they can do with it that they could not do without it.

This may not help with preventing shootings involving crazies, but it might prevent your average criminal from using guns in robberies, etc. Plus, good gun owners get to keep their guns.

Vanessa, that sounds like the plot premise of a current hit TV series. This and similar laws have made the last 15 years the most freedom-destroying epoch in American history. As an investigator, you should be incredibly happy. It means lucrative job security for you, but personal insecurity for all Americans, including you.

Whereas previously the law prohibited the center from storing data compilations on U.S. citizens unless they were suspected of terrorist activity or were relevant to an ongoing terrorism investigation, the new powers give the center the ability to not only collect and store vast databases of information but also to trawl through and analyze it for suspicious patterns of behavior in order to uncover activity that could launch an investigation

The changes granted by Holder would also allow databases containing information about U.S. citizens to be shared with foreign governments for their own analysis.
The investigator in me understands that this is a very useful tool for investigators, and that it's not really any different than what acxiom does commercially.
It confuses me though, because I'm unsure of the implications................
