Vanessa You're the first person I've ever heard express the position that is at the core of my argument about abortion legislation.

A government (just as an individual person) has only three alternatives concerning abortion: forbid, permit, require.

And any government that has the authority to forbid can also take the authority to require--such as China.

So I don't think a government should be given any authrity in the matter. I maintain that the decision should be left to the woman (and her conscience), her husband (if any) her physician, and her God (if any).

IMHO

I'll never be able to understand why anyone would try to hamper a woman's ability to control the number of babies she squirts from her body? Birth control should be given away free on street corners. We ought to have special boxes of Cheerios laced with birth control substances. A packet of BC pills should come in your AT&T bill each month.

There is no commitment like the one people take when they co create. I used to tell my girls a baby is a solid 20 year 24-7 commitment but now I think it's more like 30 or 40 years. I don't think my old dead Ma ever turned off the motherhood switch even when she was laying in a hospital bed unable to do a damn thing except give me advice.

Done well, parenting is a beautiful thing that gives more to this planet than raising fields of corn. My kids are worth every sacrifice mag and I made, but we only had 2 children because we had a sneaky suspicion we couldn't afford more. And now almost 26 years into it, our suspicion was right on. In all those years of huffing & puffing under the sheets we never took any chances. And we never made any extra kids we couldn't afford. We were skillful in our application of birth control methods and we were lucky since NOT is the only sure form of birth control.

I took the painful step of talking about sex & babies with my girls in their early teens. I told them wanting to have sex was perfectly normal and the urge would grow with them. But having sex doesn't have to equal getting pregnant, so I told them to come to us the very second they decided they wanted to have sex and we'd get them birth control pills so that they wouldn't wind up being children raising children.....and it worked! They faithfully and without fail take their little pills every morning. I paid the BC bill until they were able to pay themselves.

Since everyone I know has had grandchildren for a long time I'm hankering for a grandchild. But more important than my hankering is my girl's ability to pick the time they'll have to share their life with a 24-7 baby. Since mag & I were older parents we know the benefits of waiting to reproduce. Even thought I was 31 & mag was 27 when our first was born.....we stood and quaked in fear the day we brought her home....just knowing we were too stupid to keep the little thing alive. I can't imagine going thru that at 15.

God ain't told me squat in 57 years and she sure never spoke to me during a sexual act. So I'll take the help that science provides and hope there comes a day when no one who doesn't want to be pregnant finds themselves in such a condition. Birth control reduces abortions and better yet prevents more unwanted, abused little kids who'll grow up to inundate our prison system. Abortions are horrible, but worse is an unwanted child born behind the 8 ball. I've met many troubled adults whose problems can be traced back to a rotten childhood semi-sorta conducted by a parent or parents who never really gave a damn about the kids they put on this earth.

I'm also fully in favor of the free distribution of the RU468 abortion pill. It would end the parade of protesters at the few abortion clinics we have. Safe is better than sorry parents who can't afford nor have the desire to do the hard work of parenting for the next X number of years. Anything is better than an unwanted child....anything.

This, of course, is the same Republican Party that is calling for a smaller government and less intrusion in the lives of America. I guess with their ability to hold two totally conflicting views as both true works in the strange mind of today's Tea Pot brain Republican. Maybe, instead of analyzing the brain of the Newtown shooter, we need to analyze where the Republican brain went bonkers and where on the evolutionary chain did that show up? It wasn't from the Great Apes since they are smarter than that so it must go back further.

What I have never understood is why the religionists don't understand that having laws that restrict/outlaw abortion sets precedent clearing the way for the government to mandate abortion in the future. If the government can tell me I can't have an abortion it can also tell me that I have to have an abortion.

Every Republican who dislikes being called a member of a right-wing Taliban sect needs to look at the differences of what they believe from what Taliban Islam believe about teh role of women, even including a heavy reliance on the Old Testament, in a New Testament Christianity world.

Folks, there isn't that much difference in the way you treat your women family members! You can't be a 1st world country if your treat 51% of your population like they are in a 3rd world country. You are wasting over 51% of the brainpower (in many families, 90% of the brainpower) and you need to get your Bible, that book with the dust on it off the table, and read about how important women were in Jesus' ministry. Only modern day cults have demoted the importance of women in the church (and I include the current Pope in this condemnation)!
