From Wikipedia (The Free Encyclopedia): “Deinstitutionalisation (or deinstitutionalization) is the process of replacing long-stay psychiatric hospitals with less isolated community mental health services for those diagnosed with a mental disorder or developmental disability.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deinstitution…

While it is entertaining to observe conservatives’ attempts to shift blame to President Carter, the results of their attempts to destroy the “Great Society” are anything but amusing. If it is conservatives’ contention that America cannot afford the cost of deinstitutionalization that is one argument. But when conservatives’ show reluctance to fund government services for those in need let us not pretend that there is no correlation with the killing of innocents by those denied mental health care.
Of course someone like Lyins and Feinstein would pray for an Adam Lanza to come along and gun down some folks so they can push a disgraced agenda. Yes, Gene, lets go after the guns, again, and make sure nothing happens of any consequence, again, and disarm folks in areas where they need a means of defense.

Let's acknowledge a dark fact of life. Shit happens. Whether it is some storm wiping out half the eastern seaboard, or some deranged individual killing his mom, stealing her guns and going after kids. Yes, we need to address the problem of mental health in this country, but you don't do it by idiotic attempts at people's rights. You address the problem by acknowledging that there are people out there who need care, who need to be removed from society. A swing closer to sanity.

At one time mental health care was draconian. A man could institutionalize his wife for ANY reason. Now, we have a hard time creating a national database for those truly disturbed individuals who need to be recognized as dangers to society.

NB, The Deinstitutalionization Movement began in the Carter administration as an academic movement that spread to hospitals and relaxed the committment standards. Carter planned to build half way houses for them but the Great Society ran out of money and has been borrowing ever since to finance it. The US is currently borrowing 46% of its budget with no end in sight. Sooner or later it will all come crashing down. No doubt, you'll be looking for someone else to blame other than the people who demand ever higher government spending.

The stature of Gene Lyons? Lyons is a social democrat who wants to substitute government for the family. That's the same kind of person who in the depths of Weimar Republic hyper-inflation began to argue that Germany would be stronger if they had a strong leader, leading to the election of Adolph Hitler, WWII and the Holocaust! With a Second Great Depression on the horizon and knowing the Democratic Party's anti-white sentiments in this era I don't trust Lyons, you, them or Brown Shirt Gay Activists anymore than I'd trust psychiatry's ability to prevent the onset of schizophrenia! You guys may be scapegoating the wealthy and whites right now but that would change to the Jews just like happened in 1933 and could happen again after the US cannot borrow even one more dime and collapses into the Second Great Depression, and the liberals began to argue America would be stronger if we suspended the constitution, probably sometime in the next decade. No thanks, I'll keep my weapons!

At last, someone of Gene Lyons’ stature at the A-T addresses the physiological origins of mental illnesses and their oft-resulting tragedies, small and large, as in Adam Lanza’s case.

It was appalling to read so many commenters on the blog attribute Sandy Hook to “evil,” as if demons, religion, faith in God (or lack of it), or (yes) gay and lesbian equality played some significant role in Lanza’s deteriorating pathology since his birth or his instant at-home access to weapons.

The constant repetition of phrases like “evil” and “senseless killings” routinely tagged to these tragedies in the media cheapens the truth of the confluence of genetics, social vectors such as (lack of readily available and affordable) mental health care, the proliferation of guns, the worship of macho violence as sport and entertainment, and the selling of Faith as a solution to anything.

They make all too much sense when the facts are acknowledged.

Much easier and more comfortable to assign these inevitable slaughters to “evil,” thus dismissing their shared societal responsibility by the majority of “good” people.

Just today, in fact, Salon published yet another scientific article on the link between genetics, brain changes at birth, and autism, Asperger’s, schizophrenia and alzheimer’s disease.

Illness (mental, physical, societal) has nothing to do with gods and demons or gays and lesbians.

http://www.salon.com/2013/01/03/study_alzh…

Certainly, the origins of today’s mental health crisis in the United States may be traced to President Reagan’s (and the GOP’s) assault of President Carter’s Mental Health Systems Act of 1980.

http://www.miwatch.org/2011/02/_ronald_rea…

The damages of President Reagan and the GOP to America (financially and in every other way) are ongoing and all too evident.

Ironic, then, that the followers of that party and their subsequent Presidents and Congresspeople are those most likely to blame Superstition and Satan and to lobby for escalating sales of Take-Another-Pill pharmaceuticals and Buy-More-Weapons “self-protection” instead of addressing the causes of these tragedies through sociology, medical science and sane political leadership.
