When it comes to the point when someone tries to tell me this is a "Christian Nation", I would like a few minutes of your time to take you on a journey to a few (quite a few) dark streets and detention centers, to prove their point . . . . Or would it be my point? This nation is so full of questionable practices and corruption in high places (including church and religious institutions), there would be very little of the light of Christianity shinning through! I've seen more Christ like people in Atheist countries than on the streets of most larger American cities.

Or....or 30 minutes before any public taxpayer sponsored sporting event or any event for that matter, the opening of a new Chevy showroom at Cotton Plant included, a 30 minute prayer-fest could be held where all known religious groups & atheist groups could deliver the prayer of their choice to the open air over the loud speaker.

Prayers & praying never helped me...in fact looking at my personal history, if I prayed for you, you were a goner. On the other hand if you want to pray for me....get after it. If I was Allah I'd rid the world of organized religion since it would instantly diminish most of the wars going on around the globe and I'd finally get a peek at some shapely Nazarene legs and it would free up some prime real estate and plump up the tax rolls.

But mostly it's the sledgehammer dominance of the GM of religious brands that bothers me. I spent 17 years attending Christian Christmas programs at my kid's public schools while all sorts of non-Christian students and parents sat there with puzzled looks on their faces. Where were the thingamajigs of their particular brand of religion? Where was one of their classmates up on stage wearing Allah clothings and handing out goats or whatever they do to celebrate a holiday? I promise, one holiday religious program of another non-Christian faith performed at a Fort Baptist school would start WWIII. Unfair! Unfair!

Us at the DBI compound are all about the FAIR & EQUAL treatment of all the people on earth. If there is a sin on this planet it's parents teaching the doctrine of We Can-They Can't. We can practice our religion in tax payer facilities, they can't. We can define the meaning of human sexuality, they can't. We can choose to not pay taxes, they can't. We can tell women what they can do with their bodies....women can't have that control....and on and on and on. So wrong. So 14th century! So against everything America is supposed to be.

Praying is like talking about stiffer gun laws.....nothing ever happens...so pray your ass off, but not in a public venue supported by taxpayers who are of every religion-are of no religion UNLESS room is made for everyone....even the dope smokers who see the face of Jesus on their rolling papers.

So start yer event 30 minutes early so people can pray or swap AK47s or sun themselves in the nude before young athletes hammer their brains for life slamming into each other on the sporting field. But don't leave anyone out of the festivities...unless this is a private event held on private property......in that case bring out your white hooded robes and have a ball. Public means for all. Private means whatever you can get away with.....know the difference.

“The objections are focused on the sponsor of the breakfast,
a secretive evangelical Christian network called The Fellowship,
also known as The Family…”

In case anyone has forgotten, “The Family” indoctrinates leaders to believe that they’re held to a different standard than the little people. Leaders do not have to follow the law or religious tenets because God is working through them & therefore they can do wrong.

Perhaps, in our official prayer making capacity, we should decide whether to worship as taught by either the "Apostle of the Lawgiver" or "The keepers of the divine Bomb”.

“Beware the beast Man, for he is the Devil's pawn. Alone among God's primates, he kills for sport or lust or greed. Yea, he will murder his brother to possess his brother's land. Let him not breed in great numbers, for he will make a desert of his home and yours. Shun him; drive him back into his jungle lair, for he is the harbinger of death.”
American Christianity is not the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints. I believe Christ holds our "Christian" leaders today in as much contempt as he did the Pharisees.
In contrast, I do appreciate a good long moment of silence at public gatherings.

      Ratings. He needs ratings.

"Former Arkansas Governor" and Pudgy Potentate of Pork Mike Huckabee (also former Baptist minister / current anti-gay bigot, so there's the tie-in to this prayer thread) does The Natural State proud by ranting on brat-like to stay in the news cycle, save his show and stretch his semi-lucrative contract.

(Semi- because he's nowhere NEAR the same league as Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck.)

The Faubus of his generation, guaranteeing Arkansas ANOTHER sixty years of derogatory jokes nationwide.

Maybe Huckabee, Dustin McDaniel and Andi Davis can pool concepts and come up with a Reality pitch that Trifecta will be interested in for fifteen more minutes.

"Schmucks Run Amok" or something Jew-inclusive for Hank Cohen.

(Who, if you call him at Trifecta, tell him Norma sent you and DON'T remind him that Huckabee's "faith" says he's going to Hell with the homos).

So grown up, these people.

Let us pray . . . .

Of course, confusion is more than understandable: it's practically state-ordained.

Why is it okay to have prayers at Presidential Inaugurations? Why okay to hold the National Prayer Breakfast every February?

But not okay to pray before high school games.

Certainly, faith-based rituals at the highest levels of government are equally controversial and out of place. (Ask your Talks-To-Snakes Mark Pryor and The Family).

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/04/us/polit…

Seems hypocritical, at best, when something's okay for the three branches of national government in Washington but not okay for high school jocks, cheerleaders and their friends / families.

Crazy.

How about prayer at Presidential Inaugurations, then? Same principle.

Oh, sure: they're "non-denominational." But they're still a federal endorsement of religion over non-religion.

His staff made the enormously insulting (and un-American) faux pas of inviting Christian same-sex hater Rick Warren to give the benediction at President Obama's first inauguration, to well-deserved widespread controversy.

This time around? His staff has invited ANOTHER same-sex hater, Louie Giglio, to do the same. With the same predictable results.

Why? Why with a President who has come out forcefully for Constitutional same-sex equality?

To "appease" whom? Evangelical gay-hating voters who've never supported Obama in any case, and who never will?

To make what kind of statement, exactly?

These things are no more "accidental" than Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction."

President Obama's staff HAS to know what they're doing and he HAS to sign off.

So why?

There is already a movement afoot to officially declare the offensively anti-gay Catholic Church a Hate Group, which it is. The movement will go nowhere . . . yet.

But that day is coming.

Religious "freedom" in America does not include the "freedom" to incite through hate speech (the equivalent of yelling "Fire!" in a crowded theatre), no matter how destructive the Pope's broadcast bigotry from within the Vatican.

So what's the administration's point by inviting Giglio?

Typically people only like public prayer at such events if it is their prayer meant for their specific god.

I think most EPC parents who went to Detroit for a relative's high school graduation would be most uncomfortable as the Adhan rang out over the loudspeakers and everyone (well the men anyway) were asked to pray to Allah.

(I've noticed that PAs pre-football game prayers seem to be more directed toward god than Jesus - perhaps to make them more inclusive?)

Seriously, though, couldn't these public schools get away with asking the crowd for 15 seconds of silence after the SSB and figure that all but the most dense could figure out it was for silent (rather than publc) prayer?
