How about wikipedia? If you are born poor in America, you are likely to die poor in America, and if you are born rich, then you too can own your own congressman, just like the Kochs and the Stephenses and the Waltons.

"According to the 2007 "American Dream Report" study, "by some measurements"—relative mobility between generations -- "we are actually a less mobile society than many other nations, including Canada, France, Germany and most Scandinavian countries. This challenges the notion of America as the land of opportunity."[1]

"Another 2007 study ("Economic Mobility Project: Across Generations") found significant upward "absolute" mobility from the late 1960s to 2007, with two thirds of those who were children in 1968 reporting more household income than their parents[3] (although most of this growth in total family income can be attributed to the increasing number of women who work since male earnings have stayed relatively stable throughout this time[3]).

"However, in terms of relative mobility it stated: "contrary to American beliefs about equality of opportunity, a child’s economic position is heavily influenced by that of his or her parents."[3] 42% of children born to parents in the bottom fifth of the income distribution ("quintile") remain in the bottom, while 39% born to parents in the top fifth remain at the top.[3] Only half of the generation studied exceeded their parents economic standing by moving up one or more quintiles.[3] ....

Children previously from lower-income families had only a 1% chance of having an income that ranks in the top 5%.[4] On the other hand, the children of wealthy families have a 22% chance of reaching the top 5%.[4]
"New York University economist Edward Wolff has done the best work I’ve seen on the contribution of inheritance to wealth inequality, and his latest paper, coauthored with the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Maury Gittleman, is chock full of relevant data on the matter. In 2007, the last year Wolff and Gittleman look at, wealth transfers (mainly inheritances, but also including gifts) made up, on average, 14.7 percent of the total wealth of the 1 percent (more specifically, the top 1 percent in terms of wealth). Interestingly, inheritance’s share has declined over time. In 1992, 27 percent of the wealth of the top 1 percent came from wealth transfers."
There you go again Deathby, Hispanics. What about the Somalians who are coming up on the radar more frequently as aiding terror? The Russians who absolutely ruined Brooklyn and other parts of New York City, and are a major crime factor in the US. The Vietnamese who assilimated very well and are a great people. There are more recent massive influxes from all over the world. But for some reason everyone keys on Hispanics probably because they represent the largest number of people who illegally entered the country, although there was one Chinese waitress in Jacksonville more fluent in Spanish than English. With regards to my faux interview, it was tounge in cheek and another example why I should not try to tell jokes.

Actually. arhogfan501, most of the 1% got their money by being members of the Lucky Sperm Club. They didn't earn it themselves and most don't have any idea what their father or grandfather did to actually get a start. Many have never worked at the ground level in the business that generated the money to enable them to be able to buy congressional critters.

And most of us don't sit by a computer all day waiting for someone to make dumb comments. But to say that the rich actually earned their money is a joke in at least 75% of the cases. And those of us who are retired earned the right to do what we damn well want to. Afterall , we did our work, paid our dues, and have managed to survive the Republican onslaught on our personal liberties.

"We're all human beings and we should be treated equally." Then goes straight to blaming the 1%. Really? I have never understood people who spend their days blaming other people for their woes. Growing up poor, I never once heard my parents or grandparents sit around on their ass blaming other people for us being poor. They worked their ass off and we had what we had. They didn't sit at a computer all day on a blog bitching and blaming other people. I'm not part of the 1%, but I would guess that they didn't get where they are by sitting on a blog everyday. The time has come for Americans to start accepting responsibility for their own lives. I see most Hispanics as very hard working. Most don't sit around milking years of unemployment benefits, welfare and SNAP benefits like some Americans have become accustomed to.

I was with you to the last part, Razor. How can you look at Wayne LaPierre and say no one slipping under the fence from Mexico deserves to be a US citizen? No one except maybe people on death row deserves to be given 2nd class status. No good comes from giving anyone sorta kinda status in America.

The one part of Obama's proposed new emigration reform I don't like is the special status that will give highly skilled foreigners a fast ticket to citizenship. I have no idea of the legal status or skill status of the hundreds of Hispanics who live in my neighborhood, some barely 20 feet away from my house, but having watched them closely for the last 10 years I can tell you they work hard, they're clean and neat, I've never had a problem with them stealing or ogling my tasty young daughters and they've caught on quickly to the American Dream, I'm watching them live it.

They in no way deserve any kind of 2nd place status in our country. It's not OK to decide some humans get a fast track to plenty of food on their tables and a nice warm room to shit or sleep. What kind of All Men Are Created Equal do you and Obama not understand? Fast tracking the highly skilled immigrants best serves the Republican corporate desire for great workers....to hell with those who can only saw a board straight, put on a good roof or trim a bush in the shape of a poodle.

We're all human beings and we should all be treated equally. At the same time we should be mighty worried and upset that all the good jobs are leaving our soil...simply to increase the profits of the already filthy rich. Better be nice to Mexicans because if this keeps up you're going to be spending 70 hours per week standing right next to them gutting chickens or stocking a Wal-Mart shelf. The 1% aims for us all being 2nd class citizens in the near future and you won't get to pick your Foxconn co-workers, the Koch brothers & Waltons will do the picking.

Why does everyone seem to think the only immigrants wanting to enter the United States are from Mexico? Anyone ever notice the unending supply of workers in Chinese restaurants? No one seems concerned about them. Unless you are a native American, you or your ancestors were immigrants, mine were. With the excetion of early "voluntary" arrivals, the government began controlling immigration to protect us from disease carriers. I met several distant relatives in Republic de Panama whose ancestors were turned away at Ellis Island for health reasons (TB I think) and I guess Colon was the ship's next stop although Cuba was closer. Absolutely no objection to controlled immigration; and absolutely no objection to not punishing children already here for the sins of their parents. The rub is rewarding illegal activity with citizenship. Legal resident status is even okay with me for the established families, but not citizenship. I envision the hearing conversation. Hearing officer: will you vote Publican or Dumbocrat. Illegal immigrant: Ummmm, for the Obama guy. Hearing officer: Welcome to America, here's a bag of free stuff.

The best stuff I've had there (Leon Negro, Negro Modelo) is better than some of the macrobrewed stuff that folks here fill up on, but even that was hard to find. And the output of some of our smaller breweries here leaves anything I got in Mexico standing in the dust.
