Anyone read Mike Masterson'as masterpiece on Newtown the other day on how these things just happen in such a society as ours. My first reaction was to write another Voices letter asking him to identify the schools where he had friends with kids because another one would just be a statistical abberation and not significant in the overall size of the country UNLESS IT IS YOUR KID. Same with a plane crash killing 400-well that's only 0.0001% of all the people that flew that week so it is statistically insignificant and doesn't negate the fact that flying is safer than walking across an open field in a thunderstorm.

I actually thought I had read a sane column of his lately but I guess two in a row is imporssible.

one very simple thing that keeps getting looked over. The weapon, whatever it may be is simply a tool. The tool requires human input. You can't fault the tool, when the person made a decision that can't be Undone. children are weak these days, which is the parents fault. Kids can be taught to over come fear, and kick it in the nads

Students of history remember that Russian children picked up bolt action rifles and defended their country. where these children scared? you betcha! but they overcame fear and faced it.

Tyranny can only be allowed to go on for so long.

We can insult each other in a way not to offend gentler souls and impressionable children, and many do. Now the only question is would requiring a photo ID to post on this site supress some. If it would, I'd lobby for the legislation.

I could not agree more, Jim. I remember reading about a bunch of survivalist yahoos who had moved near a small town in Michigan or Minnesota in anticipation of a Y2K catastrophe. Their leader said they were prepared to blow up bridges if necessary to keep the government from coming after them. I thought to myself, you ignorant, deluded fool. The government won't be crossing bridges to get you---they'll be lobbing artillery at you from 5000 yards away.

All these comments about needing bushmaster-type assault weapons to fight the U.S. government reminds me of a comment that the late former Governor Earl Long, the Earl of Louisiana, told rabid segregationist rabble-rouser Leander Perez back in the 1960s when he was threatening all kinds of violence against the federal government. "Leander," Earl said, "you can't fight the federal government and win; it has the atomic bomb."

Earl Long was committed to a mental hospital briefly by his wife when she found out that he was running around on her with the stripper, Blaze Starr. After the psychiatrists found him mentally fit and released him, he used the episode in his campaign for re-election, claiming that he was the only candidate in the race that had "papers to prove he wasn't crazy."

Such was Louisiana politics. Max could tell us all about it, but Earl Long was probably the first moderate on racial issues to run for and hold office in Louisiana, taking a 180-degree turn from his older brother, Huey P. Long. A.J. Leibling, the New Yorker magazine journalist, wrote a real fine book about him called, appropriately enough, "The Earl of Louisiana."

      Thanks, Ozarko
Citizen 1--did you mean Conway County and Sheriff Hawkins? He was long retired when I met him, but the Democratic women all loved him, and half our club in Faulkner County was non-white. My 2-year-old grand daughter sat on his lap for over an hour. As for voter fraud, in Faulkner County, at his "roast", Jake Sims said, "...(a candidate)... came to the courthouse and asked how the vote was going, and I asked him, how many do you need?" It was good fun, but it did leave me wondering. Now the honorable "Justice Jim", he lied to my face and I called him on it. His lackey jumped in and pushed me aside.
As for Biden, he puts these new Arkansas legislators to shame. The man actually understands simple math.
And Asa? I read his speech for the NRA twice. When I was making fruitcake this morning his face kept popping up.

An open question, one stated in another way on an earlier thread:

What would constitute a "well-regulated" militia?

Those who claim to protecting 2nd Amendment rights would define that as "no" regulations at all. It seems to me that the exact wording of the 2nd Amendment assumes that firearms will indeed be regulated. The debate shouldn't be about WHETHER firearms are regulated or not, but exactly HOW they will be regulated.

Why not require similar requirements to motor vehicles? Why would anyone have a problem with that? Training, testing, screening, licensing, registration, insurance. Wendell Griffin's not the first one to think of that parallel.

If you think that you need a firearm for personal protection, why would this be a problem?

If you want a firearm for hunting or other sporting use, why would this be a problem?

If you think you need a firearm to protect you from the government, you're simply being foolish. Even a Bushmaster AR-15's not going to be a protection from the military.

And I'm a gun owner.

1929 the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, approximately 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.
In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915-1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, 13 million Jews, gypsies, homosexuals, the mentally ill, and others, who were unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million "educated" people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
That places total victims who lost their lives because of gun control at approximately 56 million in the last century. A new filing in the King Lincoln Bronzeville v. Blackwell case includes a copy of the Ohio Secretary of State election production system configuration that was in use in Ohio's 2004 presidential election when there was a sudden and unexpected shift in votes for George W. Bush.

