Monsignor Royce Thomas --a HERO for the Catholic Church in an era without heroes!!

Royce Thomas was a gifted priest who had a real and positive impact on the lives of parishioners for decades in Arkansas. I was in school with him at Fayetteville in the early 1970s when he was a graduate student in history. He was a thoughtful and brilliant student. My family was in Good Counsel parish, and I had the opportunity to hear Father Thomas speak on many occasions. He was one of the very few Catholic priests who was a gifted orator, who could craft a message based on the liturgy of the day, and who could deliver it witih panache.

Father Thomas was also a caring human being. When my grandmother died he visited with our family, none of whom are major donors to the church. He drove to our home and spoke to us for more than an hour about our grandmother, and then crafted his homily to include many personal details that we related in that meeting. Her funeral was a great source of comfort to the family because of his kindness and the hard work he put into his preparation. As an organist I have attended many funerals, including many Catholic funerals that were devoid of comfort with not a single personal word about the deceased.

It is the SHAME of the Catholic Church and the bishop that they have dealt so harshly with such a fine human being. Father Thomas may not have been perfect, but the church is full of imperfect priests. Many have asked why Father Thomas should be dealt with so harshly by such an imperfect and some might suggest criminal organization ( at least in the way it has dealt with the crime of pedophilia) as the Catholic Church. Father Thomas did not deserve this treatment after his years of outstanding service. I imagine that a new bishop might have been cowed by the popularity of Father Thomas who had been featured in "high profile." There were other ways to deal with any possible transgressions of Father Thomas. The church has lost one of the few bright lights among its clergy. This was a sad occasion for Father Thomas, for the new bishop, and for the countless Catholics who will be denied the pastoral guidance of Father Thomas.

If you think it was one affair, you're wrong. Wasn't he removed from the Cathedral parish for having an affair with the organist? That was about 20 years ago. Word around town is that he has been with that organist ever since.

I've known Fr. Thomas since Catholic High days in the '70s, during which time he spent an equal amount of time at St. Mary's. Years later, he (now a monsignor) led me in the process to become a Catholic. And he was the head of an elementary and junior high in Fort Smith where he also led a parish. The point is that he had years and years of opportunity to prey on children of all ages - but didn't. Never any innuendo or rumor that anything of the sort was happening. What he did have was patience and wisdom and kindness and intelligence and mercy and respect for others and the love of God in his heart, and he will always hold a special place in my world. If he has clay feet, well, that would make him human - but no less beloved.

The Bishop is probably afraid of Fr. Thomas's popularity. Fr. Thomas is well liked by Catholics in Arkansas who would be happy to have Msgr. Thomas in their parish. He is an Arkansas native who loves the state and the people in the state whether they are Catholics, natives or not. He is what all priests should strive to be.

After I read the statement released by Barbara Dorris, Outreach Director for SNAP, I realized that the Tea Partiers had invaded the Catholic religion. Dorris, had she been a man, would have been a well-respected witch hunter. She has managed to try and convict Monsignor Thomas (yes, his title is Monsignor--one not easily come by) without a shred of evidence that he EVER committed vile acts against children. Ms. Dorris is like the fear mongerers of Washington who hide behind their loud mouths and intolerence for the truth because truth hampers their agenda. Without one fact to base it on, SNAP has publically labeled Msgr. Thomas a pedophile (if they think it's true, it must be true). This deeply offends me in more ways that I can say here, but more than that, it scares me. Hatred and predjudice in the name of God? Terrorists for the good of our children? Slanderers and libelists--our warners and protectors? No thanks. The scars you leave on people are much deeper than the ones you imagine. As a Catholic, I choose compassion and intelligent discourse; as a "Christian," you cross the line by thinking you are God. Are you listening Bishop Taylor?

Father Thomas never raised any suspicions of mine through grade school or high school. I did see him escort ladies socially back in the '80s and if he recognized me he disappeared like smoke.

Could be coincidental.

I knew Mr. Thomas as a youth in Texarkana, and he was a fine guy from a great family. Sorry for what has happened, but I rejoice in all of the good he did for many people.

If not, then I can only assume that over-imbibing will get you de-frocked. Diddling little boys will just get you transferred to another parish.
