Except in the bars and clubs of [my] Hot Springs local police guarded the slots, casinos and gambling parlors during their off time. They were paid well. They also let local operators know in advance of any state police raids.

I don't understand the argument against gay marriage. Hell, our marriage is just
like any other.

Sometimes I wish we swung from the chandelier having sex all the time (as
Teabagging evangelicals like to paint us), but we don't. We're just like you.

I wish our marriage was different from the straights, but it's not. We fight
about the exact same things.

WIES and I are still squabbling about her Step-Dad from the Thanksgiving fiasco (He's still causing problems and draining $ from our account).
We fight about finances. We fight about our pets. We fight about where to
put the sofa. We fight about the toaster. We fight about my love for SEC
football (she has a point there), and we fight about her always being late.

Marriage is hard, whether it's gay or straight. We've been together 7 1/2 years
and legally married in 8 states for 6 months. It's a fucking track meet.

I adore WIES but no longer think we're infallible. We're just like you.

Durango, where is that 3-carat diamond you promised me in the Caribbean?

“The death panel and marriage open line”

Speaking of death (and Hot Springs), here is an unusual obituary (I collect ‘em) published in the Sentinel-Record yesterday. The Spa City is filled with peculiar people, and obviously Miss Gillem was one of ‘em. Read on:

Blue Gillem, 80, died the night of Dec. 23, 2012, after a heartwrenching fight against Alzheimers and metastatic cancer.

Blue (née Marilyn Sayre) was a mouthy, often abrasive, always entertaining woman whose very name is testament to her ability to “cuss a blue streak.”

She never married and had no children, but changed her name after running away from her home in Ohio to live in Arkansas with one of horse racing’s more successful trainers. She spent a carefree life of traveling, attending horse races and parties.

Blue grew into a very private woman in her last ten years, yet always had time for young children and animals. She was impossible to get along with, was always right, and enjoyed rubbing people the wrong way.

For the minuscule few that really knew her, we knew of a tender, playful side that showed itself when she saw fit to show it.

She died just before Christmas — her favorite holiday — and we hope that since she had spent Christmas alone for many years, that she rejoined those who passed away long before her and that together they had a true Christmas celebration.

Blue was predeceased by her enormous and loyal black lab, Peter Sunshine Esquire. She is survived by her two friends, who were also her caregivers, Alana and Jessica. She passed peacefully in their arms as the song “Last Kiss” played.

She would also want listed as survivors her loving cat Tiger and dog Charley with whom she spent countless contented hours. There will be no memorial service.

(I’d bet a year’s worth of Power Ball tickets that Blue and jazzy woulda loved each other.)

A listing of the impact of the new Farm bill that was passed and which hits small rural, agricultural states the most:

The farm bill extension also put the following at Jeopardy:

A number of programs lost mandatory money, and are now authorized, but subject to funds being appropriated, which is unlikely. Some of those programs include:

· Disaster Programs (except SURE, which was not reauthorized at all)

· National Clean Plant Network (authorized at $5 million, subject to appropriation)

· Specialty Crop Research Initiative (authorized at $100 million, subject to appropriation)

· Farmers Market Promotion Program (authorized at $10 million, subject to appropriation)

· Organic Ag Research and Extension (authorized at $25 million, subject to appropriation)

· National Organic Certification Cost-Share (authorized at $22 million, subject to appropriation)

· Biomass Crop Assistance program (authorized at $20 million, subject to appropriation)

Other programs not funded:

· Rural Microentrepreneur Assistance Program

· Value-Added Producer Grants

· Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program

· Outreach and Technical Assistance for Socially Disadvantaged Farmers and Ranchers

· Biobased Marketing Program

· Biodiesel Fuel Education Program

· Rural Energy for American Program

· Biomass Research and Development

· Biorefinery Assistance

· Bioenergy for Advanced Biofuels

· Voluntary Public Access

· Desert Terminal Lakes

· Small Watershed Rehabilitation
eLwood, what you described above about slots refers to the old-fashioned one-arm bandits, which you had to activate by pulling a lever to the side, which gave a person a little more action for his money, and which took a little more time than the push-buttons of today, which are intended to take your money a little quicker. The modern-day slots and the modern-day casinos are not nearly as interesting as the illegal Hot Springs operations. You know, the idea of breaking the law adds a little bit to the excitement of gambling, just like the street corner craps games, where you never know when the police are going to break it up.

Although the United States spends more on healthcare than other rich countries – $8600 per person per year, twice what Britain, France and Sweden spend – we don’t live longer and we aren’t healthier. We die younger from diseases such as obesity and heart disease, and we are far more likely to be murdered and die in car accidents, the researchers at the National Academy of Sciences found.

The National Research Council and Institute of Medicine compared the health of Americans to that of people in Canada, Australia, Japan, and 13 European countries. Americans did worse in nine areas: infant mortality; injury and homicide rates; teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases; the AIDS virus; drug abuse; obesity and diabetes; heart disease; lung disease; and disabilities.

But Americans do have a lower death rate from cancer and we manage blood pressure and cholesterol better, and if we are fortunate enough to reach age 75, we live longer than people in our peer countries.
Does Sunshine ever research any of the sources she uses for information? ThoughtfulWomen is a project of the Western Center for Journalism. The people over at that joint love and defend Arpaio and Alex Jones, among others.

Currently, thoughtful women are atwitter over Nancy Pelosi photo-shopping some absent members into an official photograph. Pelosi readily admitted doing it because it was freezing and she didn't want to ask members to stand out in the cold waiting. This makes her a liar or something.

The article Sunshine linked was a link to Politico. Since there are no comments at ThoughtfulWomen yet, it is hard to say if thoughtful women like Cotton or not. I am reasonable certain that thoughtless women will adore him.

Get it on paper, signed and witnessed so you will be your own death panel.
60% of Medicare is spent on the last six months of life or dying, which ever you prefer.
The fastest growing age segment of our society is the 90+ group. What purpose that will serve is beyond me.
As usual Democrats don't get messaging. First you tell the nuts there are no death panels and then you tell what they are for and why you need them. Better to just stick with the truth. There are death panels, they're just not panels and they are not about killing people only about end of life care. Care is the operative word there.

      >>illegal slot machines.

If only they were. Growing up in Hot Springs during the heydays of illegal gambling, Orval was guv, I miss the old 'one-armed bandits.' They were all chrome or stainless, had wonderful bells, glaring art designs and real grinding sounds as wheels scrapped and interlocked, grinding out a music only the hopeful could love. I hit a few 25cent jackpots. It would buy gasoline for a month for my VW bug.

But today's circuit boards in cheap fiberboard boxes or tin are just lacking-tacky and don't pay off as well and those electric jips, beeps, and other weird sounds will never replace the ring of a real "JACKPOT" bell when three rows of cherries lined up.
