If the Lottery Scholarship continues to decline, so be it. Our family has appreciated the benefit tremendously. My son is benefiting from the scholarship. It was a factor that probably helped keep him going to college in Arkansas instead of a couple out-of-state schools we were considering. And he feels (and his parents) he is getting a good education. Even if the amount of money continues to decline it's been a real help and we are very thankful.

Increase the standards for getting a scholarship and reduce the number of students getting scholarships rather than giving more students less to work with. Oh, and cut the contracts and salaries of everyone who works at the lottery until Arkansas is on a par with other states for percentages going to students. Take it out of Ernie's hide if need be.

This is absolutely the wrong way to do this! The better way, if there truly is a downturn, is to keep the amount awarded to qualifying Arkansas students up and to hand out fewer scholarships until better days return.

If you can only get your hands on 90% of what you need to enter college, you might as well have nothing. Arkansas colleges will not let you in the doors if you ALMOST have enough money to attend.

If these legislators get their way we can expect a big drop in college enrollment and we'll be back on the road to staying old backwards 48th place Arkansas 20 years from now. They are shrinking the Lottery Scholarship down to the size it can be drown in a bathtub.....we know this trick!

I have 2 kids at the U of A. The oldest returned a year ago by taking out the max amount of student loans. The youngest is today a junior making mostly A's with a couple of B's as she told me when she got home this afternoon. She would have never been able to go to the U of A without the Arkansas Lottery Scholarship. Any less in the amount she was awarded would have doomed her ability to attend.

If we lived in Cuba we wouldn't have to worry about how to send our kids to college.....isn't that a sad thought? The 2 best things that have happened for average Arkansans since ARkids way back there has been Mike Beebe's reduction of the sales tax on groceries and Bill Halter's success in getting the lottery passed and creating the Arkansas Lottery Scholarship. Don't let these things fall apart. Especially as the U of A spends 370 million on even fancier sports facilities.

Our national economy has sucked since 2008. We've hit bottom but we're slowly heading back up the hill. We'll see more progressive actions out of Obama in his 2nd term. Don't gut the Arkansas Lottery Scholarship just before we round the corner. Our only hope for a brighter future are these kids getting a chance to get a college education. No, they're not perfect, some will waste the opportunity like I wasted my old Daddy's money back in the 70s. But our ticket to a better future lies on the other end of the lottery ticket I bought 30 minutes ago.

I don't really expect to win the lottery, but I have great faith that Arkansas will win someday when we have thousands more well educated citizens between our borders. The usual suspects are trying to kill this golden goose.....don't let them!

It was sold as a way to get more Arkansans into college.

It needs to be need based or it will generally go to the more affluent that could have attended college without it.

The more Arkansans exposed to college and higher education the better Arkansas will be.
A higher perrcentage of beginners finnishing is important but more exposed will be a big benefit also.

I view the lottery scholarships as a vehicle to get more Arkansans IN college as opposed to handing cash to those already in.

Surprise, surprise, surprise, the goose that lays the golden eggs has an expiration or, at least, a deterioration date!

You can fool some of the people, all of the time and all of the people some of the time, but their skepticism and participation is inversely proportional to their wealth and directly proportional to their winnings.

I note that Ernie "Pass-Me-the-Money" timed his exit just right to avoid explaining where the players and profits went! Once again a large number of Arkansans end up with "SUCKER!" emblazoned across their forehead by out-of-state carpetbagger(s).

Would anyone care to place a moderate wager on whether the lottery take reduces further next year?!

I think part of the lottery problem is that some members of the legislature really don't want educated people in the state. They like people who react emotionally to sound bites and bumper stickers, after all they all did. Thinkers might actually move the state forward but I think most of the legislature see Mississippi below us and see that only one move will make us first in something.

Wow, that's some deflation! Since the lottery has only been in operation for a little over 3 years and with a proposed $1,700 decline from $5,000 to $3,300 during that period (or let's say 4 years if the $3,300 goes into effect next year), does that mean in only 6-8 short years the scholarship amount will be $0? Gotta wonder.
