KLRT brought new news unlike the other guys. Their anchors & reporters like their job & each other, not phony like some others in LR. Maybe some of the staff will be retained by Ch.4 if 16 does away with the news. I know 4stations in a market like LR might be too many but their news is much better than the others.

Newspapers nationwide are declining and that's a trend I'm not happy about because of that media's ability to do "long form" reporting. But WEHCO and Stephens Media which dominate print in AR have decided that hard paywalls are their future and that is driving away those that might subscribe (unlike the NYT and (cough) Gannett "soft" paywalls. TV is a visual media and especially local TV is all about shootings, fires, Razorback flatulence watches, cute bottle blonde female anchors under 40, and as mentioned previously stories friendly to the Chambers of Commerce. But TV IMHO has already reached its zenith (no pun intended), in being a primary media, much the same as radio was supplanted by TV years ago. Many radio stations which once employed full news departments have now resorted to outsourcing local news (even severe weather coverage) to local TV broadcasters.

As bad is the situation will be in Little Rock which will revert to only 3 TV newsrooms, the situation could be that of Springfield MO which because of media consolidation has only two newsrooms: Schulz (KYTV/KSPR) and Nexstar-Mission (KOLR/KOZL). Even worse, an affiliation dispute between Nexstar (KOZL) and FOX Broadcasting resulted in that network dropping KOZL as a local affiliate and FOX going to a glorified low power rimshot station (KRBK) unavailable OTA in the southern part that market (Branson and Northern AR).

Any reduction in the number of monkeys/typewriters theoretically diminishes us all, but seriously, folks -- local tv news is just weather, sports, advertorial and self-congratulation. I can't even watch ABC national news because of Diane Sawyer's bottomless reserve of treacle. Maybe every now and then some low-paid wannabe chases a lead found in the morning paper or on this blog, otherwise it's city hall press releases and chamber of commerce tips. But tv has the raw audience numbers that advertisers have to have.

I'm worried about what happens when old the old newspaper guys with much institutional knowledge and many contacts are gone. Name me 10 people under 30 who know anything about real Arkansas news. Or care. Or will be here, committing journalism, for 20 years.

Marcy, things will likely get worse with digital OTA TV when the FCC's plan to "repack" the TV frequencies again (and require broadcasters to vacate more spectrum). Actual RF channels (NOT virtual) 52-69 were reclaimed as part of the need for 700MHz public safety communications and also increased demand for "wireless" services (ie cellphones). Many experts are predicting channels (RF not virtual channels) 36-51 will be on the chopping block. KASN and KARZ currently occupy RF channels 39 and 44 respectively.

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13578_3-57522584…

As for reception issues, they can often be because of the multipath in the metro of Little Rock. I attempted using rabbit ears for *analog* tv in an apartment when I lived in metro Little Rock a decade ago (pre-DTV for me), and finally got a limited basic sub from Comcast. I'm currently out in the fringe in a rural area w/o CC&R's and have a overbuilt antenna system. Currently receive all the LR full power stations, plus AETN and KTVE (NBC/FOX) from El Dorado---that is when the rotor is turned.

Perhaps they should look into making their digital signal stronger while they're consolidating their operations. Some of them are darned hard to watch with all the 'no signal' messages and pixelations interrupting the show.
