Hey Little Rock: All Americans are NOT christians, and that's a GOOD thing. Your false, mythological beliefs are destroying this country and our planet. It is time for logic and reason to replace fear-mongering fairy tales.

I don't use the Bible as a weapon. I don't force my religion on anyone else, nor do I believe Hitler is in heaven. Why all the generalizations? Also, politicians make dumb moves all the time. They use ANYTHING they can as a weapon. The majority of Americans call themselves "Christian". Unfortunately, this makes it an obvious target, and an easy weapon to yield.

Well, there's nothing that will turn someone against religion more quickly than having it forced down their throat. Unless it's the government taking their tax dollars and spending them to advance a particular religion.

Yes, these kinds of things ARE why unbelievers are on the rise. It's tough to argue for Christianity when the Bible is used as a weapon - in this case economic.

Or when Christianity is the only religion (that I know of) where the predominant theology is that belief, not action or behavior, is the ticket to salvation. Had Hitler made a deathbed conversion with his last breath, the evangelical view is that he'd now be in heaven and looking down on Ghandi burning in hell. It's hard to sell that concept to a thinking person. I chalk it up to Paul's brilliant marketing, which worked back then but is killing the church now, even after he's been promoted to godhood, aka Jesus Jr.

Little Rock has never wanted to deal in a realistic and humane way with the homeless people and families that spend nights under its bridges. How many years did it take for them to craft this "solution?" How long did they try to keep the VA clinic for homeless vets from opening?

This is the easiest way to continue avoiding the issue. That one lawsuit that shuts this down will make it really easy for Stodola and Carpenter to say, "Well see, we tried..."
@jtsanda - Some famous guy once said "Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's." If you take public money, you have to follow public law - which prohibits discriminatory hiring. URM is free to spend privately-contributed money as it sees fit - but this is tax money, taken from Christians and non-Christians alike.

Johnston is both a friend/advocate for the homeless, and a patriotic and keen observer of the political scene. He should be, with a PhD in political science and former professor at West Point. Bless him for raising this important issue. This is no "war on religion" (there isn't one anyway), but rather an appropriate concern about how taxpayer funds are appropriately used.

I always thought one was hired for a job based on their skill set. And never once in my 57 years of working life or close to it, of being an atheist did I lose out on a job for being one. And "this" is a job that involves accepting tax payer funds to help the poor and disadvantaged. Church business is church business and they can hire who they want but public business is different. And comments to the contrary actually do add to thoughts about leaving religion behind. I did and feel very good about it. And no you are not ridiculing me, that is the beauty of this country, everyone has an opportunity to make a fool out of themselves.

We've got to get the Christians out of this sort of thing.

Who needs them when there are so many support organizations - groups of Jews, Atheists, Unitarians, Buddhists, Hindu, Muslims, etc. - who are obviously much more capable and ready to step up to the task? Besides, Atheists have a much longer and stronger history of starting hospitals and doing good work than Christians could ever claim.

In any event, who would want anyone to run an entity like this one based on restrictive principals like these anyway:

- Professional and personal life reflects integrity, personal responsibility and character.
- A servant’s heart and compassion for those who are lost, and are hurting yet not an enabler.

To heck with these closed-minded, incompetent people.

Just more of the same, folks, just more of the same.
Now move on. Nothing to see here.
NOT, and I say that as a resident and voter of an area which has had more than its share of doofuses (doofi?) elected to public office. (I plead not quilty to the charge of voting for a doofus.)
Unless I missed something, Union Rescue Mission deemed the old building too far gone to continue to use, so they moved. City bought the old building, spent big bucks and a lot of time to renovate it and now they want to pay Union Rescue Mission to run it -- in an evangelical Christian manner if URM so chooses, which they do.
But I say, even before the "evangelical Christian manner" reared its head, didn't the whole deal stink from a purely economic angle to all but the URM?
Yep, you folks have doofuses (doofi?) too. Sigh. Guess we all do.

YMB it is called Murphy's Law as enforced by graduates of The Peter Principle Academy. That is, they practice the universal apitude for ineptitude.

Our addlepated City Board does it again. I've come to believe that the criteria for hiring a City Attorney stipulates that he/she possess no legal knowledge beyond the 19th century ... and be illiterate. The endless parade of bungles this board has marched through LR has left dung heaps that would shame a herd of elephants.
