Nate Bell without a doubt has little man syndrome. He thinks he is God's gift to Arkansas. HOW DID HE GET RE-ELECTED? Bell (and don't forget his trophy wife) float around as if they are Mena's finest. Oh, wait! They're CHICKEN FARMERS. Somebody PLEASE knock them down a few notches.

Well, hey, Razorback Army Vet. Let's just close all the colleges in the U. S., I guess there would be debate as to whether to allow the private one's to stay open. While we're at it we should shut down the internet. Now, we have mandatory bible classes, mandatory beliefs, and accepted behaviors are the only one's that will keep you out of jail. But of course we will certainly have mandatory gun ownership and the more you own, the higher your place in society. I don't know what we do about all those folks that don't look like us. With all those guns, it might be a moot point.

Nate Bell is one of those type of representatives who think they will be judged by the number of bills they get passed. Good representatives know they will be judged by the number of bad bills they kept from being passed. Unfortunately, there are not too many of the latter, as the number of bad bills that become law in the Arkansas spirals out of control.

Let's see if I can follow Nate Bell's impeccable logic:

1. We provide a scholarship ("money," "dollars") for a kid who doesn't have enough money to pay for college so he can pay for college.

2. If the kid doesn't successfully complete his four years and graduate, he must pay back the scholarship (money, dollars), which now it turns out was not actually a scholarship but a loan.

3. He will be able to "pay this BACK" because he didn't spend the money to pay his college bills; he put the scholarship (money, dollars) in the bank, so it is there to be paid back in case he doesn't graduate.

4. OR ELSE, his parents, who didn't have money to send him to college in the first place, now have money equivalent to the scholarship (money, dollars) with which to PAY BACK the money that was furnished by the scholarship.

5. OR ELSE, he is now able--without a college education--to get a high-paying job that will enable him to pay back all of that scholarship (oops: "Loan") (money, dollars).

Is that the way it works, or did I miss something somewhere?

Just wonderin'.

Clearly, from the picture above Nate Bell can't sleep at night because he's worried the money is going to dry up and he won't be able to eat 2 meals for every one we eat. Slap a robe and a crown on his head and he's the spitting image of Henry VIII.

I was prepared to copy and paste the whole NY Times story this morning, glad Max saved me from that chore. This subject is very important to me since I have 2 daughters in college at the U of A in Fayetteville. The oldest is finishing up her degree taking out student loans, the younger one is there thanks to the Arkansas Lottery Scholarship. We're walking a very narrow tightrope financially trying to get these girls thru their last year of college.

Not a week goes by that mag and I don't wake up scared to death that an unforeseen expense will pop up and stop our kid's education in a lurch. Last month the motor blew up in our newest car and here comes Christmas! We're making due driving 2 very old cars that will do fine around town but Allah help us if we have to make a quick trip to Fayetteville. So be it, we're not going to go spend money on another car or a 3000 dollar plus repair of mag's car.....we'll live with it and laugh and laugh someday when the kids are out of college.

All this doubles down on my fear that Arkansas legislators will lower the amount awarded by the Arkansas Lottery Scholarship. Having a percentage of what it takes to attend college is about the same as having zero. Go to any of your utility companies and tell them you almost have enough money to pay your bill and you'll spend January without that utility, without it forever if you don't come up with 100% of the money owed.

So what if I never come up with the money to fix mag's car, that won't hurt the state even a tiny bit. But if Arkansas loses our newly found, thanks to the Lottery Scholarship, record enrollment in state colleges we can kiss our "better state in the future" chances goodbye.

Without a better educated population Arkansas will be doomed to more Nate Bells, more Jason Raperts, more Dimmy Alteses, more Paul Van Dalsems, more Justice Jim Johnsons, more Mike Huckabees. Plus a population of idiot rednecks who will continue to cling to their NRA, high powered assault weapons and loopy religion.

Our kids are making good grades in the hopes of never having to work at Wal-Mart. They understand they must help make Arkansas a better place for the children they'll bring into the world someday. We can't pull the rug from under non-rich Arkansas students unless we want to stay 48th in all bad things forever. God is not blessing Arkansas. We can't shoot our way out of 48th spot, we'll live the Arkansas Plantation life forever if we don't protect the one thing that WILL save us in the future....the ability to get our kids into college and keep them there till they graduate.
