Thank you, Sister, and a belated Merry Christmas to you, WIES and even the neighbor lady.
Indeed, I wish all of you on the blog a happy and safe rest of the year and a wonderful 2013, and especially warmth and power restored -- immediately if not sooner. (Well, maybe not Tim's, but since I'm in the 4th, I guess I'll have to concentrate on Tom. Might even practice high kicking.)

Thanks, mountaingirl. I had some German visitors and stuck on where to take them since they were so gracious to us when in Germany, we discovered that General Schwarkoph was being honored at West Point by the Corp so we drove down from Ridgefield CT and watched the proceedings. He started the ceremoney by insisting that all West Point personnel who had served with him in the Gulf join him on the reviewing stand and then when that was accomplished, we watched what has to be one of the most impressive ceremonies possible as columns of soldiers-in-training poured from every direction. Afterwards, we went to eat at the Thayer Hotel on the West Point campus where every dining room had a TV on the auditorium where the general was speaking to the corp. He started with a Q & A and when no one raised their hands, suggested that if they didn't have questions, they might as well do push-ups and the hands shot up. He spoke to the Corp afterwards for about an hour, pacing back and forth across the stage, i.e., Tom Peters, without any notes, on leadership which seems to be a missing component in too much of the general staff according to Tom Rick's new book, The Generals.

Ask anyone...Who can Rip Off the Government better than a Republican?

"Hunting Deutsch, [appt by Gov Scott] who oversees the state's unemployment programs as executive director of Florida's Department of Economic Opportunity, resigned his $140,000-a-year position after just eight months in a letter to Gov. Scott Tuesday, The Associated Press reports.

Deutsch reportedly began receiving government benefits in 2009 after he was laid off from his executive position at BankUnited, where he was employed for 35 years. According to the AP, Deutsch also received a confidential severance from the bank, which failed that year and was seized by federal regulators.

The Florida Current first reported Deutsch nearly maxed out on more than $25,000 in government benefits paid at the maximum of $275 per week over 91 weeks between 2009 and 2011 -- a period during which he and his wife took multiple trips abroad despite a state law requiring unemployment recipients to be available to work.

      Happy belated Christmas, blog buddies!

I went to Teabagger Heaven (Alabama) for a few days and had a wonderful time. Most of my family are evangelical Republicans, but they're a hoot once you get a few drinks down their gullets. I honestly do adore those people even though they'd never be accepting of WIES and me as a married couple. We don't lose any sleep over it.... I was home by the 24th and WIES was home on the 25th after visiting her family.

It's been non-stop fun since we've been back. We have two dogs and a cat and we're also taking care of the dog next door (his parents are out of state for the holidays). WIES spread some rock salt on the back porch when it started getting icy and all HELL started breaking loose when we took the dogs outside.

Did y'all know rock salt burns dogs paws like they are walking on lava? I certainly didn't, nor did WIES. I took the neighbor dog outside and I literally thought he was having a seizure. WIES heard the commotion, grabbed him in her arms and he bit her and defecated all over the place (it wasn't a major deal. She bled for a while but he has had his shots).

Our dogs then walked on the porch and had the same reaction (minus the biting and defecation, thank goodness). I googled "rock salt'' and "dogs'' and learned that is a HUGE no-no. Who knew?? WIES hosed off the porch and there hasn't been another episode.

But, this wasn't the worst of it. Around 6 Christmas, I heard transformers blowing all over the place. We didn't lose power but it may have been worse. Our 71-year-old neighbor did lose power and she's been here since. (I think I've written posts about her. She's a nice lady, but her 2 children live at least 500 miles away and she has no friends. As a result, she depends on the kind-hearted lesbian couple for EVERYTHING. I don't think I mentioned her hip surgery when I did all of her grocery shopping for 3 months).

I bet she did a jig when her power went off because she knew she was going to her idea of Club Med. She ate Christmas dinner with us and watched us open our presents to each other. WIES made her a delicious breakfast the next morning and shoveled a pathway to her house from ours in addition to getting all the snow off her car. We had leftovers last night but I cooked a fantastic casserole tonight with yeast rolls. I also baked chocolate chip cookies. I've never seen a woman happier, although the scowl on my face is starting to get a bit noticeable.

Neighbor lady got a call from Entergy tonight telling her not to expect power until Tuesday. She smiled when she announced this while I wanted to stab my jugular repeatedly with a butter knife. I understand good karma, but I CAN'T DO THIS UNTIL TUESDAY! I was drinking coffee today and noticed she didn't have her dentures in. Believe me, it's not a pleasant sight and not one you want to see the first thing in the morning.

Did I mention she has an 11-year-old chihuahua who is a bitch from hell? I love all animals but I can't stand this dog. Our dogs hate her, too. I took her outside twice today and she's a biter. I only got nipped but was tempted to drop-kick her across Lee Street (no worries, I didn't).