The filing also includes the revealing deposition of the late Michael Connell. Connell served as the IT guru for the Bush family and Karl Rove.
Even Hollywood can't get E-voting to work:

National | Oscar’s E-Voting Problems Worse Than Feared | Hollywood Reporter
Dec 28 2012
It looks like online Oscar voting is hitting a few snags, which some Academy members worry might depress voting participation to its lowest level in years. \ Voting to determine the next set of Oscar nominees began Dec. 17 and will extend through Jan. 3. On Dec. 26, I reached out to a wide cross-section of the Academy to see if they tried to vote online (an Academy spokesperson tells me that “a great majority” of members have registered to do so) and, if so, to characterize their experience. Roughly half of the members reached said they experienced problems navigating the site; more than one described it as a “disaster.” They also worried that hackers could compromise the Oscar vote. On Dec. 26, I also spoke with an Academy spokesperson who told me most complaints about e-voting have stemmed from members “forgetting or misusing passwords.”
Ummm Sound Policy, hate to break the bad news (I don't actually but am trying to be nice in response to your being an ass hole) but Boone County and several others used electronic poll books this past election cycle. There is a proposal to provide them for all counties but the $500K price tag is the show stopper. Individual counties can purchase them, many have, some plan to including mine. Don't take my word for it, call the Arkansas County Election Commissions Association or State Board of Election Commissioners and ask them. I know for a fact the iVotronics voting machine cannot be programmed to produce fraudulent results because ES&S trained me on their equipment at their Omaha plant. It is the Diebold equipment that was hacked. This past election I intentionally tried to incorrectly calibrate an iVo to register a vote for one candidate when another was selected but could not do it, neither could our technicians. Yet, after each election we hear allegations from losing candidates that's what occurred. But let's take it one step further. Arkansas Law requires public Logic & Accuracy Testing and that is EVERY candidate's opportunity to ensure votes are registered for the candidate voted for. They can also check the ballot and I encourage all to even listen to the ADA iVo audio ballot because believe me, they can get that one wrong. L&A produces two results, one printed and one on the PEB (personal electronic ballot). The PEB results are loaded into ERM (Election Reporting Manager) to verify the electronic report matches the vote cast and the printed iVo tape. All are filed for future reference if needed and that is the first thing I ask for when serving as an expert witness for a law suit. To cut you a little slack, you are correct in that every voter is required to produce ID when they register, or, if not produced then the first time they vote. And, I didn't mention it becuase most understand that is a "given." However Arkansas Law DOES require every poll worker to ask for ID EVERY time (A.C.A. 7-5-305(a)(8)(A). Moving right along to your one fraudulent vote theory. How many local elections in Arkansas were recently determined by ten votes or less? Let's see, the Crittenden County D-54 Dumbocrat Primary Run-off, a Mississippi County Luxor Alderman seat, several Helena area alderman seats a couple of elections ago, the Mayor of Redfield by one vote and the list goes on and on. Obviously not national or even state-wide races but all politics are local and it is the local races that are usually targeted.
Sky Pilot, to use a phrase from Max, I call BS to your claim of programming a VOTING computer. You cannot program an iVotronic with a "if-then" command. You could probably program an Election Commission computer that contains the ERM Program with it IF you had access to it. However, once again there is the L&A vs ERM test and the after-the-fact audit of the iVo results tape to the printed ERM report (if the county election commission is doing their job). Sorry to say not all 75 election commissions do and many defer to their county clerk to conduct elections for them.
The primary cause of election fraud in Arkansas is through absentee ballots, followed by those permitted to assist up to six voters per election, followed by a few who vote early on the last day, then vote on Election Day because the printed poll book has already been printed and dispatched to the polling place. Technically these people should be caught during the review but frequently are not. And, if they are, county prosecutors have bigger cases to pursue and nothing happens.
I am still waiting for someone to explain to me how having to show ID is going to discourage qualified voters. Are you suggesting those inclinced to vote for Dumbocrats are shy, unedumicated, have something to hide or otherwise have a reason for not voting if they have to show ID. Seriously, please help me understand how requiring ID will discourage voting. I have had to show an ID card since age 17 to shop, obtain medical treatment, board an aircraft, sometimes buy a drink, cash a check for sure, and lately pass through TSA (i.e., thousands standing around), ride the ship island ferry and get a library card. What is the big flippin deal?
