Ferndale got the full effects of the snow, good and bad...it's beautiful, but it damaged a lot of trees. My wife and I went out this am to get gas for our elderly neighbor's generator, and came across an entire family hitchhiking. They asked for a ride to I-430, but they lived in East End, so we took them all the way home. After that I took my chainsaw out to clear trees off the road, cut a tree off of my neighbor's driveway. Finally got in the house after dark, happy to warm up with a nice fire, my golden retriever and two cats.

DBI, an especially good post from you today. One would expect a historian to love traditions such as a 150-year-old oak tree, and living in the family heirloom house in the middle of downtown Fort Smith, and your devotion to your late mother and her surviving brother is very admirable. I hope you and Mag, and the girls, have a very good New Year.

We had a beautiful non-dangerous snow in Fort Baptist yesterday. It was kind to trees and power lines. Our electricity never even blinked. Though it was 21 when I woke up this morning I've heard people driving down the streets as if there's no problems at all.

Due to the freakishness of our 105 year old house there's no way to heat our bedroom, so we always depend on our electric blanket and life is good under that blanket and is apparently OK on the top of the blankets because our cat bed partner never seems to get cold. When I lived in this house with my parent, my father, the cheapskate, declared no heat upstairs in the wintertime, so I'm used to sleeping in a room that's as cold as the great outdoors. I actually think it's more healthy though I have no proof.

Burying the power lines is the only hope for a outage free future. OG&E started burying lines in Fort Baptist at least 20 years ago, but we still fall victim to outages caused by transformer blowouts. Of course an hour or 2 without power is easy to live with, but those 4 days without power back in 2000 were a bummer. And my neighborhood still shows blue tarps and boarded up windows due to the 2004 killer hail storm. We continue to drive dimpled old cars which remind me of that horrible night. I wonder if I'll live to see the day when there aren't any reminders of the worst hail storm I've ever witnessed?

I'm fixing to trek over to Oklahoma to deliver my Uncle's Christmas presents. He's suddenly doing much much better though he'll never recover much from being ruined by a major stroke that apparently cleaned out his pipes. The mini-strokes are gone and he looks healthy again, but has one dead side of his body and still can't speak. Trying to understand what he wants is as frustrating as anything I've tried to do, but it is what it is and I know Ma would want me to try to make his life a little better for as long as it lasts.

Happy Birthday, WC....before I forget and good lord, Citizen1....how scary! There is a 150 year old, at least, giant oak tree outside our bedroom. It's a magnificent tree and very healthy as far as I can tell. But though we got none of the high wind that was forecast for yesterday and last night, a few days before we had very high winds at night and I know if that giant tree decides to fall on us....we're goners....if it falls my way they'll have to bury mag and I along with our mattress because they'll be no way to separate our mushed bodies from the wreckage.

My great grandfather made his only visit to Arkansas back in 1969 when he was 88 years old and he spent every morning visiting that old tree, swore up and down that he'd never seen a bigger tree in his life....guess they don't grow that big in Missouri? So everyday I look at that tree and see an old man in overhauls standing at the bottom looking up with his filmy old eyes in total amazement. Good times.....good times.

So...off to Oklahoma....prayers pray! Good luck, my powerless friends!

Great advice, AI. And Citizen, so glad you're ok. I hate pine trees for exactly the reason your story illustrates. They're brittle as hell and they'll fall right through a house.

I've had to drive both last night and today. I can testify that people are doing some absolutely stupid things on the streets and highways. Wish they would all ready eL's post above. It's amazing how well you can get around on snow if you just slow down and think.

The ice we'll have in the morning is another story... It will be wicked out there in the morning.

WEell, I told myself that after lunch, the truck should be able to handle 10" or so of snow and I was quite wrong. It go hung, on almost level ground, because of the melting water on the bottom of the snow mass. I used the tractor to clear a path behind it and a shovel to clear the tracks and got it back into the driveway but have decided that the post office can wait a day. I did clear a 5' width down the straight part of the road so that the sun and the gray/black rock might melt that section but the slope creates an issue since there is a drop-off on both sides of about 4 feet so I have an email out to the county judge to see if they can take a pass once theh major county roads are done. The outgoing mail was only bills and thank-you notes anyway.

Being a NWA resident for 40 yrs let me offer some pointers about driving in snow.

Slow down. Keep a healthy distance from the car in front. Unless you have an all wheel drive avoid steep, untreated hills. Use brakes sparingly, use gears to slow down.
If your auto has ABS brakes don't pump the pedal just apply a gentle pressure.

If you're inexperienced driving in snow try to find a vacant parking lot where you can practice sliding and braking so you know what it expect in case it happens.

When daytime driving wear polarized sun glasses even if cloudy.

Keep your gas tank full. Put a bag of cat liter in your auto. In case you get stuck with wheels spinning you can spread the liter in front of tires for added traction. I once used newspapers for this.

If you travel during winter keep a roll of duct tape in your auto. If a snow hits while night driving, stop, dry the headlight and put some duct tape over the top half of your headlights. This reduces the blinding halo effect coming off your headlights and gives you greater range of vision. I've heard that covering half of headlights is prohibited but the several times I did it no cop ever stopped me.

We had quite a good snow down here in Arkadelphia. It's going away pretty fast though. It's amazing what the sun can do to snow even though the temps are still below freezing. In the last hour the snow slid off the hood of my wife's car already. We never did get without electricity at least not while we were here.

We had to cut short Christmas at my Mammaw's cause the weather was getting so bad last night. She's 94 and in excellent health, but she can't last forever. We know we have not enough time left with her for sure. She cooked enough food for twenty people as usual.

This stuff is pretty, but I don't care for it much at all. Too cold, and too dangerous to get around in. My wife took my car and drove herself to work. She decided to use her last vacation day on New Year's Eve instead of today so she could have a 4 day weekend. This snow and cold will pretty much kill the rest of my time off also. Is it Spring yet?

My Corgi says to tell everyone not to complain about their feet and hands getting cold in the weather. :)

My experience with loss of power in the ice hurricane in 2000 taught me a lesson. 7 days of no power when temps are below freezing will do that. When we built a new home in 2001, we had it wired so if energy was lost, I could pull the main switch (to keep power from going back out on the lines) and plug in my 5,000 watt generator and presto!. I've used it twice since then. We lost power when the tornado ripped through here in 2009. I was the only house on the street that had lights at night for about 5 days. And I never depend on one utility. We heat with natural gas. Just need energy to turn the furnace fan. Next time you build a house....consider it. And another suggestion. Put in a safe room. FEMA will pay half up to $1,200. We use ours (8x10) as a walk in closet and we were in it when the tornado struck out area. You will be glad you have one if you get hit.
