Meanwhile:
"Michelle Rhee continues her descent into parody. You might have thought that teaching students to read would be a good way to evaluate educational performance, but no. Rhee's StudentsFirst organization has released a report card grading states—on their education policies, not their educational results. In fact, not one of the states StudentsFirst ranks in the top five is in the top half of states on the National Assessment of Educational Progress, "the nation's report card," when it comes to eighth grade reading scores, and only one is in the top half when it comes to eighth grade math.

Louisiana is the top-rated state, according to StudentsFirst. It ranks 49th of 51 on eighth grade reading scores and 47th of 51 on eighth grade math scores.
Florida is StudentsFirst's second-best state according to ideology. According to educational results, Florida is 35th on reading and 42nd on math.
"The Walton Family Foundation is driven by the urgent need to dramatically raise student achievement, particularly in low-income neighborhoods across our nation."

I wish someone would explain to me how siphoning off from public schools those students who have committed parents (if they can afford to be committed, rather than simply giving the kids a roof over their heads and decent food -- maybe) will raise student achievement. Particularly in low income neighborhoods. Remember, it's not only the kids, but also the share of money those kids would effectively transfer to the charter school.
I seem to remember that if enrollment in a district falls below a certain point, the district is forced to consolidate, presumably because economy of scale must be factored in.
I know. I know. We're not establishing additional districts -- and certainly not tiny ones. We're establishing"charter schools."
Except they sound a lot like districts to me ...

      Looked at from another perspective:

1) All Americans are familiar with WalMart's notorious treatment of its 2,200,000 employees (largely "poverty jobs" paying less than 70% of the poverty line for a family of four, and forcing workers to rely on federal subsidies for insurance and even food stamps, etc.).

2) All Americans are familiar with WalMart's spokespeople routinely lying about their unconscionable practices.

3) All Americans are familiar with WalMart's $1.2 billion in tax breaks, free land, infrastructure assistance, low-cost financing and outright grants from state and local governments around the country.

4) All Americans are familiar with taxpayers subsidizing WalMart’s low wages and poor benefits.

5) If Alice Walton's $21.2 billion fortune were $100, then her generous gift to fund Crystal Bridges would equal $0.015.

One and a half cents.

Get real about these people, people.

A couple had no idea what they were doing and hurt a lot of kids. One advertised itself in the DemGaz as having more students at the basic level than any system in Pulaski county (apparently not understanding that basic is not the preferred level of performance you want from students).
