"While serving as Under Secretary for Border and Transportation Security in the Bush Administration,[Asa] Hutchinson supported Bush's proposals to provide more job opportunities for illegal aliens without criminal records, while tightening security on the border. In September 2004, he said: "Eliminating the fear of deportation will be an incentive."
"In June 2006, the Arkansas Democrat Gazette reported, Hutchinson's $2,800 investment in Fortress America Acquisition Corporation, a company that Hutchinson advises, was worth over a million dollars after the initial public offering. The Arkansas Democrat Gazette story noted that Hutchinson is unable to touch his stock for another two years. The six founding shareholders in Fortress America besides Hutchinson include: former U.S. Representative Tom McMillen of Maryland, former U.S. Senator Don Nickles of Oklahoma, and a private-equity firm that has former CIA Director James Woolsey among its partners.

On May 4, 2006, Hutchinson filed a financial disclosure form, which he was required to submit as candidate for governor, that did not include the Fortress American holdings. On the form, Hutchinson listed his stock and options in two other companies, and even disclosed bank and credit-union accounts with balances under $1,000. He did not list his 200,000 shares in Fortress America, which were trading at about $5 per share. "Just totally an oversight," Hutchinson said when questioned by the media. Hutchinson filed an amended report the next day to correct the error."
Asa has only won one contested election in his life, following his brother Tim in the House of Representatives, defeating Ann Henry of Fayetteville, who ran a good campaign considering that she got into the race late when the Democratic nominee withdrew for lack of funds. He was reelected once with token opposition, and then was anointed by George Bush to run the DEA, and later was named deputy director of Homeland Security, or something like that. He has never won a statewide election in three tries, being defeated for attorney general, U.S. Senator, and governor. He lost elections to the Bentonville School Board and the Prosecuting Attorney for the 19th Judicial District, in addition to the statewide races mentioned previously. Does he really look like a winner?

THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY ABOUT ALL THE POSTURING TO TRIM GOVERNMENT SPENDING, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH.

(Gleanings from a news article appearing in today’s front page of the Arkansas Democrat/Gazette)

HOUSE APPROVES DEFENSE BILLIONS

Bill spares outdated weapons

WASHINGTON – The House on Thursday overwhelmingly passed a $633 billion defense bill for next year despite Pentagon complaints that it spares outdated…weapons at the expense of the military’s ability to fight….The bill is $1.7 billion more than President Barack Obama [and the Pentagon] requested.

“This bill is more money than the Pentagon wants,” said Rep. Jim McGovern. “We’re just throwing money at them.”

The bill halts what had been imminent cancellation of the program …of older C-130 models…Defense Secretary Panetta criticized the pressure on the Pentagon [by Congressmen] to keep weapons it doesn’t want [or need]. “Aircraft, ships, tanks, bases, those that have outlived their usefulness, have a natural political constituency…….” Panetta said. Members of the Senate and House “diverted about $74 billion…to other areas that, frankly, we don’t need.”

The bill would authorize nearly $480 million for the US-Israeli missile defense, including $211 million for Iron Dome, designed to intercept missiles in southern Israel.

The bill passed in the House 315 - 107.

LaPierre is brain dead. Putting guns in the hands of teachers and other school workers is one of those things that might sound smart to stupid people (reminds me of Mike Huckabee). I am a teacher, and do not want one. I have known a few teachers over the years that made me wonder about their sanity. No way would I want them to be armed.

It's also a fairly common occurrence for a teacher to have a cell phone stolen right inside the classroom. How secure would their guns be? And, if they were secure, they would probably take too long to get to... Students would know exactly where at least a few of the guns were. How do we keep them from getting to them? Shoot them, I guess.

While many Arkansans are practicing survivalist techniques in their electricity-deprived hovels, the usual post non-apocalyptic celebrations are occurring around the world.
Here's some previous predictions:

If you're particularly disappointed, ever fear, there is more dread on the horizon. However, most will not occur within the next few days. Therefore, if you thought you were going to get away with not buying xmas presents, you have something to face more horrifying than the end of the world - holiday shoppers.
Wikipedia, of course, has an exhaustive list you are invited to update with your own optimistically pessimistic yearnings.
