eLwood...somehere in there you must have been making a point..Maybe you should put the "kid" down and clarify your remarks..

Assuming you believe the Founders intended for one generation to tax and spend away the future of the next generation or to destroy the greatest nation in history just so you and I can fatten at the expense of our kids, I would say that you and I are profoundly locked in a disagreement which will be extremely difficult to negotiate ...

The solution will most likely come in a series of elections in which the electorate will chose either the easy path of tax-spend and borrow at the expense of our kids..or..fiscal discipline based in the examples of our heritage...

Sadly, at the moment, the momentum is with your view..spend and borrow at the expense of our children.

      >> Social Security is going bankrupt. That is a fact. DO YOU WANT TO DO NOTHING AND LET IT GO BANKRUPT?

I would like to see you prove that assertion, which you can't. An opinion piece from a rightwing source is not "evidence."

Also, the rules of decency and honesty require that you NOT use a Congressional report that is skewed by a formula designed by Eric Cantor or Paul Ryan wherein they tell the Budget folks to make one variable a constant and then calculate the outcome of Soc Security based upon an undisclosed formula change. Tsk, tsk. None of that foolishness without full disclosure.

Also, don't be confusing the present value of a future stream of payments with how many funds the S.S. Trust fund will actually hold at a future date.
OZARKRAZO...Thanks for reminding me that we live in a democracy and that we recently had an "election"...You may have voted without noticing the "ELECTION" choices for the House of Representatives..

The 112th Congress (with its 38-vote "elected" majority) having finished its work (poorly)...and now, the 113th Congress with its "ELECTED" 33-vote Republican majority will assume the "POWER OF THE PURSE" tomorrow...unlike in President Obama's first term when he controlled both houses of the Congress..

In this link, I would urge you to pay close attention to Article 1..Section 8 (Power of The Purse)..Thankfully, the Founders placed this duty in the House of Representatives, not the Executive Branch nor the Senate..

Yes...we had an election...and a 33-vote Republican majority was returned to the House..Glad you noticed..I think...
It wasn't an election in a democracy... it was an auction in a republic. Aside from that, your leadership wants nothing more than to agree with or push those darn republicans further to the right.

We live under a constitution which was never allowed a democratic vote by the people. We live under "leadership" such as the president which certainly garnered nothing close the 50 percent plus one vote of the electorate. Just those who showed up. Allow a none of the above vote/start over, and a multi-party proportional representation system, abolishing the US Senate, and establishing a non auction electoral system and we might begin to be able to call what we have a democracy.

Poor Max, applying the term "extremists" in referencing Congressman Cantor and others who simply keep their word to their constituents who've demanded that America stop sacrificing our children's future at the alter of burgeoning government...Max knows, and his "LIBERAL" (no name calling here) Democrat sisters know as well as the rest of us that we simply cannot continue spending more than we take in..and he knows that all business (small and large) simply pass tax increases to their consumers (that's us, MAX) who are middle class and poor...

Of course, the poor receive help from the rest of us, and that is a good and necessary thing..but the middle class has no place to hide..We pay to the business who is forced to collect the new tax in the form of higher prices which they must pass to Max's duplicitous pals in the government..Then, they waste it on more spending to buy votes to keep themselves in power...

Fortunately, Rick Crawford and Tim Griffin have decided to exercise leadership at a time when Congress is NOT abundantly blessed with it..and when our country desperately needs a grand dose of it...

These men are not extremists...we need more men and women like them in the Congress..

Besides, even the most stable middle-class families carry some debt, right? House mortgage, loan on a car, maybe some education loans, credit cards, etc.
The only time the Teathughlicans scream about the debt is when the Democrats are in office.

And all that's assuming we managed to achieve independence from Great Britain.

Tying the supply of money to the amount of a metal you can dig out of the ground is the dumbest idea ever. Why not tie it to the number of stars you can count, or the number of children born, or the number of miles in the US interstate highway system?

Jason - taxes do not fund the federal government. this is just fact. to think fed gov't does or should treat their finances like a household budget is to simply not understanding the system. All parties are lying to you... which is why it's so difficult to grasp... but it is the big lie.

There are a lot of FUBAR ways the gov't runs the money system.... for the rich banksters. But you are playing their game for them by asking us all to live a lie, like paupers, under a strict gold standard. We don't, and we shouldn't, imo.

