Maybe instead of "still delivers" the headline should have read "delivers again". I agree w/ others that it had really gone downhill. My last time there was for lunch a few years back - I had noodles that seemed like they were leftover and warmed up from the night before, with a sauce that had been reheated enough times to make it almost dry.

I will add this: the staff was very friendly. Before I went, I read quite a few negative comments on the previous service; I encountered nothing but top notch service on my visit. I'll be interested to hear what some of you who have more experience have to say about the place once you've given it another try.

Haven't been there in over 5 years. The lady who owned it was so rude that I vowed my family would next set foot in that place again. Also, i have to agree with sward...the food is just as bad as he says it is. I would take Fazolis over cafe prego in a heartbeat. As I have read through the comments, I'm seeing that it is under new ownership. Hopefully they will bring a new vibe to the place. It needs to get a good cleanse from the old lady that used to own it.

WOW. It's been a good bit since I've eaten there, but it used to be my favorite Italian in town. Now that we've moved downtown, we usually find ourselves at Ciao if we want that type of food. But still, I can't fathom Prego falling as much as some are saying. Everyone, and every restaurant, has a bad night. That's why I say always try a place twice. Case in point - first time to try Taqueria Karina was awful. I mean really bad. But I listened to others and gave it another go. Now its hands down my favorite Mexican cafe in town.

I've been to Prego before but never quite understood the love and devotion that folks had for it. Now, I've put it in the same category as Browning's. For people who grew up here and went to Prego and Browning's over the years, its tradition and nostalgia that keep them coming back. Food wasn't horrible (from what I remember, its been years) but wasn't so great that I wanted to go back. There have been other reasons why I haven't returned in recent years but perhaps once new ownership gets comfortable we will try it out.

I'm glad to hear there are new owners. I stopped going there because Jacqueline Petit was consistently rude to patrons. I love the seafood crepes and both the caesar salad and creme brûlée are delicious. I don't think the pastas are anything to write home about, though. I always feel they are under-seasoned and watery (as the reviewer mentioned). There is a reason more restaurants don't to the mix and match. Certain sauces pair with certain pasta shapes. Angel hair/capellini can't stand up to a hearty bolognese; a good Alfredo needs a nice wide, long noodle to coat.

I have not, and it is possible that the new owners have upped the ante since I last ate there. However, they would have had to have upped it considerably to be on par even with Fazoli's. Everything I had on my last visit -- and I mean EVERYTHING -- was the worst thing I have ever eaten. From the foccacia to the tortellini to the sauce. It was all bad. The creme brule was also bad. The caramelized sugar was sitting on top of the custard before I walked in the door and had softened. Our service was also bad. We waited 15 minutes before we had drinks. I know I sound like a grumpy old man, but it was just that bad.

If you want not upscale Italian that is good, try Rocky's in Sherwood.

The pastas were obviously pre-bought, but I wouldn't put them down as far as Sam's Club tortellini (unless Sam's has gotten a lot better lately). The sauces are from scratch, though, and I thought they were excellent.

It isn't up-scale Italian, which is exactly what I liked about the place. The prices are fair, the food is good, and the atmosphere is excellent. It's not Mario Batali in the kitchen; but the place doesn't claim that it is.

Have you eaten there since the new owners took over?

I too don't quite get Cafe Prego; however, I think Italian food is very highly subjective - maybe more so than most any other type of food. Restaurants and specific dishes that friends gush over taste "ok" to me. While working in NYC for years, I visited several high-end Italian restaurants, one voted the best in the US, and never fully stood in amazement like I did at other equally hyped joints from other major classifications of food -- e.g. french, steak, indian, etc... What one person describes as "zesty" I describe as "tomato-pasty". I personally much prefer lighter Italian food that goes for more complex flavors -- i.e. using pine nuts, lighter sauces, fishes instead of meats, etc. Such "italian food" is more my taste; yet, to my point, other's may equally dislike that "italian" as much as I like it...

I absolutely cannot believe you gave this restaurant a good review. Prego's food is terrible all around. The tortellini tastes just like the premade stuff Sam's sells. I wouldn't feed it to a stray dog. I do not often comment on Arkansas Times material, but I could not resist the urge to call out this review as FALSE.
