A long but interesting read. Also, domestic military bases are like small cities ... just the MPs are armed.

Here is an article that shows how the NRA has worked over the years to silence gun research. Here are some highlights:

"The nation might be in a better position to act if medical and public health researchers had continued to study these issues as diligently as some of us did between 1985 and 1997. But in 1996, pro-gun members of Congress mounted an all-out effort to eliminate the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)."

"The effect was sharply reduced support for firearm injury research.

To ensure that the CDC and its grantees got the message, the following language was added to the final appropriation: “none of the funds made available for injury prevention and control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention may be used to advocate or promote gun control."

"Injury prevention research can have real and lasting effects. Over the last 20 years, the number of Americans dying in motor vehicle crashes has decreased by 31%. Deaths from fires and drowning have been reduced even more, by 38% and 52%, respectively. This progress was achieved without banning automobiles, swimming pools, or matches. Instead, it came from translating research findings into effective interventions.

Given the chance, could researchers achieve similar progress with firearm violence? It will not be possible to find out unless Congress rescinds its moratorium on firearm injury prevention research. Since Congress took this action in 1997, at least 427 000 people have died of gunshot wounds in the United States, including more than 165 000 who were victims of homicide. To put these numbers in context, during the same time period, 4586 Americans lost their lives in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan."
"One in 35 Arkansas adults has a carry permit. Afraid to go outside now?"

According to this scenario, there's only a 1 in 12 chance that any of the 3 would have a gun. When the chances are good that 1 has a gun the chances for shots being fired are pretty good. You see that happen every day. You don't want to think about what happens when 2 or 3 are carrying.

No, I'm not afraid to go outside yet, just less safe than if there was nobody carrying.

Let's be optimistic though. Maybe Joe'll quit ogling Ms. Jenny's underdrawers. Or maybe she'll just quit wearing underdrawers.

Then comes alcohol or drugs and carrying a gun; I smell shootouts and duels. Yep our country becomes a modern day version of "Westworld". "

People keep saying this, but at the same time the ability of people to legally carry weapons has dramatically expanded, violent crime has fallen. The 'wild west' has not materialized. Is there some sort of critical mass required before the guns start turning everyone into murderers?

"And then where does it stop? Guns in schools ... guns in malls, movie theaters, McDonalds, Churches, Six Flags, your neighborhood parks, downtown street corners, your street corner. "

We are, in many states, already there. One in 35 Arkansas adults has a carry permit. Afraid to go outside now?

"I may be just being optimistic but I think the NRA has just shot themselves in the head and may take the Republican party down with it. What is the muzzle velocity of that kind of stupidity?"

This is theater, a show. The real work the NRA does will probably be mailed out in a couple of weeks, a new fundraising and call your congressman campaign sent to its members and and nice little packet with details on the number and voting habits of gun owners sent to a bunch of congress critters.

First off, not all veterans have gone to war and even those that have are not all "heroes", a term thrown around all too loosely by folks like you. And if you are too dense to acknowledge PTSD and the risk it entails, then I wouldn't want someone like you walking my dog, much less guarding our children.

This just in! Let's just think of it as applause for Asa Hutchinson and the NRA! Those weren't gun shots penetrating innocent Americans, it was the sound of bloody hands clapping at the NRA press conference.

Imagine! Hiring Asa to be the spokesman of your group! How desperate is that? Could you make a worse decision? Does this mean brother Tim is porking someone new in the next bedroom over for Asa's? It sure did the last time Asa pointed a finger at someone.

I haven't even read the comments above yet, but I'm sure our usually gun worshipers have been out in front telling us how great it is to cuddle up with your assault weapon after leading the family Bible reading in front of the fireplace. They continue to fail to understand it might be their family next when a crazy opens fire. Oh no....in their pea-brains they've already played out that scenario a thousand times picture themselves coming out of the smoke as the hero of the moment! As has been stated, Mrs. Lanza had lots of high powered guns yet 4 bullets killed her in her bed. Love you, Mommie!

NO ONE NEEDS AN ASSAULT WEAPON OR 100 ROUND CLIPS! Innocent people shouldn't be mowed down because of YOUR hobby. You can't take your poison snake to the mall! If your thing is to masturbate in an soiled adult diaper, you can't do that at the mall or the court house or a school.

Your neighbors don't sleep more peacefully knowing you're armed to the teeth....they're scared of you and they're scared to tell you. I just chalk it up to you being just another Gun Nut.

The NRA is a 501 c3 nonprofit.....THAT MUCH CHANGE since they're nothing more than gun sellers, the advertising arm of US gun manufacturers. Force them to pay taxes like their victims do. Cars kill therefore they're owners are required by law to buy insurance on each and every one of them. Therefore gun owners should be required to buy at least liability insurance on each and every one of their guns. Those who ignore the law should be treated the same way I'm treated when caught driving an uninsured automobile. Pro-Carry....get out your checkbook!

More guns added to our sea of guns makes as much sense as adding more sperm to your post-abortion teenage daughter. It makes as much sense as vaccinating well people with the AIDS virus. Can Americans be that stupid? And can they be stupid enough to think they can win a war with our Federal Government? Drones people! Drones over your house, people!

We've lived a couple miserable decades due to crazy people in Congress and crazy people with high powered weapons. Must we live like these another 50 years before Americans wake up and do something about it? Your vote is as powerful as a bullet. You can take out the 6 bought & paid for idiots representing Arkansas in Congress without having to shoot them.

Hide and watch to see how pitifully Arkansas will be represented in the new war against casualty weapons. Watch for the NRA tattoo to show up on all 6 asses. Continue to cringe as Huckabee & Hutchinson make Arkansas look even more stupid in the days to come.

That WAS a shocker. I thought the NRA was collectively misguided...more like insane.

I may be just being optimistic but I think the NRA has just shot themselves in the head and may take the Republican party down with it. What is the muzzle velocity of that kind of stupidity? And making Asa the head of all this explosive nonsense might just tip it into a critical mass enough to go nuclear which would be a fitting end for these guys.

Boooom!!! It will probably make them proud to go out like that but as long as they're gone, who cares?

NRA Press Release Interrupted by big shootout

"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," said NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre.

He went on to call for an armed police officer to be stationed in "every single school" across America to prevent further mass shootings, as critics tried to point out that armed law enforcement officials might not be the panacea the NRA thinks it is.

But before they could finish their sentence, the counterargument made itself as news broke of a mass shooting event in Pennsylvania with multiple casualties, including state troopers.

According to local reports out of Blair County, at least four people were killed and five more were injured in a shooting spree near Altoona. The gunman is said to be among the dead, and at least two state troopers were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
