Loblolly is the best artisan ice cream EVER. I urge you all to give it a try. I'd be willing to bet they have made some peppermint ice cream. Nothing rivals their salted caramel flavor! At the Green Corner Store.

If you simply have a craving for peppermint, growing your own is still legal and easy. Too easy, that is - it'll take over your garden in a jiffy if you don't grow it in a container. This last summer, I had to provide a little artificial shade to keep them alive in the heat, but I still got a bumper crop.

If you want to get technical, there are hundreds of types of mints, but generally people think of peppermint, spearmint, apple, pineapple, and chocolate mint.
Here's a short article:
http://www.gardenguides.com/97817-kinds-mi…

If you are concerned about health effects, the NIH National Library of Medicine has an easy-to-read blurb:
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginf…

You can dry the leaves by hanging a bundle of stems in your house until the leaves can be crumbled. I put the leaves into a small container, like an herb jar and toss it in the freezer to extend its usual shelf life beyond 6 months. I just harvested more from my garden this weekend.

The local garden guy, P. Smith, suggests a few ways to use your mints, but you can find plenty of recipes on-line:
http://bonnieplants.com/library/6-ways-to-…

Like our Anne Bonney Pirate, you could have your own peppermint ice cream next year without the commercial uncertainty.

At our house, we make our own. It is very thick, very rich, and very creamy:

2 1/2 c whole milk
2 3/4 c sugar
1 tsp salt
2 1/2 c half and half
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
6 c whipping cream
2 c peppermint candies (about one 12 oz bag)

Scald the milk then remove it from the heat. Add sugar and salt; stir until dissolved. Stir in half and half, vanilla, and whipping cream, Cover and refrigerate 30 minutes. Crush peppermints in food processor or blender (or in a sturdy bag with a hammer). Stir the peppermints into the chilled mixture, then freeze in an ice cream freezer.

And now Max has a food blog. Just what he always wanted.
