Skip, sorry to say it is going to be a while before the government does right by you. The good news is all four of our Congressmen are veterans and three of them have been to the sand box. I know the fourth was in Sinai but don't know about further East, I'll have to check. Hang in there brother and, "welcome home."

well this is a good thing. But what about us Disabled Veterans that have a Honorable Discharged and left the service back in 1995 or so. This Discriminates us veterans. We are still suffering with unemployment and PTSD from the forgotten conflicts.

et, absolutely correct about the feds, both publicans and dumbocrats. Problem is most Agent Orange vets died before they could receive benefits. You may recall, it was the same deal with the atomic tests participants. It's not as much as the elected officials, it is the behind the scene bean counters who President's listen to. I recall we (retired military) were really pissed at the (second) Bush at the end of his first term over a related issue; and had anyone more acceptable than Kerry run against him, that person would have received many retired military votes.

      >>Don't combat veterans get VA healthcare?

If they can establish a service related condition. That's part of the red tape Carry mentioned. Back in the LBJ & Nixon Admin "Agent Orange," which could damage lungs and larynx while producing birth defects, was not considered a service related condition. Feds like to balance the budget on the backs of those who fight for chickenhawks while carefully and thoroughly taking care of our too big to fail banks.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"The RAND Corporation's Memorandum 5446-ISA/ARPA states: "the fact that the VC [Viet Cong] obtain most of their food from the neutral rural population dictates the destruction of civilian crops ... if they (the VC) are to be hampered by the crop destruction program, it will be necessary to destroy large portions of the rural economy – probably 50% or more".

Rural-to-urban migration rates dramatically increased in South Vietnam, as peasants escaped the war in the countryside by fleeing to the U.S.-dominated cities. The urban population in South Vietnam nearly tripled, growing from 2.8 million people in 1958 to 8 million by 1971. The rapid flow of people led to a fast-paced and uncontrolled urbanization; an estimated 1.5 million people were living in Saigon slums
.......
"In 1991, the US Congress enacted the Agent Orange Act, giving the Department of Veterans Affairs the authority to declare certain conditions 'presumptive' to exposure to Agent Orange/dioxin, making these veterans who served in Vietnam eligible to receive treatment and compensation for these conditions. The same law required the National Academy of Sciences to periodically review the science on dioxin and herbicides used in Vietnam to inform the Secretary of Veterans Affairs about the strength of the scientific evidence showing association between exposure to Agent Orange/dioxin and certain conditions.

Through this process, the list of 'presumptive' conditions has grown since 1991, and currently the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has listed prostate cancer, respiratory cancers, multiple myeloma, type II diabetes, Hodgkin's disease, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, soft tissue sarcoma, chloracne, porphyria cutanea tarda, peripheral neuropathy, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and spina bifida in children of veterans exposed to Agent Orange as conditions associated with exposure to the herbicide.
A son took his business degree from UCA and joined Walmart as a manager in training. After two years he was working as an assistant manager in Oklahoma, working extra hours off the clock, and his wife and infant son qualified for WIC. Whatever you may hear about Walmart's labor relations, it is probably much worse.

I read an item in Military Officer in which a wounded warrior talked about competing with his baby in learning to walk with his new legs. He said the hardest part of recovery was finding a job. Any job for starters is better than none and staying home looking all the while feeling hopeless. Shame on every state agency/commission, county, city and large employer that does not give a veterans preference with emphasis on hiring wounded warriors. As for VA health care, it can be good and can be bad. Here in Arkansas it seems to be good once a Veteran gets into the system with the biggest problem being the red tape. Give me a veteran anytime, preferably a retired military veteran, to fill a job vacancy. Good for Wal-Mart!

I saw Max's report and just watched the CBS report and note that neither says the jobs are "full-time" nor indicate that the level of pay would be enough to support a family. While $10 sounds like a lot to a kid working at Mickey D's, that's only $20K a year if teh jobs are full time and WM has a history of keeping the hours below the level to require benefits. And, they need to be sure that their store managers have bought into the plan as there seems to be a disconnect between the stated managment positions and actuality bassed on their defense on all of the labor law violations they have been charged with.
