I wonder what the cost of secondary power generation is in comparison. In other words, what happens to those numbers when you figure in all the generators and fuel being purchased?

&&&&

I know two people who have purchased natural gas generators this year. That s*** ain't cheap and I can't afford one. Maybe all the transmission lines should be buried, so we can "spread the wealth around" and force other customers to pay for our uptime.

And yet I am okay with this. A hypocrite, I am.

“Cost-Effectiveness of Undergrounding Power Lines”
http://www.woodpoles.org/documents/MARA.pd…

Take away:
Cost per mile of single phase is $15k overhead vs. $25k underground
Cost per mile of 3 phase is $80k overhead vs. $160k underground
Cost per mile of 3 phase (extra-large) is $250k overhead vs. $1500 underground.
Service life is 30-50 years overhead vs. 30 underground;
underground reliability fades after 25 years.
Undergrounding the last span reduces outage times
but on the whole undergrounding is not economically justified.
I happily live in a subdivision where all power lines are buried in the ground. This was in the development plan. I don't have a clue as to the cost, but it was a selling point. It would be nice if it were possible to totally leave the wires out of it and be able to receive power without the complications and hazards of wires.

      I called Entergy back in the summer to cut down a dead tree I thought was in their easement. They sent someone to take a look and said it was not their responsibility. About 50 feet of that tree broke off during the storm and thankfully fell straight to the ground, causing no damage to any lines. The next time we might not be so lucky!

      I certainly can't speak for Entergy's ROW maintenance statewide, but West Tree Service was in my neighborhood, one of the hardest hit in Little Rock, doing its thing just a couple of weeks before the storm. It wasn't overgrown privet that brought down the poles and the lines in my neighborhood, it was ice and snow-laden crashing pines. A pine tree that is 50 feet away from the lines, but 60 feet tall, is an outage just waiting to happen. I don't know that property owners anywhere would tolerate a 150 foot wide deforestation of the right of way. Absent that, I'm not sure how the damage in Overlook, Cammack, Kingwood, Foxcroft and Leawood could have been avoided. We had already done the only things that we knew to do - (i) taken down all the pines in our yard; (ii) buried the power lines from the pole to our house; and (iii) installed a transfer switch for a portable generator. Christmas through New Year's Eve then became a marathon of trips to the nearest operating gas station with our empty gas canisters. And every single trip was worth it.
