Being an active United Methodist, living in Benton County - I was intrigued by the Rev. T Nicholas Evans in Bentonville starting a petition on MoveOn.org. I cannot find a listing for a person of that name (or combination of initials with the last name Evans) in Benton County - nor can I find a listing on the Arkansas United Methodist website for UM pastor of that name in the state. Unless he is from another conference (ie out of state) or has been retired for a VERY long time - I find this a bit - hmmmm - unusual? I've checked with some of my pastor and retired pastor buddies - and nobody else has heard of him either.

I have been known to sign MoveOn.org petitions if I agree with the stand on the issue - but this one just feels a bit off. Can't prove it - just sharing what I have (or haven't) found.

Funny, how those who preach as verla and yellow do, make such blanket assumptions about motivations in other people. Particularly when those assumptions are ridiculously wrong.

Gyl has been one of the most consistently sensible and rational folks on ay of these discussions. Neither I not Gyl have EVER advocated for abortion restrictions. Maybe you are hung up on your own cliff notes version of history, the one where you do NOT listen to what another say, and instead, make idiotic assumptions.

Yell, I conceal so the delicate flowers like some here don't wet their pants when they see an armed person. Also, it gives me the edge if someone decides to try and harm me. Fear? You must be kidding! I have no fear, I am prepared.

As far as the leech comment, I was pretty direct about it, and yet you found a way to twist it. Those teachers were very brave, and they did not, like the craven writer in Outliar's post, CHOOSE to become victims. In point of fact, there are many teachers in many states now taking advantage of the new laws to arm themselves so they have a clear choice of being better defenders of their students. Kudos to them.

As far as your rhetorical question, my experience has shown that most folks, when faced with armed reaction run away. Four times I have had a barrel pointed at someone in defense of myself, and four times the perps fled without me ever having to pull the trigger. I like it like that. The shooter at Clackamas stopped short because he was faced with a man with a carry permit who confronted him. The armed citizen didn't have to shoot, and the perp did everyone a favor by offing himself.

What motivates me? Life and love, and those things make me look at the consequences of doing or not doing the just thing. Gyl made some excellent points on govt oppression. Funny how govt oppression is fixed by govt liberation. Kinda the double edge sword. The entity you trust because it can be so beneficial can also be the one pumping gas into your home before setting fire to it. Govt only made the change in direction when other individual citizens chose to stand up to the abuses. They fought back, they inspired others to fight, resist, make changes.

I have compassion for you, Verla. Your a nice person who is misinformed, stubbornly, in many matters. Not sure what exactly motivates you, but that really isn't important to us, only to you.

Gylippus, mobs are not an arm of the government and it was government that finally stopped the lynchings, along with a huge number of regular citizens paying attention, doing the right thing, and demanding change. There were guns at Central High-carried by the National Guard. I remember Ruby Ridge and Waco. I get your point about oppressive government and abuse of powers. I really do. But people armed with assault weapons or even concealed carry permits will not stop injustice. (I don't necessarily think injustice is present when people who imprison others and hoard weapons are dealt with by the government.) Informed citizens who ask, read, advocate, participate, and monitor, along with a free press to shine the light will. The imprisonment of Japanese Americans was a travesty. A horrible dark chapter in our history from which we have hopefully learned--bigotry, fear, and ignorance have no place in our country. Take Verla's advice, look inside, find your motivation. Maybe you'll find a path to life with less fear and anger.

Blade--StevenE--Gyl... We love to find fresh ideas on these pages, but you are reinventing the wheel. Either you haven't been around long enough, or you are hung up on the Texas-textbook versions of history. You fear losing your guns through restrictive legislation but want Amendments to the Constitution to limit women's reproductive rights. Do you see a conflict there? Take five minutes to read the Preamble, Constitution and Amendments--if you need more time, enroll in a speed-reading class, it is short. It's a document meant to be copied and distributed by hand--no computers then, few printing presses. I don't know who has been holding you down, but you need to look at the real world, the world where people are born, live, work and die, people with feelings. Even those who are misinformed need compassion. Develop some. See the unwanted children--nothing is more heartbreaking. See children whose parents cannot, or will not provide for them. See how drugs and alcohol can ruin lives. How abuse can make some stronger and others seek retaliation. What motivates you?

Z....it was nice to meet you and our pleasure to help out in a small way yesterday.

Your wife did the right thing. Food placed outside in these cold temps will last much longer than inside a refrigerator or freezer that is growing warmer with no power. We have done that several times during winter power loss and it worked perfectly, except for the eggs freezing.

And it is wonderful news that so many of our blog family have their power restored. However, it is equally as sad that many still don't, and you are the ones in my heart as this drags on. It is so easy to feel the frustration in Sweathog 501's comment, I know we would all feel the same (or worse) should it be us in his situation.

We can't lose sight of the fact that the workers are doing the best they can, out there in horrible conditions trying to restore the power. They are not to blame. They are sent where they are told to go and have no control over which areas still remain dark. Those choices are made much higher up by people you don't see out on the streets in the cold.

I thought of the many people without power as I looked at the rows of giant energy trucks (NOT ENTERGY, but from other companies) sitting, unmanned, taking up parking spaces behind the mall yesterday. The mall had plenty of power so they weren't there for that reason. The only logical explanation was that those workers were off duty and the out of town trucks had to park somewhere. But the sight of all of those trucks just sitting probably hit a sour note for people who had cold children and no way to heat their homes.

