CBB - did I ever say we shouldnt cut defense spending? In fact if youd like to have the discussion I think you and I would agree on a whole host of things regarding our defense budget. Not only should we get out of Afganistan now but we should close shop on all our foreign bases, germany, korea, japan i could go on and on.

But still this wont fix the problem. If you honestly believe that we can continue to maintain the status qou spending wise, even getting rid of the DOD entirely, then i have some beachfront property in Arizona Id love to cut you a deal on.
Well, commonsense and saline, if the ReTHUGlicans will keep from trying to go to war with everyone and having $300 million dollar planes, we can cut the Defense budget by 25%. It is amazing that you find the word "defense" in the Constitution to be more important than the phrae "provide for the common good". A lot fo us think that spending more for Defense than the next 25 countries combined when we already have more ships and planes and rockets and other toys than any other single country is just giving a bunch of 4 stars and their friends in the MIC way too much money and influence. Maybe we just try to take care of America and let other nations take care of themselves rather than be the nanny for the world. The Republican Party, the nanny in the bedroom and in the world but everywhere else, you are damn well on your own.

The apocalypse might have been a little more subtle than some were expecting but, as you readily admit, the Sun God showed his displeasure by making today the shortest day of the year. Ok, smartass, what if this trend continues? You'll be wishin' for some of those Alaskan days.

Having said this though, I must admit I'm sticking with the Christian God for now. I've worn a crucifix around my neck for over 50 years now and not once have I been attacked by a vampire. You can't deny the power of the Cross.

Extending the Bush tax cuts up to the $250K ($200K for singles) helps 100% of us with the potential tax increase.

The executives making millions pay the same amount of tax on their first $250K as a family business owner that makes $250K. I think that gets lost on people sometimes.

Why do Republicans want to protect that extra 3 to 5 cents per taxable dollar on the income that goes past $250K mark? Why? Explain why someone making $49K will suffer a loss of disposable income of $1500 (and the millionaire on his first $49K) because they're worried about the extra tax over $200K (single rate)?

By the way, here's a good calculator to compute the tax impact on yourself: http://www.creditcards.com/credit-card-new…

The Capitol Hill press corps are the eyes and ears of the public in matters of state government and comings and goings of the legislature and their seemingly endless, often tedious, and mostly superfluous committee meetings called so that legislators can collect per diem.

The press media are there because I can't be. Not always and certainly not at those goofy committee meetings with their concocted agendas.

A state law was created to put the journos in the tiny space they occupy at the Capitol. It's cramped but sufficient for the permanent Capitol media team. I say leave them the hell alone and go about your business. I'm thinking there are, or at least should be, a helluva lot more pressing matters on which to focus than harassing the Capitol press corps.

I just remark that I don't see what's wrong in leasing the space (knowing that it will never happen) or moving the space down one floor, but I particularly see the wisdom in having a fair, nonpartisan way of allotting parking spaces even if the lucky ones -- as lobbyists must do -- have to pay. with cell phones and laptops and wireless access the press room is far less of the necessity it was when you had landlines and computers wired to office systems. it is primarily a public provided space for six or seven people who primarily office there, not in their employers' main offices. it's far more a matter of convenience to those businesses than a vital service for the public.

Much like the man who, after killing his mother & father, then asks the court for leniency because his parents have just died, your argument is a circular crap storm. You have been reminded that taxes must be raised because the “voodoo economics” of cutting taxes in order to increase revenue is a bankrupting ideology, a con job only the most duplicitous would still advance. Furthermore, instead of blaming the Democrats for Republicans’ drunken spending spree, Republicans should take responsibility for their fiscal malfeasance. Such constant moralizing by the corrupt is wearisome.
and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.”
Max, I am torn between admiring your forthrightness with which you admit that the press benefit you propose eliminating doesn't benefit the Times and being appalled by the ease with which you pee on journalists who happen to be your competitors. It strikes me as yellow urinalism.
That's the only part of your email, Saline, that makes sense. Where were you and the Tea Pot brains when Herr Bush 2 was running his off-budget war and doubling the national debt he inherited from his father and Ronald Ray-Gun? When the Republicans actually admit that 2/3 of the national debt was run up by their saviors, then you can start knocking Democrats for trying to get the country to recover from the Bush Depression.

Go over the cliff and at least we get the Defense budget back somewhat near where it should be. It will still be 20-30% too high but that is the Republican stimulus for the rich's bank account as long as others fight their wars! Let the Tea Pot braisn explain why everyone's taxes will go up and Grover, stick it up your a$$.

I emailed the White House this morning with this message from John Stossel:

Listening to progressive media pundits, I’d think the most evil man in the universe is Grover Norquist, head of Americans for Tax Reform. His crime? He heads a movement that asks political candidates to pledge not to raise taxes.

I think Grover accomplished a lot. But I wish he’d convinced politicians to pledge not to increase spending.

President Obama says raising taxes to cut the deficit is a “balanced” approach.

Balanced …

But what’s “balanced” about raising taxes after vast increases in spending? Trillions for war, Medicare, “stimulus” and solar panels. Tax receipts rose — after tax-rate cuts — from $1.9 billion in 2003 to $2.3 billion in 2008, the year the recession started. That increase couldn’t keep up with the spending. The deficit doubled — actually, more than doubled — as politicians increased spending to nearly $4 trillion! Our debt, at more than $16 trillion, now exceeds our gross domestic product.

Ludicrous, irresponsible spending is why we’re in trouble. As columnist Ron Hart points out, Bill Clinton’s balanced budget spent $1.7 trillion. “Adjusted for inflation,” he writes, “our federal government would (have) a $200 billion surplus. But instead of increasing government spending in line with normal inflation, under Bush and Obama we are spending $3.8 trillion today. Democrats, who believe we have a ‘revenue’ problem instead of a ‘spending’ problem, must also think they have a bartender problem, not a drinking problem.”