You want to save money? Great, me too! Nationalize banks. Establish health care as a human right with medicare for all and cut defense 90 percent, which would still keep our defense budget (with a massive arsenal at hand) more than Russia and China combined.

It seems to me the federal government is already too big, and it is not something that needs more growth via taxation. You say these guys are extreme, but what is extreme to me is how the government does not currently operate under budget guidelines, and then spends more than 100% of what they receive year after year. Then, like an irresponsible college student, they have the nerve to keep asking daddy for more money after maxing out all of their credit cards. BALANCE YOUR BUDGET. LIVE UNDER THAT BUDGET. UNTIL THEN, STOP ASKING HARD-WORKING PEOPLE FOR MORE MONEY. You and I cannot operate a home or business in this extreme manner. So NO, I do not want to support extreme carelessness. I do not want to support extreme reckless spending. The press has been complicit in helping to divide the nation, and gives free passes to those wanting to further our nation's debt problems, and in trying to make those with common sense solutions appear strange, mean, out of touch, and generally extreme. This is disappointing. Ask tough questions from those in the government, and encourage the government to act responsibly for the sake of this nation, and its future, please.

Social Security is not going bankrupt. There are credible projected shortages in the 2030's in the midst of a massive baby boom generations retirement which can be handled many ways - raising minimum wages to living wage again, employing tens of millions of people in want/need of a job, eliminating the 110k income cap. And dawg forbid, if real trouble happens.... we can do what we did for banksters..... create money out of thin air. For victims rather than the thieves.

Privitization will most certainly usher the fund into more trouble, not less (see what's happened to private pensions for decades running). Needless and exorbitant fees alone make privitization ridiculous. The last thing this country should do is put any trust, any monies in the very hands of the fire sector which just about blew up the world finance system with ponzi schemes, cds, cdo's, derivatives and the like. Those criminals should be bankrupt and in jail.

And I also agree with what (I assume) Eureka would say - a pox on both your houses! I have said many times on this blog that I agree with you, "Couldn't be better," concerning our stupid defense spending overseas that protects Japan and Germany when they are wealthy countries that should be protecting themselves. How much would that save to bring home those 80,000 soldiers (number may be higher) from Asia and Europe?

Did you know that the fiscal cliff budget cuts were only going to take 10% out of the military. We could go much deeper. Now lets to turn to subjects where we differ. Social Security is going bankrupt. That is a fact. DO YOU WANT TO DO NOTHING AND LET IT GO BANKRUPT? How do you give hope to those entering the workforce now? They are giving 13% of their income for what? It will be bankrupt once they retire. IS THERE ANY WAY YOU CAN DENY THAT FACT?

30 other countries have allowed at least part of the income to be privatized!!!! This has been met with great excitement in those countries and that is what we need to do too.

Now concerning the fiscal cliff. I personally contacted over 40 congressman and it seems that everyone of them voted against this latest deal. 41 dollars in tax increases to every one dollar in budget cuts is not what we needed.
Well, Saline, cut Defense by 50% total. Then we can start to negotioate how much further down it should go. We aren't the world's policeman and if the oil copmpanies want security for their tankers, let them pay for it. And get Social Security off the table totally unless you are going to include all income, not just wages. SS had nothing to do with Congressional spending and it includes 3 Republican presidents where a remarkable group of loud mouths now seemed to be very happy to borrow money from China. Same on Medicare until all income is covered.

And quit making every thing a "cliff". They had 18 months to do something and yet the House spent more time away from Washington (maybe a good thing based on the moral policemen they were when there) then working for the American people. Why does the House seem to spend all theeir time working AGAINST the bulk of the American people?

You would think that the Republicans who talk so much of cutting spending would try to get a plan that cuts spending 3 to 1 over tax increases at least. Instead, they go for a plan that raises taxes 41 to 1 over spending cuts. The government is spending 42% of our GDP while in socialist Europe most countries are at 48%. Soon we will be where they are and probably will looking at the same fate as Greece. Our problem is spending. Over and over you hear Republicans say that but they do nothing about it. At least Rick Crawford and Tim Griffin from Arkansas voted against the plan Obama laid out. The only good thing about this deal is that it did not raise the debt ceiling. We will soon another fight over that.

During the month of December I contacted our three Republican Congressman and our one Republican Senator several times concerning this fiscal cliff deal that was coming down the pike and the debt ceiling debate. At least two of them stepped up and voted against this deal.
