I was going to make some kind of a joke about a midget or dwarf griping about the misuse of her horses but that would be wrong of me since it would be politically incorrect of me, not to mention that this IS truly despicable. The lady wants help in identifying the culprit in her video based on a shot of his back. God help me, but the first thought that ran through my mind was that it was Bobby Petrino. Not that it was (I know he ain't a pervert) but just sayin...

" Our grandparents had it spot on. America was strong and feared by the rest of the world. I believe in American Exceptionalism!"

That would depend on when your grandparents lived. During the great depression there was a lot of communist sympathy in this country. Bad times will always cause discontent. We were potentially strong during this period but we weren't particularly feared because that's all it was...potential. Then came WWII and that great potential was unleashed and because the battlefields weren't here, none of our infrastructure was destroyed like that which occurred throughout Europe and Asia.

After that war we probably were strong and feared. After all, by default, we were the strongest, militarily and economically, in the world. It didn't hurt that we alone had the power of atomic weaponry either.

That nuclear monopoly only lasted about 4 years but we easily could have destroyed the Soviet Union militarily at any time up until around 1960 when mutually assured destruction (MAD) became an actual fact. The fact is that we didn't destroy them and the fact is instead of punishing the WWII losers we helped to rebuild their economies as well as those of our allies. That was different, instead of sowing the seeds of the next war, our efforts resulted in Nissan plants in Mississippi, BMW plants in Alabama, and Toyota plants in Kentucky. These kinds of policy were what made us EXCEPTIONAL and what made allies out of our former enemies. Strength and fear had little to do with it.

We seem to have forgotten all that. Now, American Exceptionalism seems to be all about pushing other countries around and trying to force our values upon them. That doesn't work on a personal level and sure-as-hell doesn't work internationally.

Really, with all our technology and advances, the only plausible choice for us eventually will be ONE WORLD GOVERNMENT. There may even be some black helicopters flying around, who knows? It may not be a government we all agree with but yet there will be some form of unity. Or we could just start all over.

I know this is all too simplistic for all you professional historians out there but, I invite you, sincerely, to show me the errors in my thinking.

I believe in Terran Exceptionalism, although it'll take a while to accomplish. We still have to convert rogues like North Korea and NB from Pangburn.

CBB and MG, you two are a breath of fresh air. Love your updates. You too, my dear HHW.

I sometimes wonder about the psyche of a person who stalks a blog yet disparages everything written on it. It's obviously a sad and depressed soul and one we
should take great pity. This is not a people-person and he exhibits anti-social behaviors. We may need to tread delicately with a person who changes handles frequently and seeks negative attention. Our Pangburn fellow has all the makings of a textbook psycho, if you ask me. Mecca, I think you picked up on this too:)

Well, WIES and I saw "Django Unchained'' this afternoon and gave the film a resounding Two Thumbs up. As we've discussed before on this forum, Quentin Tarantino isn't for everybody (Dott, my love, please don't see this movie. Don't even be tempted to rent it 10 years from now).

If you liked "Inglorious Basterds,'' you'll love this. Believe it or not, there's even more gore in this flick. Jamie Foxx and Samuel L. Jackson were fantastic, but Christoph Waltz was absolutely riveting and very deserving of his Oscar nomination. Leonardo DiCraprio was convincing too, but not like the other three.

I have a thing for Christoph Waltz. If I'm struck by an evangelical lightning bolt from Mike Huckabee and suddenly become straight, I'm going to stalk him like that Pangburn guy stalks this blog (although I'll use my feminine charms and knowledge of beer & SEC football to win him over. Pangburn guy would just insult him from the get-go and expect positive results). My loving wife feels the same.

As HHW has said, I like how Open Line is like our neighborhood bar. The regulars were my saving grace when WIES was at war and I was here alone. DADT was still on the books and she and I couldn't email/skype/speak of anything a couple could for fear of her being expelled from her job.

I have a lot of friends, but none as empathetic toward my plight as you guys were during that time. Arkansas may be one of the more backward states politically than any in the country, but we have a pocket of folks on this blog who are the most insightful, caring, intelligent and dear people on the planet. Wouldn't trade y'all for anybody.

We've lost a few voices (notably, Tap) but have gained regulars in MG, Outlier, Verla and Yellowdog. Y'all missed my nightly ramblings in 2010:) The toaster issue went on for weeks.

Pangburn guy, if you feel this post is better suited for Facebook, KISS MY ASS, you screwed up loser from hell. Open Line is for people who aren't dickheads.

XXOO,
What coolbreeze calls American Exceptalism, I call American Arrogance!

We aren't exceptional except for the fact that 25% of all the people incarcerated in the world are locked up in the old US of A. Many nations began years ahead of the US and yet, we feel that we are the only ones that "got it right" as we try to shove our view of the world down on other countries with a "might equals right" attitude. We refuse to aacknowledge that others have actually solved the problems for which we still refuse to see the answer. For example, we claim to be first in healthcare but that is only for those with all the money while the rest see that we are #37 in the world in healthcare outcomes. While pockets of the US have excellant infant mortatlity rates, on average we fall behind many countries including 2 of our neighbors north of us (Canada and Pierre & Miquelon). Because our entire existence is based on a greed system, we have those who work to insure that there will always be a cheap labor force to support their business needs. We have a political system where systematic bribes are excused as "campaign contributions", making the "republic" into an "oligarchy", sold to teh highest bidder.

Hell, the Taliban even taught the Republicans about degrading women and forcing religion down other people's throat. The Russians taught us how to spy on everyone and the Nepalese taught us to act like everything is okay while it is going to hell in a handbasket.

NB, we can tell you want to be like us, but you're a little afraid. It's ok. Get in touch with your humanity--the fact that we all breathe, bleed, die, laugh, cry--and then appreciate our common experience. You'll find a lot of comfort, wisdom, and humor here. No shame in that. We'll welcome you. Cool breeze, sorry, but I just don't have much hope for you but I have tried. It's important for you both to remember the pulley system of self-esteem:making yourself feel better by belittling others. Remember, y'all started the snarky.

Cbb…so glad the baby is doing well and the others waiting to be born are holding off a bit longer. Hope you didn’t have any damage from the rain.

Reports vary, but we received somewhere between 5-6 inches of rain. But up here, we got an enormous amount of run off from the top of the mountain, resulting in much more water for the pond. Finally after almost two years of being told this idea of mine (digging deep water pools into solid rock on an extreme slope) was foolish and impractical and a big waste of money, I finally got to see it work the way I had hoped. I made multiple hikes up to the pond yesterday during the storm so I could literally watch the water rise. It is now completely over the tops of the rock levies and one large body of water.

The water washed down the hill with such velocity that it brought a lot of debris with it (branches, sticks, rock, mud, silt, etc.) so the pond is very muddy right now. I ran the aerator today and will do so tomorrow and that should do the trick.

On the down side, the force of the water took part of my road out. But it can be repaired.
