Blues--what is exempt? In the 50's, companies that did less that a million dollars in sales within a state--example, five and dime stores. Thus, counter clerks were paid 25 cents per hour, worked six days a week, and received no overtime. Newberry's was a big company, but they formed different corporations for their stores, so that they would not make more than that million. As an assistant manager in Grand Forks in 1950, Bill earned $2000. He did not punch a time clock, but worked over 80 hours per week. The store was only open two nights, but other nights he reworked displays until eleven. On Sundays, he made 3 trips to the store--to put down the awning, to raise the awning, and finally to turn the coffee pot back on so it was ready at 7 a.m. We wouldn't want to leave that water hot all weekend, would we?

I've always wondered where starting wages would end up if there were no dictated minimum. The minimum requirement is actually debasing and it gives the employer an out for low wages - it's like saying "here little unskilled worker, that's all you get". Let the free market dictate what workers are "worth". With the dictated minimum, all the entry level jobs are interchangeable and it makes the workers interchangeable without the ability to differentiate pay for better workers - because employers don't have to, it all pays the same.

Not paying someone a wage that at a minimum keeps up with basic cost of living expenses is selfish ignorance.

The proper manner to keep the cost of services and products down is not by paying its workers. If its by better efficiency, then I understand the private sector is hands down the best at doing that.

Personally, I want someone who works at a restaraunt to be earning more than minimum wage - especially when it comes to handling my food or even Steven E's food.

People forget that wage is an expecnse for companies as well as income for the worker. There is a abalance, and while most people will slit their child's throat rather than admit it, people have a monetary value.

You have a value, and minimum wage inflates that value for a lot of people. The people it hurts the most are the people it was supposed to help. I hope it does NOT pass in Arkansas. It would be nice for a little sanity to win out, nistead of the bleating of people begging for a free ride or hand out for something they haven't earned.

If the 1949 minimum--1 dollar, but many exemptions--had been indexed, it would be a liveable wage today. Sadly, only federal workers get that type of indexing. Bill went to Walmart for the Miracle Maid juice special both today and yesterday--2 bottles fresh juice for 4.98. The employees were clueless about the special on Bowman. At West Chenal they drug out some twin packs of Simply Orange. It rang at $3.00. Too little, Bill said. The checker looked at him as if he was crazy. Minimum wage workers have no loyalty, and require a lot of training--both expensive. After protesting a second time, Bill bought the juice, but felt like he was stealing it. Does the current Walmart brass understand their customer? Or their employees? Do they care? Or is it all in the bottom line and the size of their stock options? Are we back in a fuedal age?

If there's any way to vote for an increase in the minimum wage via a ballot measure, I think that's the way to go. Most Americans want to see the minimum wage raised:http%3a//www.thenation.com/blog/171284/americans-want-raise-minimum-wage

Raising the minimum wage would have the following benefits for hard working Arkansans: an additional $40.00/week for fuel, putting food on the table, less dependence on food stamps. It will help small businesses like restuarants because more folks would have extra dollars to eat out, and it is a living wage for most single people here in Arkansas, which would help recent college grads.

But not for restaurant and hotel employees. You will NEVER see any Congress critter pay for a meal or hotel room. That's a small price to pay for keeping hotel-restaurant owners free from min wage laws.

The scam of "letting" a college student work for free to gain experience, at the same time the college student is racking up college loan debt is immoral.

Before minimum wage I recall the story of one Ark farmer who worked a teen boy hard during the hay harvest. When harvest ended and the boy wanted his pay the farmer told him his pay was the experience he had gained.

That should satisfy the likes of Gyl.

I'm sure the bosses at Walmart would participate with high schools across the nation and offer wage-free experience opportunities to youths who aren't doing very well in school.

Free Beer Tomorrow for the first blogger to put a good name on such a walmart program.

Yeah, wish you could use a font twice as big to type PRETAXES! And let us not forget how many minimum wage workers are not given a full 40 hour workweek.

The truth is a person can't independently live on minimum wage. Even with HUD, the money they'd have left after rent wouldn't keep the utilities on or allow a minimum wage worker to buy enough food to survive.

Part of this is OUR fault because we want to pay nothing for what we buy. We buy stuff for near nothing and never worry if the manufacturer is paying a decent wage to their employees. It's a vicious circle......jerk. We don't make much so we can't pay much so prices are kept low and workers nearly starve to death which means they can't buy much and what they buy they have to buy from Wal-Mart.....endless endless vicious circle.....jerk.

And now that the owners of corporate America have learned there ARE people on the planet that will work for 32 cents per hour we fixing to see EVERY job that can be done in a foreign country heading that way if they're not already there. Ditch digging will be done at home, but not much else. We're cheaping our way to a barren land of starving people hacking each other up for a chicken leg.

And when the Mongol hordes of starving Americans grow desperate enough to start climbing over the fences of the 1% looking for crumbs to eat, the 1% will run to their jets and fly away! After we clean out their kitchens we'll be forced to eat their pets and I already know I don't like poodle no matter how it's prepared.

Obama has to figure out in the next 4 years how to break this chain. The Profiteers must be willing to give up a little profit and we must be willing to pay a little more and our employers must be prepared to pay us a little more for a job well done. The big big ships must sit a little lower and our tiny boats have to rise or there will be trouble never imagined before in the minds of Americans.

We've been laughing at Russia for years now as we've turned into Russia ourselves. No one should be laughing now, not even billionaires. There should be a higher minimum wage and a lower maximum wage. Limit wealth to 1 billion dollars and we'll never hear from the Koch brothers again. Sure we may not get any more fancy museums and PBS will lose a lot of their corporate funding, but that's a small price to pay for every American going to bed in a warm house with their bellies full each and every night of the year.

The poor didn't cause this misery, the mega-rich did.....

Raise a kid or two at these rates and see if your employer is really pro-family.
