As a woman, I'm all for equality. Fair pay for equal work, voting rights, etc. BUT... I do not think I would have ever been capable of hoisting a machine gun, even at the most physically capable time of my life. Most women and men are not equal physically. It's one of the things that makes the relationship between the sexes both alluring and enduring. It's what attracts us to each other.

I have no problem with women in combat if they choose to be there and they are capable. What I worry about is that this might become a precedent for the draft of all young women. Not all people belong in combat, not even men. Perhaps there should be tests that should be spelled out. Maybe there already are and I am not aware of them.

I know that I would have been a nervous wreck and gotten myself and who knows how many others killed if I had been sent to Vietnam. Not that I don't think I'm capable of killing. There is no doubt in my mind that I could and would if the need arose, but not trekking 40 miles hauling 100 pounds of equipment. Now if you asked me to push a button sending a drone into a terrorist camp, no problem. Nuke those MF's. Or if you sent me into an enemy territory and asked me to poison their water supply, hey, no problem. And if someone breaks into my house and attacks me and mine, I have no problem blowing them away. But doing what my father and grandfather did in WWI and WWII, I wouldn't have been able to do. I've heard the stories over and over, and I know that I couldn't have survived what they did.

Thank God I am well beyond the draft age. Sadly, my daughter is not. I don't even want to THINK about her having to endure war. As long as there is a voluntary military, I have no problem with females in the front lines. But if there are not caveats written into this law prohibiting the wholesale use of females in the military, I have a big problem with it.

Shame on every one of you who voted him into office. And even more shame on the media for praising Cotton for the HUGE amount of out of state contributions he received during the elections.

You KNEW he was bought and paid for by the Kochs, but based his merit soley on his money. On the other hand, his opponent was ridiculed for doing just the opposite. He did NOT want to owe anyone any favors in D.C.

It was clearly evident before Cotton was elected that he "moved" to Arkansas to gain a political office. Tom Cotton is the definition of a carpetbagger and you, the media, helped him into Congress.

So once again, shame on the blind people who voted for this man and shame on the media who encouraged his Koch support. The fourth district of Arkansas will never have their voices heard.

I thought that Coolbreeze's remark was rather odd, too, ArkansasGirl. Maybe he can't spell quiche. Or he forgot about latte-sipping. I can skip the latte, but I can't cook without garlic.

Also rather odd is Tom Cotton's political acumen. Why, if he's so smart, has he chosen to board a sinking ship? I'm thinking he has missed all the postmortems about his party. His insensitivity to women and storm victims might win a Congressional district in Arkansas, but if he has grander ambitions, he just sank like the Titanic.

"Romney's loss forced the GOP to recognize that its support is built on a shrinking base of aging, ethnically monolithic, and geographically isolated voters --"

Another way of putting it is "old, white, southerners".
IF they are qualified that is one thing ... There was a female personal trainer at my gym, in W.NY (a city 2x the size of LR), who reportedly got the highest test EVER on the physical fitness portion of the firefighters exam. I have no doubt she could take care of herself physically.

The problem comes and when politicians want to make a point (political grandstanding) and relax the standards and/or pass people who shouldn't be passed. An example might be LT. Kara Hultgreen, who was passed for political reasons and ended up killing herself when she crashed her F-14 into the ocean.

Jake, it is NOT the women, the danger of blowing a mission is from the men but alas the women pay the price. I have no problem with women's equality as long as they walk three feet behind me to the right, cover their faces and bodies and sit in their section of the Church. What are you complaining about? We let them vote and drive. Is the arguement because we won't put them into a situation that because of no other reason than their wanting to be there (and are qualified to be) some guys are going to get their asses shot up because of the distraction?

lol back in the day when I wore a uniform that came with a gun there would sometimes be discussions regarding who the guys would rather fight, another guy or a - gasp - female type. Hands down they agreed they would rather fight another guy. Why you ask? Well, because they could trust the guys to fight like guys and they knew how to fight them. But dang, those women fight dirty. It's not that they had a problem getting physically the weaker sex, not at all. Women don't fight fair. They fight dirty. And they're unpredictable.

We are different than those in the penis brigade, but that doesn't mean that we're all the same. And some of us like adrenalin and danger and weapons and WINNING. Cotton and the rest of his ilk need to get over it.

How many posters slamming Cotton (a two tour combat vet) have actually served in face-to-face combat? Cotton has a good point NOT because it's the women's fault. Women serve in Israel's armed forces and others and do well and die along with the men. But their needs are different from ours and while their citizens may accept female combat deaths, we are a bunch of bleeding hearts. The problem is men in the line units who care for the women or at least worry about their not being able to hold their own (I believe it's called the Dusty Syndrome) who will endanger themselves to protect the women regardless if they need it or not, and at a cost to the mission. WITF would a women want to serve front line anyway, or even in a Ranger or Seal unit is beyond me. I am not suggesting they could not qualify, it is the mission stupid.

I love Tom Cotton. I want to marry Tom Cotton but that would be illegal in Arkansas. Apparently all Cotton does between casting idiotic votes is pen outrageous op-eds and appear on any form of media that will have him. In trying to make a name for himself Cotton is being given a more than adequate supply of rope to hang himself with. Here he is on our local news saying you can call him and he'll take your call!
Two full terms as president, and GW never once tried to get abortion outlawed, or Christian prayer mandated in public schools. You're bring played for a sucker, man.

Let me say something else. I went on active duty in 1974. At that time, one of the big issues was whether women should be allowed to become pilots.

A helicopter pilot in my unit in Korea stated that women could not be pilots because they lacked the upper body strength to control the aircraft if the hydraulic system was damaged. I asked him what the standard for upper body strength was for being accepted into pilot training. There was none. He, himself, had never been tested to see if he met this "critical" standard.

Facts are irrelevant when you are playing to your base.

Conservative Arkansan voters 1) support Israel's military unconditionally and 2) do not think women should be in combat. Therefore Tom Cotton adopts those positions without a care in the world that they are logically in conflict with one another.

Tom Cotton: The poster child for modern conservatism. No brains, just a good name, lots of camo clothing, and the deep desire to do what he is told without thinking about it.

I wish I lived close to where Bill Buckley is buried, because I could heat my home from the friction of his spinning in the grave.

Family stories of that legendary (to me, but apparently not to Daddy) lady put her at several inches below five feet tall, but a true powerhouse to those young'uns -- child or adult -- who crossed the line with her.
Think Tom will bend down so I can grab his ears, or will I have to take a stepladder?
(I'm not sure which is harder for me to believe -- that the man can be such an uncaring troglodyte, or that people in the Fourth elected him.)

Ref Gylippus. Here is a simple solution: Create a rational physical standard for the infantry and anyone who passes the test can join.

Anytime someone says "women can't", you can stop listening because anything else they say is BS. Because most women aren't physically capable (just as most men aren't) is not justification for saying that no women can serve in the infantry.

During my 22 year career, I had a secondary mission to serve as an infantryman. This was despite, at the end of my career, being 44 years old with back and knee injuries that would have prevented me from carrying 25 lbs any distance.
