The Banh Mi at The Root is great, I can't remember if I ever broke away from it to try the burger. Haven't been in a long time, though, since I can only get over there on Saturdays, and HAM is in walking distance of my apartment.

I've never been able to go the smoothie route when trying to eat light. I like them and they taste good but my brain or body doesn't register the 400-500 calories I just sucked through a straw as a meal. I will, no doubt, be hungry soon. I worked for years at a smoothie place and found some really great combos but fortunately still had a youthful metabolism that allowed me to drink my calories as I ate my pizza or bagel or cheese steak.

At home I like to make soup. A brothy soup with sausage, beans, ham or shredded rotisserie chicken is great this time of the year. My biggest challenge to eating light at home is when winter rolls in you just want something warm and comforting from the oven like stuffed shells. Soup helps me get my comfort fix.

Excellent suggestions thus far. I have a difficult time avoiding the burger at The Root, which is why I've never sampled the other items you've listed.

Never been to 4 Square, but sounds like I need to remedy that soon. Nice tip on TSC, we go there often. They are always very accomodating and my son loves the place.

Great list of places, although I also noticed you missed 4square. The chickpea wrap is my favorite there. They also have a juicer, and will make you a delicious fresh drink of apples, beets, carrots, etc.

I rarely go to Tropical Smoothie Cafe given that 4sq is right across the street. But, when I do they're happy to make their smoothies without the sugar if you ask. Trust me, they are plenty sweet with just the natural fruits that go in them.

My best bet for breakfast is the granola and blueberries at Red Door. They make granola so tasty that I don't miss the eggs and biscuits and bacon... okay, maybe a little. But, I love going out for breakfast and that's the only way I can justify it on a regular basis.

And how about the Root Cafe? They have some good meat alternatives, like the Banh Mi sandwich and the tofu scramble. I often ask for a side of sauteed kale -- not on the menu, but if they have it and aren't swamped they'll usually make it for me.

For yummiest healthy kids menu, I would vote for Lilly's Dim Sum.

The Root has a really tasty portabello mushroom burger.

Today's lunch was a Vegan Hummus sandwich with a cup of califlower soup at Boulevard. Good stuff, even to this carnivore!

Tropical Smoothie? I always felt as if their smoothies weren't as sugar-filled as Planet Smoothie's. Both chains have great smoothies.

4square cafe downtown has an all vegetarian menu if memory serves me correct. Eating less meat is great for your health.

This is what came to mind as I'm hungry at my desk considering lunch. I'm trying to eat lighter lately to counter the December indulgences.

The seasonal salad at The Pantry. No matter the season I know it is going to be a good salad. If I feel extra hungry I'll add salmon. Bonus points for the terrific homemade bread that comes with it.

Baja Shrimp salad at Zaza (although they have changed their shrimp in the past year. They are smaller now.)

Shrimp Ka-bobs, make it Snappy, extra veggies at Flying Fish

A salad at Local Lime (forget the name) that has salmon on it and that is really good. I also like that the guacamole has the option of ordering jicama and cucumbers as dippers.

Thai Chop Salad at Big Orange (I've only ordered a burger there once, that's how much I like the salad).

When I'm trying to eat light, I can't skimp on flavor or good fats if I plan on sticking to the lighter diet for a while. Of course, the only calories I tend to drink are alcohol and that tends to be my undoing in the "diet" department.

I'm looking forward to reading others' suggestions.