I had no idea that our having power was a curse. On second thought, she'd be over here anyway.

Verla and Doigotta, I'm so sorry for your losses this year. Y'all are great women and I wish I could hug your necks. You have lots of folks who care about you, even some you've never met (from this blog).

Love to all,

Mrs. Sistertoldja

Today, Ms. Silver and I have been up in Hermann, MO, with her sister. The sisters rise from 19th Century Missouri River German root-stock. Hermann reminds us of Eureka Springs. With more spatzle.

Today, I treated myself to a self-indulgent drive down Highway 19 in my hot-rod Volvo wagon. Blizzaks. All wheel drive computer controlled to prevent alarming cross-ups on salted roads. Whee.

Fortunately, Ms. Silver has learned to enjoy the whee part, bikes and cars.

Just this time last week, late after dark on a Thursday, the local jury found my old friend and long-time client, who is 74 years old, not guilty of the murder of his adopted 26-year-old son.

It was the first murder trial in my 30-year career.

Makes the rest of the world's problems look a little silly.

They all are playing the game they have played over and over and over and over again - then the Republicans capitulate. Boehner is cronies with Pelosi and Reid. They are all one in the same. Why the Republicans want to keep losing is an outrage. They refuse to learn any lessons from their losses AND their wins. Boehner, McConnell, Cantor and all the entrenched, "career" politicians from both sides of the aisle need to go. Conservatives have an extremely tough road ahead because the media does nothing but trash us. We simply cannot give up and skulk away with our tail between our legs. We must rise up, brush ourselves off and continue to fight and fight harder and unite like never before. United we STAND, divided we fall. When the "takers" start realizing that they aren't getting the free ride they thought they were, things will start to unravel for Obama. The dumbed-down Americans will wise up fast when they are taking a huge hit in their pocketbook. No one will escape the Obamatax. No one.

Maybe this is the highway department's job, but after driving 10 hours from Indiana, almost entirely through area that got snow and ice, it was pretty galling to encounter our first interstate ice on the I-30 bridge. Got stuck going over big stretches of it on the on-ramp to I-630 and again--on an entire lane--near the Woodrow Street exit. Even if we don't have the equipment to deal with snow and ice like they do in the Midwest, you'd think that--whoever's responsibility it is--we could at least manage to get what might be the busiest thoroughfares in Central Arkansas cleared almost two days after the storm.

In the aftermath of the ice/snow storm here, I must thank the Jefferson County road crew for their aid in making our road passable.
And I forthwith make a promise to kick a certain neighbor in the shins -- higher, if I can manage it -- for letting me deal (initially) with making sure we could get out at all should it have been necessary before the county crew got here. Two hours spent moving broken trees and limbs and knocking ice and snow off bent pines -- and getting plenty of ice and snow down my back, thank you very much -- so we could ease under 'em.
So when does good neighbor make a (fleeting) appearance? I'd barely gotten back in my yard when he fires up his truck and heads out. Right nice fellow.
Selective memory. Bush's two wars were waged "OFF BUDGET." BHO brought them back into the budget but that simple fact escapes Saline.

JFK-LBJ did a similar thing in 1962 when S.S. contributions began to swell due to post WWII generation entering the work place. Took S.S. funds and put them in general budget to pump up the numbers.

Five Republican and three Demo presidents haven't had the balls to quit borrowing the S.S. funds. When Reagan upped S.S. contributions it gave a boost to his general budget.

Couldn't be better, I think we probably agree a lot as far as the defense budget goes. Did you know that our one country accounts for half of all the military spending in the world!!!! That is stupid. Why are providing the defense for Germany and Japan when those nations are very wealthy and should provide for their own defenses?

I do differ on the fiscal cliff than most of the readers on this blog though. I think the Republicans should stand their ground on the fiscal cliff and refuse to raise the debt limit too and I think Obama would feel the heat from the people back home. Reagan rightly noted, “When you can’t make them see the light, make them feel the heat.” (However, I believe the Republicans for the most part are wimps and will fold themselves.)
Saline, was Bush's under the table war hidden from that total like it was for all of his time in office? You can't compare any data from 2001-2008 because the "accountants" (the POTUS and VPOTUS) were lying to the American people. You can't count Social Security payments or Medicare in any comparison because this money was paid in and just because the administrations starting back to the 1960's spent it rather than set it aside, it still is the people's money on loan to the government so we can have crazy wars and missles that go nowhere and airports named after Ray-Gun.

When you want to get serious about the budget, you need to start with a full new GOP U S House contigent. The group there now is bat-shit crazy and has no loyalty to the country that is paying their salaries.

But , I agree with one thing-the idea that the GOTP is religious is an outright lie, unless it is the Taliban.