One lady working in Dillards told me she has spoken with several families who had come to spend the day at the mall just to get warm.

I hope today will be the day to return to normal for everyone!

Do you think 9 amendments in the BoR were written towards individuals and 1 specific one was towards groups?
Posted by joeburris<<

Oh boy, Joe. Those first ten were directed at government. They are restrictions on government. As we saw in "freedom of speech" argument in Citizens United v. Hillary YES, the 1st Amendment is directed toward groups, namely corporations which are groups of "persons."

And your leading gun-nut Justice, Scalia, has freely acknowledged that some restrictions are acceptable and necessary otherwise you would be traipsing to Walmart to get a .50 cal fully automatic weapon. So yes, it is "INFRINGED" and will remain "infringed" in the purest sense of the term.

Here, let a previous Republican Chief Justice explain to you the meaning of "militia:"

http://www.guncite.com/burger.html

"In the 1789 debate in Congress on James Madison's proposed Bill of Rights, Elbridge Gerry argued that a state militia was necessary:

"to prevent the establishment of a standing army, the bane of liberty ... Whenever governments mean to invade the rights and liberties of the people, they always attempt to destroy the militia in order to raise an army upon their ruins."

We see that the need for a state militia was the predicate of the "right" guaranteed; in short, it was declared "necessary" in order to have a state military force to protect the security of the state. That Second Amendment clause must be read as though the word "because" was the opening word of the guarantee. Today, of course, the "state militia" serves a very different purpose. A huge national defense establishment has taken over the role of the militia of 200 years ago. .....

---------------------------------------------------------------

"The Second Amendment "has been the subject of one of the greatest pieces of fraud, I repeat the word fraud,' on the American public," former chief justice Warren E. Burger said in a 1991 interview on PBS's "MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour." Burger has said often that the "right to bear arms" belongs to the states, and he has attacked the NRA for fostering the opposite view.
Could someone please tell me why Entergy has it in for Echo Valley? EVERY time a twig falls we lose electricity. In the event of a major storm such as now, they have a sterling record ensuring we are absolutely the LAST to have power restored. We don't mind waiting our turn, but dammit, after 15 years we're getting a bit pissed. I took the hint after 2000 and had a generator profesionally installed with transfer switches and the whole nine yards. But after over 100 hours of almost continuous operation in this boondoggle alone, Im wondering how much longer it can perform, tough as it may be. Lights are on all around us and have been for some time, but as always our Entergy friends want to make certain power is restored here absolutely last. I have the highest regard and admiration for the brave souls who are going in harm's way to restore power as quickly and as safely as possible. However I do not understand the "Gilligan's Island" attitude from Entergy management when it comes to this area. When debachles happen in the military, usually the people in command get the short haircut first. Not by your chinny-chin-chin here. I'm sure the idiot CEO and his cronies will get a fat bonus for the great job they did while the ones of us all over the service area who didn't get service back in a reasonable time will be charged extra so he can get another big bonus and the poor stockholders don't surrer too badly. How the greedy bastards sleep at night i'll never know. Oh. And how about the unfortunate folks in Parris Towers and other such housing where Entergy did ABSOLUTELY nothing? But bigod, they got power back up right away in Helena and Marion. Guess they have more high rise housing for poor and elderly down in those parts. Kudos to the Entergy crews, as you're doing your best. A POX on you "analysists" and executives! Don't even get me started on the "Act of God" bullshit. You should have been better prepared!

You know the only reason we have that law is to receive federal money, is tax payer dollars. Seat belts in cars are just that a belt. A restraint is a 3, 4,5 point harness. But those are to uncomfortable. You don't wear a belt repelling, you wear a safey harness. I chose not to wear my belt, it restricts my movement, and does nothing for safety. I wear a 4 point harness.
Close. Pro choice folks go completely off the deep end at the slightest suggestion of restricting access to anything uterus related because they fear a slippery slope. First women have to explicitly pay for their own pills and then before you can turn around all women are barefoot, pregnant, and chained to the kitchen sink. There's lots of similar stuff when it comes to guns. First large magazines are banned, and before you know it, the BATF is shooting your kids and driving a tank through your house.

I don't follow Gylippus. Lots of responsible, dedicated, loving parents still believe and support the law of the land which allows a woman to terminate a pregnancy and openly advocate for the continuation of such rights. I'm not asking people to give up their guns. Neither is Judge Griffen. Restricting access to birth control and restricting access to assault weapons are different issues entirely. Responsible should gun owners should demand more safety and responsibility from other gun owners. Just as responsible parents look out for other parents and children.

Unless you're trying to argue that pro-choice folks get all nutty and irrational and call names when talk of restricting abortion comes up? I don't run with that crowd so I just can't understand the nation's obsession with my uterus and medical choices.....which as far I can tell have absolutely zero bearing on anyone else's health and safety.

However, should the fruit of my loin need mental health care that I couldn't afford, we'd have a different topic to discuss, most especially if I had a freakish devotion to assault weapons. I sure hope you're always fit enough and aware to keep your lovely gun out of the hands of any otherwise unarmed criminals.
