Bullshit. We need to end the War on Drugs and empty out the prisons of people who need medical treatment not incarceration. And we need to educate prisoners -- rehabilitate them -- not use prisons as tools of a state policy of retribution and revenge. And let's ban the death penalty, too. For starters.

Nothing has really changed... By far the largest prison system in the world, per cap.... and still much slave labor.... in corporate for profit prisons, many of whom have promises from states to maintain endless supply/high occupancy of caged human beings.... many of which are owned by Wall Street and or banks.

Tom Dillard's column, today, shows how far back Arkansas' abuse of prisoners reaches:

"The Jan. 1, 1913, issue of the Arkansas Gazette informed Arkansans that the state prosecutors were up in arms over outgoing Gov. George W. Donaghey’s recent pardoning of 360 convicts. This wholesale emptying of the prisons was Donaghey’s final attempt to put an end to the state’s decades of leasing out convicts-which often resulted in horrible mistreatment, virtual peonage and rampant corruption. Donaghey’s actions are today seen as an act of courage, but at the time the Arkansas Prosecutors Association had no trouble condemning the governor’s actions as “an insult.”

I sure hope the show goes back to 1967 when Thomas Murton was digging up bodies of murdered inmates and the Gazette had a front page picture of the Tucker telephone.

For you too young to know about the Tucker telephone it was a torture device. A generator from an old wall-mounted crank phone had two wires coming from it. One wire was attached to prisoner's genitals, the other to his anus. When cranked the generator sent an excruciating current through those parts of his body.
Only from the dark bowels of Ark's Baptist culture could something as evil as the Ark prison system emerge.
