Altes should check Vanessa's post above before he goes any further. I understand she was involved in that case, and helped to win a great victory for we who think religion has no place in public schools. Altes and his kind must be defeated if we are to prevent the destruction of public education. Teaching the Bible as Altes wants to will simply be the first step toward an attempt at religious indoctrination in our public schools. His bill must be defeated.

This is a good place to re post what NVR posted last night:

"Orleans Parish School Board Bans Creationism And Texan ‘New History’ Textbooks"

In a state as red as Louisiana, finding sanity among elected officials is like finding unfried food in the Bayou. Recently, Governor Bobby Jindal had made news due to his voucher program which will, legally, funnel millions of tax payer dollars to schools that teach Creationism and similar gibberish like the Loch Ness Monster is real (no, seriously, they do).
....
"Earlier tonight, the Orleans Parish School Board voted to amend the way they select their textbooks in the district. Previously, the Superintendent had the final say in “all textbooks and supplementary instructional” that would be used, with optional input from teachers and administrators.

Tonight, the board decided to add a new caveat to that policy:

“No history textbook shall be approved which has been adjusted in accordance with the State of Texas revisionist guidelines nor shall any science textbook be approved which presents creationism or intelligent design as science or scientific theories.

Teach the Bible.

As what? It sucks at astronomy. I don't think it is so good in any of the sciences, especially biology and geology.

As philosphy? Do we teach that?

As history? Well not as a source of facts for history, maybe as a historically significant book, but there are lots of those

As literature? Now that's a concept. But which version? The beautful King James (which was written with how it sounded when read aloud in mind) Or one of the random modernized versions?

Seems like you'd have to speciify. I mean Reader's Digests' David Copperfield isn't the same as the original. Or would you just go to one of the modern sanitiz?d versions, leave out the parts about David having the wife of another man or the parts about beating baby's skulls against the rock.

I think every course should start with an explanation of "allegory"

If I was Altes, I'd want my kids to learn about the Bible in their church, where you can control the interpretation.

The defendants argued that the purpose of the classes was secular, and the court agreed that there was a genuine issue of fact on this question. However, because the primary effect of the Bible classes, which were predominately religious and devotional, was to advance Christianity, the school system had to stop offering them. The court also said that, in its view, "if an evidently religious study course is taught on school grounds during regular school hours, the school is excessively entangled in it regardless of who teaches such classes."
The cause of public schools failing is the teachers.

But the saviour of failing religions will be those same teachers???
That one could test anyone's faith.

Americans have become takers and must take responsibility for their own affairs, be self reliant and not look to gov't and tax payers to solve all their problems.

But gov't should take over religious training that parents and their churches are obviously failing at????

The latest glaring lack of understanding about American Constitutional rights here in Arkansas are:

1) Paragould police CHIEF believing cops can stop and JAIL anyone not proving their identity. (not some goofy new police cadet but the freaking CHIEF!)

2) Denny Altes (elected represntative of the gov't) thinking REQUIRING PUBLIC schools to develope a course and force teach it is somehow not an establishment.

What is Denny's definition of establishment?

Like Outlier, I am out of here, I am going off the grid for a couple days. Hope the Mayan grid is still around when I get back!

Travel safe everyone!

Altes is a joke--even to the GOP legislators. Just ignore him -- they certainly try to do so. He introduces scores of bills, most of which don't even get heard in committees, even if the committee chair is a Republican. The Speaker assigns bills to committees. So Speaker Carter (who was no friend to Altes last session) could well send this to some committee other than Education -- it is sometimes interesting to see where bills land.

Although I don't think much of the "bring god back into the schools" people, at least they're honest about their motives. Altes is just lying if he insists he has no religious agenda here.

I am sure that Altes wants to use the king James version since that is what Jesus spoke! How about going back to more authentic earlier versions? How about using the New Oxford Bible? How about the Vulgate Bible?

How about making it a course on comparative religion (Christianity doesn't always lookl to good when compared to some of the Eastern religions that actually "walk" what Jesus "talked". And, of course, you can go back to the original languages that portions were actually written in and see how translations make a difference and then again, they could discuss the committee approach and how disagreememnts were settled in the writing of the King James version.

Don't be surprised if you have your kids asking intelligent questions in your church though because once you take an intelligent approach, the old emotional approach of several of the local "Christian" sects are in trouble.

Cut to the chase: Let's just call this the "lawyers' full employment bill." To each one of these they need to do an ecomonic impact of the cost of litigation. I'd put this one at $250,000.
