Michael Cook has a new column titled - "Will McDaniel’s Scandal Containment Strategy Work?"

http://talkbusiness.net/2012/12/will-mcdan…

He proposes two textbook scandal responses - 1) Hold a worst-out-first press conference, or 2) issue a press release and then stonewall it.

Actually, I think a press conference with his wife standing beside him is more typical for denying a relationship, not admitting one. That tactic backfired on Bill Clinton with his famous finger-wagging Lewinsky denial with Hillary by his side. It didn't work for Wilbur Mills either when he held a press conference in Fanne Foxxe's dressing room at the strip club.

Bill Clinton finessed the issue in the 60 Minutes interview with Hillary - a controlled environment, not a wide open press conference - then he retreated to the Governor's Mansion and hid out for several days, using the Ricky Ray Rector execution as a cover story until the controversy died down. A direct admission to an affair with Flowers didn't occur until years later, during the Paula Jones lawsuit.

If I were Dustin McDaniel, I would ignore all efforts to make me comment further, My response would be, "All that needs to be said has been said." I have been observing Arkansas politics for more years than I care to admit, and I have never seen a politician get into trouble for saying, "No Comment." In the first place, the public is not going to attach much significance to this episode. In the second place, they will have forgotten about by 2014. Someone else's imbrologio (did I spell that correctly) will have captured their attention by that time. The "bimbo factor" (to quote Betsey Wright) is not all that important in politics today. (Nor should it be.)

I feel sorry for the poor and talented saps who've been toiling away for Dustin for years at government wages in hopes of riding high once he achieves higher office.

Since he was elected to office, there's been a steady departure of members of his top political staff from the "eleventh floor." I think every member of his permanent dozen-person political team is new since 2007. Most of Mike Beebe's extremely coterie has been with him at least a decade. Working closely with Dustin, perhaps they've seen him as too loose a cannon?

Wouldn't a better practice be to spend 30 seconds and google what the ethical rules say about required disclosure and then write about that?

I think you mentioned in an old post you were a newspaper man, or someone who used to be in the business told me that when I was trying to figure out who the auctioneer was (and based on your version of events I would like to buy you a beverage of your choice if the opportunity arises, but I digress) you know the media always uses the most disparaging photo of someone caught up in a mess. I hope all can agree yes, his "inappropriate interaction" would have been a private matter had it been you or I (well maybe not me because I hold public office) but officials elected to high public office are held to a higher standard than say newspaper editors or bloggers. Then throw the legal ethics stick into the mix, this guy shot himself in the foot which is a shame because he should have shot himself a little higher up to really show remorse.
Radical: You left grandma getting run over by a train out of the mix.

This scandal has got everything - lawyers, guns, money, doctors, airplanes, politicians, prosecutors, judges, shady characters, a scorched-earth lawsuit, an unsolved homicide, old indictments, Facebook photos, handcuffs, the bird flu, etc. It can't be ignored. The rabbit hole goes deep on this one.

I can imagine the bumper stickers now: "Honk If You Slept With Dustin McDaniel"

Even Bill Clinton never faced a problem of this magnitude before a statewide election.

After the Gennifer Flowers story broke, the Clintons saved the 1992 presidential campaign by going together on 60 Minutes, but I'm not sure how that tactic could translate to this gubernatorial campaign. I think viewers would be more skeptical about that kind of interview today.

McDaniel has more time to work a recovery than Clinton did, but he will have to change his campaign strategy and hope that the worst is over.

The judge in Hot Springs denied a motion to seal the record. The situation is still unfolding - and beyond McDaniel's control.

I still like Dustin McDaniel, and if nothing else goes wrong, I'm still willing to consider voting for him, especially if he can accomplish some good things over the next couple of years as attorney general. Saving rural wireline telephone service is my suggestion, and it would atone for his ill-advised endorsement of the blatantly anti-competitive AT&T/T-Mobile merger, a spectacular and expensive failure. If McDaniel wants to save rural telephone service in Arkansas, and all the jobs that go with it, now is the time to throw those AT&T lobbyists under the bus.

There may not be any gay marriages in Arkansas for awhile, but from where I sit, I'm guessing Dustin McDaniel is not done with two of them. If I understand all this hoo ha correctly McDaniel left his first wife and married a second one, and has acknowledged cheating on his second wife after being married for how long? He can get Jesus and all, but I'm thinking his lust for the opposite sex is a little bit much, even for Arkansas.

Seriously. The point is that he sure seems to be more interested in his penis than he is with state bidness.

Wonder how much pressure he can take?
>> Though she was famously photographed leaving the house in handcuffs, she has not been named as a suspect. It remains under investigation, but lack of a criminal charge in the case, combined with the recent McDaniel revelation, is feeding a busy whispering mill.<<

Yes, whisperers all. Why was the woman handcuffed if she wasn't under arrest and not even a suspect? Perhaps you're examining the wrong politicians.

Imagine your own wife handcuffed and taken to the police cruiser as the media was there to document that a dead body was found in your driveway and that image of your wife plastered all over the media.

Come on . . .: "At this point the story is nothing more than a personal indiscretion, the details of which are none of your business, or anyone else's, aside from the Attorney General and his wife."

Cone on . . .: "Bill Clinton broke the law when he lied under oath. Dustin McDaniel did not. Apples to oranges.."

Let's see if I remember correctly: He lied under oath AFTER he was asked in an official proceeding about a personal indiscretion, the details of which were none of the questioner's business, or anyone else's, but that's apples to oranges???

If it was nobody's business other than his and his wife's, why was he asked the question and why was he obligated to answer?

And what do you suppose the Attorney General's answer might have been had he been being interrogated under oath as was Bill Clinton?

Do you really think that confessing when he was caught makes the Attorney General morally superior to the President? The President also later confessed.

And tell me, Come on, when was the last time you lied? And don't bother denying that you have.

That dog isn't going to hunt. Not with me. Not with AP. Not with D-G. Not with Talk Business. Not with anyone else. I'm not ready to conclude that there's an ethical issue in this, but I am ready to say we don't know enough yet to say there isn't. I have been told the a.g.'s office help was sought on the Hot Springs killing case. They might properly argue that it's outside their jurisdiction. But I think they need to answer the question. Finally: personal indiscretion is one thing. But the judgment in "interacting" with somebody with Davis' track record is not particularly reassuring. I hope McDaniel can deal with all this. My Christmas has already been ruined by the new prospect of Mike Ross as a Democratic candidate.
